Court declares "the arrest of traditional worshipper, Mr. Effiong in Akwa Ibom is unlawful," ordered immediate and unconditional release of Effiong, person behind the mask, and also ordered the State government to pay Mr. Effiong for damages, violation of his human rights and freedom of worship

Remember Ekpo is part of traditional religion.

What was the masquerade arrested in the first place? Police should go after criminals and not masquerades.

Masquerades are typically criminals. They use the cover of the mask to commit crimes. Most common are stealing, harassment, armed robbery. A friend has been robbed of his phone and all the money in his pockets. The masquerade actually checked his pockets to ensure he has emptied them. This was done with a machete as weapon. Several years ago, while on a bike one had threatened to cut my leg with a machete if I didn't drop something for them. I dropped N200 for them to be able to continue my journey. I support their ban. They are nuisance to society. I have lots I can share about their atrocities but these ones should do for now

Their appearance on the streets should be regulated and confined to only when there's a cultural festival.

These sects don't wield dangerous weapons with which they assault the public do they?
But an Eyo masquerade wields dangerous weapons with which they maim and unalive both foes and innocent folks during their processions.

There's a yearly masquerade festival in my home town. It used to be a period of cultural celebration and joy in the yesteryears.
But as from 15yrs ago till date, the festival have become a ground where wild boys come to settle cult scores.
They come to the area high and brandishing all kinds of dangerous weapons.
Participants have lost their lives, onlookers have lost their lives, a lot more have been maimed.

The government couldn't ban the event all together because of backlash from the people.

So what happens is on every celebration day, armoured tanks are set up in strategic locations at the arena. Do any how and soldiers and mopol will deal with that person.

Still, there are pockets of violence here and there because these wild boys just refused to grow some sense.

After the event and participants are retreating to their localities, a rival group would ambush and waylay the other. Next year, there will be reprisals.

Years ago, I have personally had to write to the LGA chairman calling attention to what our sweet festival had become without any action taken then.
Not until the state government waded in years after to offer some protection.
