One of my biggest problems in watermelon farming was rodents.

Once the fruits start forming, they pierce, eat, and damage the young fruits. Even fruit flies were easier to control than these rodents, especially squirrels.

You will see big heads of Watermelon coming to farm the next day to see they have been damaged by rodents.

Tried scarecrows worked at first, but they do return after a few days.

Fenced the whole farm with palm fronds and traps, even used black nylon to fence it at some point, but how they still enter the farm was a mystery.

Now used dry grasses to cover the fruits was more effective.

To prevent this:

- Make sure the area where you are setting up the farm is not rodent infested.

- Fence the farm well with local palm fronds and traps.

- Use scarecrows and change their location after few days.

One of the major challenges in watermelon farming is rodents. Treat your soil well with nematicides any other issues can be easily controlled.

How about getting couple of cats and make them live in or around the farm? They should help I think

You are quite right. I was wondering why the o.p is not thinking along those lines. A big squirrel is worth at least 8k but will probably be sold for 10k.

All form of farming has it's own challenges. You shall scale through.

Set traps, it will work fine.

My Dad did the same thing and he caught many rodents that were destroying his farm.

Spread poison like pushout or commando lightly on the ones they are eating. They will be dieing one by one

Once released, the air quality becomes compromised. You also know that these chemical firms have all sorts of class action lawsuits because of people using their products ignorantly?
There are environmentally friendly ways of dealing with pests. Some are stated in the post.

My watermelon was eaten by termite before they even started growing and also, as a result of the excessive rain fall my crops were destroyed.

Call them to a meeting and reach an agreement on the number of units of watermelon they want per acre. Agree on what will not take away too much of your profits. At the end, you are happy, the rodents are happy too.

Try this instead.... Get a big water container and place them in strategic places on the farm and add very hot chilli pepper powder. Fill the container with water and ensure the effect of the pepper 🌶️ can still be felt.

Put those containers in strategic places on the farm and come around every now and then to check.... You'll see the squirrels 🐿️ rolling on the floor after they've rubbed the pepper water on their eyes.

Pele o. Take heart. Agriculture is not for the faint hearted man or woman. So many threats to the survival of the crop you have cultivated. Even when you are about to reap the fruit of your labour, thieves might show up. Pele o.
