Nigeria Police Warn Officers Against Escorting VIPs In Mufti by Bobloco(op): 10:36pm On Dec 03, 2025
......Threaten Disciplinary Action

According to the message, the Police High Command expressed concern that despite repeated instructions, some officers continue to follow VIPs in mufti, contravening the operational guidelines of the Special Protection Unit (SPU).

The Nigeria Police Force has issued a fresh directive warning officers and men against escorting Very Important Persons (VIPs) while dressed in mufti, describing the act as a violation of standing orders.

The warning was contained in a wireless message dispatched from the Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Protection, Force Headquarters, Abuja (AIG PROTECT FHQ), to all Police Protection Units across the country.

The signal, referenced CB: 4001/DOPS/SPU/FHQ/ABJ/VOL.20, reiterated an earlier order from the Inspector General of Police, directing the withdrawal of personnel from unauthorised VIP escorts and banning officers from performing such duties in plain clothes.

According to the message, the Police High Command expressed concern that despite repeated instructions, some officers continue to follow VIPs in mufti, contravening the operational guidelines of the Special Protection Unit (SPU).

“It has been observed that men still follow VIPs in mufti in disregard to this order. Officers and men are to desist henceforth as anybody caught will be dealt with accordingly,” the directive stated.

The signal was copied to key police formations nationwide, including commands in Kano, Lagos, Yola, Makurdi, Benin, Port Harcourt, Abuja, Sokoto, Bauchi, Abeokuta, Akure, Awka, Enugu, Ibadan, Minna, Calabar, Asaba, Ebonyi, Akwa Ibom, Owerri, and Kaduna, among others.

Units were instructed to acknowledge receipt and treat the order as urgent and important.

SaharaReporters reported on November 23, that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had directed that police officers assigned to provide security for VIPs across the country be withdrawn from such duties and redeployed to focus on their core policing responsibilities.

The presidential directive was issued during a security meeting on Sunday in Abuja, which brought together top officials, including the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Waidi Shaibu; the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke; the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun; and the Director-General of the Department of State Services, Tosin Adeola Ajayi.

Under the new arrangement, VIPs seeking protection will now be required to request well-armed personnel from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

On Wednesday, SaharaReporters reported that following President Tinubu's order, the Nigerian police authorities had begun some internal adjustments.

A memo, signed by the Commanding Officer of SPU Base 16 in Lagos, Neji Veronica, instructed all officers to return to base before the close of business on November 24.

It stated, “Sequel to the directive of Mr President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces on the withdrawal of police personnel attached to VIPs, the Commanding Officer directs, with immediate effect, the withdrawal of all personnel of SPU Base 16 attached to VIPs/Beats across the federation back to base."

Reinforcing the urgency, the memo added, "You are all warned to report back before the end of today, Monday, 24/11/2025, and all to attend the lecture parade tomorrow. Attendance shall be taken from the nominal roll. This is for your information and strict compliance

This is the only time those guys can display power on harmless Nigerians. They like to oppress road users on the highway, while carrying bag for madam and running errands while a few naira notes are thrown at them.

However,What I am surprised at is that is it that the Nigerian police have no control over what their men do. They have been withdraw from a posting but still continue to flaunt it with absolutely no repercussion

Some policemen will still disregard this directive.

Imagine GCFR gave a directive and they are still escorting VIPs in mufti

Why is the police disgracing themselves? Does it mean they don't have a record of the personalities their officers are serving and withdraw them? What kind of a disgraced country is this?

State commissioners of police only control the police in their state under their jurisdiction while tactical units like special protection unit, anti terrorism squad, anti cultism squad etc are controlled from Force headquarters abuja which can have annex buildings in other states.

Dpo is just a division police officer under an area command controlled by the state commissioner of police.

Do you know some states like Lagos state have up ten commissioners of police? Eg airport commissioner of police, sea port commissioner of police, railway commissioner of police, commissioner of police training school etc .
But there is only one state commissioner of police.

So to answer your question, only force headquarters have Jurisdiction under the office of Department of operations headed by a Deputy Inspector general of police operations and sub headed by Assistant Inspector general of Special protection unit can effectively monitor and effect control to all other SPU commanders and formations across Nigeria.

The DPOs of police station are the main culprit here.
These Vips have their way as long as money is exchanged in envelopes, they would issue orders to a few of their subordinates to escort despite the directives from FG

That is to show you that these people at the helm of affair are the most clueless people ever. If a child comes late to school, how should I correct? By getting through to the parents. This is the sole reason Helinues loves them.

Re: Nigeria Police Warn Officers Against Escorting VIPs In Mufti by smallsmall: 8:12am On Dec 04, 2025
This is extreme lawlessness and disrespect!
How can a President and C-in-C issue an order: No More Police Escort for VIPs.
Then the IGP countermands that Order: There will be "AUTHOURISED' Police Escort for VIPs!

Who is authorizing Who?

These so-called VIPs spoil the Country for everybody, they sponsor Bandits, Political Thugs and then use the Police and NSCDC that are paid with our Tax, to guard themselves while we are all left to face the consequence of their Criminality? angry angry

Since IGP cannot control what his DPO's are doing (those ones are just "selling" our Police to anyone who can put down Money) and the President too cannot control his IGP, maybe we should just scrap the Police. grin grin

The same police that were asked to withdraw and probably has or a new set of police?

I thought directive was issued for police to withdraw and civil defense replace them.
Re: Nigeria Police Warn Officers Against Escorting VIPs In Mufti by Originalsly: 9:12am On Dec 04, 2025
This just shows how the Police Force is I disciplined... and why it is I disciplined. In any Police or Military force ... instructions are to be followed without question or there will be consequences ... not warnings or threats. Here... an instruction is given... Police must immediately stop escorting VIP's period. If they do in mufti or uniform ... does it matter? ....the order is not followed period. What is supposed to happen?... isn't it those who did not follow should be disciplined? Instead the softee sends out a warning. Why would they even listen to his warnings? And we wonder why Police feel free to do as they like .... no consequences.

If personnel have been withdrawn from vips

And some still police go against that order of withdrawal to still move with and protect vips, albeit in mufti, where do they get the gun for such illegal duty?
