Chairman of Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, has issued a sharp challenge to Nigeria’s elite, urging them to divert funds currently spent on luxury items like Rolls-Royce cars and private jets into establishing industries that stimulate economic growth and create job opportunities.

Speaking to correspondents after a meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the Aso Rock Villa on Friday, Dangote lamented the culture of extravagant consumption, stating that the nation’s development hinges on the responsibility of local investors.

“If you look at the Nigerian policy before, during the military, everybody from the president downwards, everybody, they were all using Peugeot 504. That was the highest. So when a president is using 504, you cannot come as a commoner, as a businessman or whoever you are, to be using Rolls-Royce,” he said.

He condemned the ease with which private jets fill Nigerian airports, arguing that such wealth should be channelled into production, saying, “You know, if you have money for Rolls-Royce, you should go and put up an industry in your locality or anywhere, part of Nigeria, wherever you feel there is a need.

“And that’s why, really, sometimes it pains me when I go to the local airport, whether it’s here or Lagos, you see that even finding a parking space for your plane is impossible. Everybody has a private jet. Those private jets will be in industries so that we can create jobs.”

The businessman emphasised that national development requires focus on manufacturing and agriculture, supported by strong bankers.

He highlighted the massive task of job creation, noting that Nigeria’s population grows by 8.7 million babies every year, necessitating huge infrastructure and power delivery efforts.

“Some people, maybe they don’t know the position of the country as we speak, because population growth is 8.7 million babies every year. So 8.7 million babies every year will have to be in a lot of things. We have to deliver power. We have to deliver infrastructure.”

Dangote also framed tax compliance not just as a legal requirement, but as a civic duty and a partnership with the government.

“When you have a company, the number one shareholder is the government, so what we are looking for is that the government should facilitate, they should give us an enabling environment to do this.

“We too, as corporate citizens, must make sure that we pay our taxes. We must behave. It’s a partnership. I cannot be cheating my partner. So when the government now give us the environment of making money, we should also be conscious about doing our own civic duties. That is to pay tax.

“I pay tax, your children will be able to go to school. Your children will be able to go to the hospital. We don’t need to go to Cairo, London, or the U.S. for medicals. We do it here, but, you know, the demands of government is huge. So if the demand of the government is huge, we must do our own bit.”

Dangote also dismissed the over-reliance on foreign investors, stressing that no external investor would commit to Nigeria without strong local participation.

“We should stop calling for foreign investors. There’s no foreign investor who will come here.

“The invitation of a foreign investor is for a domestic investor. What attracts a domestic investor is good policies, good governance, and the rule of law. Once you have this, domestic investors will also be encouraged by the government to come and invest,” he said.

He maintained that once Nigerians invest, foreigners will follow, either to partner or to set up their own operations.

“We must industrialise our country. Nobody will do it but us. So when we industrialise, a foreigner will now come either to partner with us or partner with any Nigerian.

“But we want to remove this perceived risk, the real risk, and also the perceived one. You know, because when you see somebody invest in them, fine. I mean, it’s like what I said to a lot of people. Have you ever seen somebody advertising for a restaurant? Nobody advertises a restaurant at all. Okay, but you go and eat. The food is good. You tell somebody. That person, too, will go and try. So that’s how we want to make our country.”

PUNCH reports that Dangote also stated that the Dangote refinery will soon produce surplus volumes, adding that by February, it will supply 15–20 million litres more than Nigeria needs, which allows exports to neighbouring countries, reducing the incidence of fuel scarcity across West Africa.

He maintained that the industry will thrive, saying, “What we are trying to do is to make Nigeria the refining hub of Africa because African countries, all of them, are importing products and we want to make sure that whatever we consume is produced in our own land.”

Earlier in October, Dangote had also urged Nigerians to embrace homegrown products as a way of strengthening the nation’s economy and creating jobs.

Hahaha, one of the major things I avoided in this year is cutting off the liabilities and also stop proving anything to anybody

As long as I am sure about myself, I have nothing to prove to you

Succinctly stated by Aliko. That's pure universal principle. With 8.7 million babies being born annually as stated by Aliko in that video, that's an average of 87 million Nigerian children born within 10 years.

Luxury items such as the "sexy" Rolls, Bentleys, and private jets can come later when all is set and done. Sustainable real sector industrialization in every region in all emerging markets is key. Period.

Keep your advise to yourself. All this self centered african billionaires. Greedy and ego centric. How many nigerians can afford private jet?

Many are living below poverty line and he should advice thr government to fix the economy and put the infrastructures in place

Very funny man. You can’t control how people spend their money. The government gave you millions of USD in grants and killed millions of startups because of you.

This advise will fall not only on deaf ears, but there will be some who will come and throw shades of insults at him.
Nigerians like soft life without handwork., we know how to manufacture excuses and not solutions to anything Always looking for a savior to do all the handwork and then do handout.

I have tremendous respect for those who attempt to run industries and extra respect for those who successfully run them.

If you notice, most people default to running bars as a way of making money and even when politicians steal, they still have no ideas of what business to run so they default to building malls or hotels, businesses that will not be able to sustain their present lifestyle

Someone who works for money understands that you can't waste money. Dangote is looking at these politicians trying to compete with billionaires when their primary job is to serve the people. They are nothing but thieves.

That's why when you go on social media and see those who spend money and show off most times, they don't have. It doesn't mean that the one they are showing off isn't theirs (they stole it) but if e didn't de e didn't de. They keep on splashing money because that is the way to validate their identity, they are poor inside. That's why they need show off.

Money not worked for can never be spent well. It's not a curse

Very informative and interesting speech from Aliko cool

But then, Dangote ought to be giving back to Nigeria through several programs like;

Statewide scholarship
Academic grants
Entrepreneurship loan to young Nigerians aspiring to start their own business

Skill acquisition programs in all the 36 states not just in Kano state.

Nigeria favoured him so much and made him who he is today, he should be giving back a lot more than just paying tax and donating rice during Sallah angry

Nigerians are used to free government money. When Peter Obi said said turning night vigil to night shift, many didn't understand. We need factories in this country

I think we should first take this message to the grassroots before taking it to the elites.

Young people from poor backgrounds who are fortunate to make some good money should be thinking about investment instead of expending the money on flashy cars, booze and women.

Heavy taxes on buisness is still there. Why should I give govt 30 percent of my hard earned money from busiess?
U are asking people to invest. I want to invest in agriculture with money from remote work but the fear of fulani wont let me. I know how many young guys who made some cash from remote would have love to invest in some agric based business but the policy is wacky, anyone can destroy ur farmland and nothing can be done.
U have wacky electricity and pathetic water system, extreme security and bloody road system and u want industriliaztion and u still want to take 30 percent of the few company's profit. We dey play for Nigeria. 50 years from now, Nigeria will still be a mess and even worse.

Thank God he said it in the presidential palace after meeting Tinubu because this is what Peter Obi have been advocating - cut down on excessive, reckless, luxurious and unnecessary spending by government.

Let everyone, starting with Tinubu, use locally made or assembled cars, then the citizens will follow.

Oya, data boys food is ready, come and defend. Also, abuse PO join o.

I'm very keen on security..

Those retired generals and AIGs should invest the money they have made into security.. by setting up private security outfits.. I know many that don't know what to do with their money after retirement.. most pour them into buying houses (real estates) which adds little value to others in return. But an investment in Security would create alot of jobs and they would make money in return..

That’s the spirit!

But majority have the mentality of show off first, buy expensive car and build residential house for themselves. Why many never get it right through that route.

You're just making up silly excuses because you can't wean yourself of easy and dodgy money for quick self gratification.

The food you're paying for and eating must have been cultivated in Pluto and harvested by ghosts since every farmer in Nigeria has been murdered according to your warped mentality.

You can run but can't hide from the tax man and what you leverage on as technology today will be replaced someday so don't wonder when you are stranded in later years because you spent your young age picking low hanging fruits and enjoying the vanity from unrestrained immediate self gratification.
