Syrian soldiers chant anti-Israel slogans in Damascus military parade marking one year since Assad’s fall

Syrian military personnel vowed to confront Israel and chanted in praise of Gaza during a military parade in Damascus on Monday, marking the first anniversary of the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad.

Footage circulated on social media showed soldiers marching in formation while chanting: "Gaza, Gaza, the slogan of victory and steadfastness, day and night," followed by, "We are coming for you, our enemy, coming from the mountain of fire," and "I will make ammunition from my blood, and make rivers from yours." There has been no official comment on the matter from Syrian authorities, though the chants emerged during a broader state-led commemoration across Syrian cities.

Belal al-Bukhary, an Egyptian graphic designer and activist known for supporting both Palestine and Syria, praised the chants in a post to his 110,000 followers on X. He wrote that while it is unrealistic to expect "the new Syria" to fight a war for Gaza, the emotional slogans expressed a meaningful sense of cross-border solidarity and "universal loyalty."

In contrast, Syrian-Kurdish TV personality Rouchan Bozou criticized the chants, arguing that involving Gaza in Syria's independence celebrations undermined Syrian national identity. She accused authorities of recycling slogans and keeping Syrians trapped in a state of perpetual war, writing: "Syrians need an army that protects them, not one that uses them for wars they have nothing to do with."

Israeli officials appear to be treating the rhetoric as a potential indicator of shifting dynamics in Syria, prompting both diplomatic and security responses.
