"They are using internet service providers in neighboring countries and not the ones in Nigeria" - presidential aide, Daniel Bwala, speaks on why security agents can't track terrorists who use social media

Nigerian terrorists showing off ransom on TikTok, Facebook, using Elon Musk’s Starlink, FG unable to trace them: Presidency

President Bola Tinubu’s government has said that security agencies are unable to track down terrorists branding weapons and loads of ransom collected in cash on social media because they use Elon Musk’s Starlink and other internet services from neighbouring countries.

Daniel Bwala, one of the spokespersons for Mr Tinubu, disclosed this in an interview with a radio station, Nigeria Info, on Thursday, when asked why Nigerian security agencies were swift to track down, arrest and detain government critics but have failed to do the same with terrorists boasting and flaunting ransom on social media.

“Let me give you one scenario: There is a regulatory body in Nigeria that has a database of Nigerian people. There is also a body that deals with internet service provision, where if you are using an internet service that is covered within the sphere of Nigeria, we can trace wherever you are through your IP address.

If you are using Starlink, we cannot trace it because Starlink is not registered in Nigeria. It’s in the space.”

See watery excuse from the so called spokesperson of the government. You cannot track and arrest criminals, but very gallant and swift in arresting critics and innocent people.

Elon Musk should take a second look at Nigeria. This is getting ridiculous.

The terrorists simply have sponsors in the government.

This is a serious issue. The terrorists using Starlink and other unregulated platforms is a major challenge for security forces. We need to find a way to address this so that they can be tracked and apprehended.

The government should also explore ways to engage with these platforms to enhance our security efforts.

Yahoo boys will blackmail someone in the US, the person will commit suicide but here in Nigeria they will be showing off their wealth

A kidnapper showing off his ransom on the Internet is no different from a yahoo boy flaunting wealth online.

They can all be tracked anywhere in this world.

FG should work with Elon Musk to get Starlink registered in Nigeria as soon as possible. This will enable the FG to trace criminal users of the service.

Meanwhile, our security agencies are doing a great job. Let's continue to support them.
May God bless Nigeria for ever!

Terrorism is the best way to launder money by the government, if the government wasn’t involved, they would’ve captured the bandits and terrorist since 20years ago

This explanation reeks of gross incompetence on the part of the government.

Starlink not being registered in Nigeria doesn’t magically make users invisible. Starlink still uses terminals on the ground, still connects through hardware, and still leaves digital footprints. Other countries trace Starlink assisted criminals, so why is Nigeria suddenly helpless?

Even if terrorists are routing internet through neighbouring countries, intelligence gathering is not limited to IP tracing. There’s signal tracking, satellite surveillance, financial monitoring, human intelligence, multiple layers. So blaming Starlink alone looks like another excuse to cover their failure.

Meanwhile, critics get tracked within minutes, but terrorists filming themselves with millions in ransom are apparently ghosts.

This country is a joke.

That's a fallacious assessment.
Employ diplomatic pressure on the countrie and have those service providers to cooperate and coordinate with security forces...
Sheesh it's not rocket science

Big lie, as long as you use MTN, Glo and other Nigeria networks, you can be tracked by those network. They have access to your location. The moment your phone connects to a network in Nigeria, the Nigerian network knows your exact location. As a matter of fact, they know the exact cell tower you're connected to.
