What Percentage Of Nigerians Have Done NIN? by lawani(op): 3:11pm On Dec 09, 2025
The total number of NIN registration including those that have died is around one hundred and twenty six million. If we can estimate the percentage of Nigerians that have done NIN by checking a population sample, then we will be able to arrive at a good estimate of Nigeria"s population.
The people that have not done NIN are people that don't need bank accounts, most especially children who are not yet in higher institutions
What percentage of the population do you think the one hundred and twenty six million represents?

NIN is compulsory for all Nigerians.

The government should start closing the loopholes.

I mean that children leave it off until they need it. The point I am driving at is that with a good identity management commission there will be no need to spend money on census. And another point is are we really up to 220 million?

I believe it is around 60% of Nigerians. Those in the diaspora and most of the underaged children yet to attain the age of maturity are not included in the NIN population.

Well, you need NIN if you live in the cities and rural areas not far from the urban areas.

If you are a rural farmer that lives out in the rural areas, and has been doing nothing but farming, you may not need NIN

For example, there are many states in the North who don't have banks in half their LGA's...which was a major problem with Buhari's cashless policy. And that means millions without BVN and even NIN.

The problem really is our records system does not cover the entire country...if it did, maybe we would see some improvement. Maybe if we had mobile teams that registered every new birth and issued a NIN for each child born...maybe..

But for now the only way to count nigerians is a census, not NIN or BVN. (The controverises over census arise because all states in nigeria are not productive enough, and even when we had regions, all of them were not earning enough to function well without government help...so census figures are used to allocate government resources...which is very flawed and leads to inflated numbers...that's why you people should vote for sane leaders who will cure us of resource dependency)

I don't agree with you that a sizeable percentage of Northern adults don't have NIN. Have you been following and analyzing the registration?. The last time I checked the North has over 55 million entries with the South having over 43 million. The gap is even wider than one would have expected so they are registering in the North. How many Northerners have you ever encountered without a bank account? Their states don't have as much banks as southern states neither do they have as much hotels and I really wonder why but what is NIN if not census by other means? I trust NIN more than census. However the indicator of population that I trust most is igr.

We may really not be up to because it is hard to believe that children are almost half the population. If children are almost half the population then we are up to

The dead will have NIN because there is no mechanism yet of knocking them out when they die. I think the right way is for morgues to be asking for NIN or sending records they collect from family members to the NIMC so that the record of dead people can be knocked out

If it is sixty percent then the total population will be around 205 million. They don't count diasporeans in the census but aliens living in the country will be counted.

With the total NIN registration at 126 million, we can estimate that the population is over 200 million.
