If Police ask you this One Question and you answer Wrong, your freedom is Gone. Let me give you one of the most important legal lessons you will learn this year. Anytime you are at a police station whether as complainant, witness, suspect, neighbour, friend, or innocent passerby there is ONE question Police often ask that can change your life: “Oga/Madam, what happened? Tell us your own side.” It sounds harmless. It sounds friendly. It sounds like conversation. But it is not conversation. It is statement-taking and your answer can either free you or put you inside trouble that was not originally your own. This Question is dangerous because the moment you start talking freely: “I only slapped him once…” “I pushed her but she fell…” “I collected the money but I was going to pay…” “Yes we fought, but it was small fight…” You’ve just admitted to assault, battery, threat, fraud, or malicious damage without knowing. In law, your mouth can become evidence and once it is written as your statement, you cannot come tomorrow and say “I was joking” “I didn’t mean it that way” “I was confused.” Police will tell you: “But you said it yourself.” Police officers are trained to listen quietly. They let you talk. They let you “explain.” They let you release unnecessary information. Then they put it in writing. Next thing you hear is: “Sign here.” And once you sign, your own words can land you in: ✔ Police cell ✔ Court ✔ Bail conditions ✔ Criminal record ✔ Trouble you never planned for Your statement is as powerful as evidence in court. So what do you do when they ask? Very simple: You say politely: “I will give my statement in the presence of my lawyer.” This one sentence can save your freedom. You are not being rude. You are exercising your legal right. Nigeria Constitution says you have the right to counsel. Police cannot force you to speak without guidance. Remember this, your silence cannot jail you. Your wrong statement can. Talking too much is how innocent people enter criminal matters. Police station is not where you display grammar or emotions. Be calm. Be wise. Be guided. One wrong sentence can cost you your freedom.

I no con get lawyer o , but for learning sake don't you think Nigeria police formation should at least have a police assigned to duties like this instead of the normal general police met at the counter and also Nigerians should at least have a quick access to a lawyer instead of them first offering themself as a service to us. And if not what are the process involved in getting a lawyer and how we can discuss their service payment per case at hand |

This is solid advice. Just keep it simple when you get to the station: "I need a lawyer." You will be fine. |

Very true. In fact most of the normal daily words have different meaning in law. Even if you don’t have a lawyer, Government can provide you with one. |
