I’ve noticed something for a long time — anytime something major happens in Nigeria (accidents, politics, court rulings, security issues, fuel price updates, etc), the information is always scattered across multiple places.

Twitter has the speed, but the noise is too much.
Most news sites are either slow or loaded with ads.
And sometimes you hear important updates from WhatsApp before any official platform carries it.

It made me wonder whether we actually have a proper real-time news platform built mainly for Nigerians.

Out of curiosity, I decided to work on a small project over the past few years — something that tries to combine verified breaking news + community conversations in one place. It’s still an early MVP, nothing fancy, but it loads fast and focuses mainly on quick updates.

I’m sharing this because I genuinely want feedback from people here:
– What do you think a real-time news platform in Nigeria should look like?
– What features matter the most?
– What do you feel existing platforms are not doing well?
– Would you use a site that mixes breaking news + user posts (like Nairaland but faster)?

If you want to be breaking news on Nigeria social media, you will run into trouble. Even the credible sources do take their their to verify news before breaking it

Obiano, former Anambra state governor was rumored to have died in London hospital less than a week, all the media that broke the news will definitely loose mature readers

Judge Omotosho was claimed to have escaped gun attack with photos attached, it was all fake as nothing as such. How would you look if you initially posted that on your page?

you’re right tho, and that’s actually one of the issues I’m trying to avoid. The goal isn’t to rush and publish unverified stories just to be “first.”

If anything, I want the platform to focus on verified updates only esp the AI mode, even if it means being a bit slower sometimes. Nigeria has seen too many cases where fake breaking news spreads and causes panic — like the Obiano situation you mentioned.

My idea is more like:
– verified sources only
– clearly stated updates
– no sensational headlines
– and a space where users can discuss without the usual chaos

I’d rather have fewer updates that are accurate than be competing with people dropping every rumour.

On the judge issue, that’s actually a good example. Stories like that usually start from random Facebook pages and won’t get picked up on my end because I’m not pulling from those sources at all. Anything that isn’t confirmed by reliable outlets just won’t appear — that’s the plan.

A page of 400k followers first posted a short video, a page of 30k followers reposted it. 400k followers got less than 300 comments, less than 200 shares with 300k views within days

Meanwhile the page of 30k followers got 1 million views within days, 1k+ share, 1k+ comments.

The difference is simple, the 30k followers is more trusted than the 400k followers due to the past activities like verifying news, avoiding gossiping news that will attract in genuine followers

Because 90% the time you try to create a post, the site starts behaving like it’s running on a generator with low fuel:

“Server overwhelmed.”
“Try again later.”

Bro, even my grandma’s WhatsApp status loads faster than Nairaland’s posting page.

It’s wild that in 2025, a platform this big still chokes just because two people try to submit a thread at the same time.

Nairaland is still acting like it’s allergic to modern servers. grin
