First Lady Oluremi Tinubu Supports 250 PWDs in Ekiti with N200,000 each
…Launches Renewed Hope Initiative for PWDs

The First Lady of Nigeria and National Chairman of Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), Senator Oluremi Tinubu on Wednesday empowered 250 Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) in Ekiti State with N50,000,000 grant to boost their economic independence and improve their livelihoods.

Each of the PWDs was presented N200,000 cash at the event which held at the Lady Jibowu Hall, Government House, Ado-Ekiti.

Speaking at the event, Senator Oluremi Tinubu who was represented by the Wife of Ekiti State Governor and RHI State Coordinator, Dr Olayemi Oyebanji, highlighted the importance of inclusion and equal opportunity, stressing that the initiative was part of a broader national vision to ensure that no one is left behind in the social and economic development of the country.

Senator Oluremi, who also launched the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) Economic Empowerment for PWDs to commemorate the International Day of PWDs, said the Economic Empowerment Programme which held simultaneously across the 36 states, would provide business recapitalization grants of N200,000 to 250 PWDs in each State and the Federal Capital Territory to help strengthen their existing businesses, enhance their livelihoods and achieve greater self-reliance.

While maintaining that the programme aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which seeks inclusive growth and shared prosperity, the Wife of the President explained that over the past two years, the initiative has supported more than 100,000 women petty traders and small business owners, support agriculture, education, health as well as provide emergency relief to vulnerable communities, victims of disasters and internally displaced persons across the country.

Expressing her profound gratitude to Ekiti State Governor, Mr Biodun Oyebanji and His Wife, Dr Olayemi Oyebanji for their support and for complimenting the efforts of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at ensuring that no one is left behind in the development agenda of the country, the First Lady also assured that the empowerment programe would now be an annual event for the PWDs to mark their day.

“Our nation grows stronger when every individual is empowered to contribute meaningfully. As Helen Keller, the renowned American disability rights advocate, once said, “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.” These words remind us that a truly inclusive society is built when we stand together, creating opportunities that empower everyone to contribute their unique gifts to our collective progress.

“Today, the Renewed Hope Initiative will provide the sum of two hundred thousand naira (N200,000) Business Recapitalization Grants to two hundred and fifty (250) Persons with Disabilities in each State and the Federal Capital Territory to support small business owners to recapitalize their existing businesses and strengthen their means of livelihood.

“This programme aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda of His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, which seeks to promote inclusive growth and shared prosperity by ensuring that no Nigerian is left behind, especially those whose needs are often overlooked and It is worth noting that, over the past two years, the Renewed Hope Initiative has supported over one hundred thousand (100,000) women petty traders and small business owners, including persons with disabilities, with direct financial grants to grow their businesses”. She asserted.

The event was attended by the Deputy Governor, Chief (Mrs) Monisade Afuye, Secretary to Ekiti State Government, Prof. Habibat Adubiaro, Head of Service, Dr (Mrs) Folakemi Olomojobi, Commissioner for Education, Dr (Mrs) Bimpe Aderiye, Special Adviser, Special Education and Social Inclusion, Princess Adetoun Agboola, among others top government functionaries.

Great initiative. Empowering PWDs with real capital is a step in the right direction impact, not just promises. If this becomes consistent and properly monitored, many small businesses will genuinely grow. More of this, less politics.

The aim should be something more sustainable. Like a long term plan for these people. 200k cannot do much after a month.

Is this what makes Britain, Canada, America attractive for our japa prayers and fasting, instead of having well paid civil servants provide government services and public utilities for everyone, so that private companies can flourish?

I guess if this Stalinist Stockholm Syndrome affliction has kept 20 million Lagosians in Tinubu bondage, why change the formula for 200 million Nigerians huh

The eyesore on Bourdillon Road
2nd January 2025

Beyond his neighbours, there is something about the sight of people hanging around a president’s residence that does not speak well of his leadership capabilities. Maybe no one has nudged him to see it, but the impression that spectacle on Bourdillon Road generates is that Tinubu enjoys the sight of suffering humans and thrives in—and through— their poverty.

If all these years, impoverished people hang around you and you remain comfortable enough to keep them just so they can be handed tokens of your large heart, then it means you have a pro-poverty mindset. Such a frame of mind is oriented toward cultivating poverty rather than stimulating abundance.

That is why he could unproblematically relate the story of his “friend” who went from using five Rolls Royce to a far-less valued car and not consider the import of the nonsense he was saying. That spurious account was an indication that this is a man for whom poverty—of others, not himself—is an ideal.

How will someone with disabilities start a successful biz. The money is good but it isn't enough. They're disabled, gather the money and set up something sustainable that can sustain them till their full life. It's done in sane climes like Scotland, USA, Canada etc.

200k is not what they need!!!

Who will manage the money on their behave? You forget that nah Nigeria we dey. If she hands over that money to others to manage be certain that it will be looted. It's better she gave them individually. Some will spend it well. Some even if she gave 10m they will still squander it.

I cannot support this initiative because distributing 200,000 naira a mere $150 is not empowerment but a token gesture that fails to address systemic economic challenges, this amount cannot even cover three bags of rice, let alone sustain families with extended dependents, and it offers only a temporary fix rather than the permanent solutions expected from such a high level meeting. Instead of short term handouts, I am disappointed that the First Lady did not leverage her influence to create lasting opportunities, such as introducing sustainable job programs or direct export linkages, which would have enabled genuine economic independence and meaningful progress for Persons with Disabilities.

200k each to people with disabilities moderately better as majority of them don't have dependents and majorly into petty trades.

Have you ever thought of the fact that there are limits to what people living with disabilities can do?

Majority of them are petty artesians or traders, with little or absolutely no dependants. 200k is small in this economy but will definitely add little value to what they are currently engage in. If this is doing consistently by government at various level, I think we will have fewer disabilities persons begging for arms on the road side.

Just because someone has a disability does not mean they have a limit to what they can achieve if you believe being fully able means manually lifting five bags of water, remember that with the right training and opportunity, they can learn to operate a forklift and lift twenty times that weight true empowerment is not defining people by their perceived constraints, but by investing in their capacity to excel beyond imagination.
