There’s something about food in Nigeria that goes beyond hunger. It carries memories, comfort, and joy. And anytime the argument comes up, buka food or restaurant food, emotions always enter the matter.

Let’s analyze it in a simple way;

Buka Food: The Taste That Feels Like Home

If you’ve ever eaten at a proper Nigerian buka, you know it’s not just food. It’s a feeling.

The smoke from the firewood, the loud conversations, the aunties shouting “customer!!!, your food don ready!” it brings life to the food.

And the taste?

My dear, buka food has a way of touching your soul. The kind of taste that feels like someone’s mother cooked it with love and small stress.

A plate of amala with gbegiri and ewedu from a good buka can calm your spirit. Rice with stew that tastes like Lagos traffic and childhood memories at the same time. Or that soft swallow with soup that reminds you of visiting your grandma during holidays.

Even the way they serve it, fast, hot, and without too much packaging, makes everything sweet.

Restaurant Food: Comfort, Class, and Clean Table

Restaurant food has its own beauty.

The calm environment, the AC, the gentle music playing in the background, and the nicely plated food that makes you feel like you’re treating yourself.

Sometimes, you just want peace.

You want to sit down, relax, and enjoy your meal without someone shouting “add 50 naira meat for me!”

Restaurants also give you order and packaging. Your food comes clean, fresh, and arranged well. You can even take pictures if you feel like. And you feel important, almost like you’re giving yourself a soft life moment.

The Honest truth is:

Taste and comfort are different things.

If we are talking taste, many people will still point at buka. There’s a depth, a sharpness, a richness that’s hard to explain. It hits different.

If we are talking peace and nice environment, restaurants win easily.

And honestly, life is about balance.

Some days, your soul needs buka food.

Other days, your mind needs the calm of a restaurant.

Which Do You Prefer?

At the end of the day, the choice depends on your mood. Both have their own special charm.

For me, buka food carries the heart of Nigeria.

Restaurant food carries the comfort.

But both?

Beautiful in their own ways.

Both of dem are restaurants.
Just that many numerous ways can be involve in rendering your service.
Big eateries, Canteen, vehicle/cart-pushers, buka/makeshift-shops, ordering/waybill.

If you value your health, just avoid food prepared by road side sellers. Majority of them practice poor hygiene, and the food they sell is not fit for human consumption.

I once accompanied a colleague to a mama put restaurant and cringed when she used her hands to dish out spaghetti for customers. My health comes first, so eating at bukas is a no..no..
