I feel this is a thing. I’ve come across a few who refuse to learn new skills unless they come from fellow illiterates. |

Honestly, I don't see why anyone would be envious of the average graduate right now. We are talking about maybe over 300,000 people with certificates and no jobs—what exactly is the flex there? The real pity they feel is seeing how wasted all that effort feels. Imagine someone spending four or five years in school only to end up hustling on the street, maybe riding Keke Napep or Okada, or jumping at any small cleaning job they can find just to survive. That kind of frustration hits different, especially when they look around and see people who didn't even finish secondary school thriving just because they got skills or started trading early. If the non-graduates were just hating, they wouldn't be busy training their own kids up to PhD level, would they? They know the value of education, but they also know the hustle is what pays the bills right now. The bottom line is, in Nigeria today, that paper alone is not the deal anymore. You need more than just a degree to chase your dreams. Few people might be envious but the public in general sees it more like wasted efforts and believed it the energy was channeled into something else, it would have produced a different outcome. |

meobizy:In Nigeria, graduate's are the one envy uneducated people. I over hear many times people says that Nigeria is where illiterates smiles in millions while graduates receive peanut at month end. In marriage, I hear people saying that illiterates maintain and live in peaceful marriage while graduates always in divorces issues. But people we discribe as illiterates in Nigeria are values as educated people in others countries including in Europe and America. So far you have a skill and complete basic education with your Olevel certificate holder you're educated any where in the world. But in Nigeria a GCE, WAEC, NECO, UTME, SSCE certificate holders are still address as illiterates by some that have opportunity to attend university, is this not insult to education. Even UNICEF recognize WAEC certificate holder as educated, but Nigeria society still neglect their fellow educated citizens because of university. Remember that this person you neglected just need four years to be like you, he doesn't need JAMB examination result to enter university depending country he resid, JAMB is for Nigeria education system. In Europe and America minimum wage is the same be it Olevel certificate holder or degree certificate holder so far both of you work at the same level at work field. Anyone can advance in education any depends the resources in his hand and targets. If there's opportunity to make money, make the money and go back to school and get degree, and if there's opportunity to get degree get it and push your money making vision later, education is key to solutions and situations that's my advice. It takes visionless people be it degrees holder or non degree holder to envy anyone. |

SpencerForbes:Yes!! Illiterates or non graduates will always be envious at the social coherence and logical perception of graduates. Going to the university makes you become an "Office"if only you learnt how to think logically. Not every graduate is qualified, most just attended but learnt nothing beyond passing exams. Any graduate who can't find something doing learnt nothing and is lazy. university is never a waste as it broadens the mindset to think outside the box. But sadly, most graduates are not certified and all illiterates will remain unfulfilled. |

I think it is the other way round. Most broke graduates always envy the rich folks who didn't went to the university. And point of correction not being a graduate doesn't translates to being an illiterate. Illiteracy has nothing to do with being a graduate or not, illiteracy != Non graduate. |

Even Cosmas Maduka envied the educated people and went to get an education later. There's no need to argue. Life will humble you. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HqWp3RmDO-Y People often attempt to think going to school is the only education. No. There is formal education and informal education. The boy on the street will learn the hard way informally but the boy in school will have to learn the hard way about life because life itself is a teacher. Experience is necessary to get after theory. The street boy gets experience before education. The school boy gets educated before experience. The balance of both is necessary in life.

First, what's your definition of an ilLiterate ? Thereafter we can take it from there |
| Re: Do Illiterates Envy School Graduates? by Belurved1(m): 8:12am On Dec 10, 2025 |
Certainly. It’s possible for an illiterate to envy a graduate, even when he is more financially successful, just as graduates may also envy non-graduates. These dynamics go both ways. |

Well most times nah who no get money go envy who get. Just as graduate go envy a rich non graduate and a non graduate envy graduate simply because of the sentiments attach to education.. U get BSC, masters, or PhD no means say you go rich pass all non graduates. They might not know how to read but they sure do know to trade, work earn a living by providing services needed even by so called graduates. Life is deep. In Nigeria your certificate without proper connection nah ordinary paper wey suya man go use am Las Las |

Non graduates do a lot of things for validation Ranging from joining confraternity to seizing political power |

I’ve seen graduates who would definitely pass as illiterates as they can neither read nor write properly. |

Illiterate envy graduate. |
| Re: Do Illiterates Envy School Graduates? by OneHonestMan: 12:25pm On Dec 10, 2025 |
I will only believe you when a secondary school certificate holder becomes American President or UK/Canada Prime Minister. Infact give me one President of any serious country (minus Nigeria) whose President or Ministers or any of the elected officers are educated at only the school certificate level. Go and write Jamb and upgrade. There is wide gap between being a graduate and non-graduate. obama30:of |

A graduate without a job is a fool!!! Literacy opens a wide net of opportunities for you, you can be literate and educated and still be a fool. An uneducated man would always envy a successful graduate even if they have same financial standing, fact! My uncle once asked me to spell Launch, that he ways always thinking it’s same as Lunch, when I explained this simple concept, he was just looking at me like I solved a 2,000 year puzzle. He never stopped talking about that day. Graduates, if you like, go to school and be sorting lecturers instead of reading, you’re gonna have the certificate but you’ll know NOTHING |
