How Are Nigerian 9-to-5 Workplaces Routines Causing Relationship Problems? by Akinpedia(op): 12:37am On Dec 10, 2025
Bro and sis, make una no lie to una self at all! That Lagos 9-to-5 hustle wey dey chop our time, energy, and peace—e no just dey stress body, e dey silently scatter and ruin marriages all around the place. From the daily Third Mainland Bridge gridlock wey dey make us late and exhausted to the office "work spouses" wey some people dey form, na real serious crisis dey happen for our relationships these days. Wetin really dey cause all this wahala? Make we break am down sharp, sharp and understand the full koko.

Long Hours and Zero Work-Life Balance

Nigerian workers, particularly those based in Lagos, often struggle with excessively long working hours that frequently exceed 48 hours each week. This demanding schedule results in significant burnout and high levels of stress, leaving many employees with little to no quality time to spend with their families or engage in personal activities.

The ongoing pressure from extended work hours negatively impacts their overall well-being and work-life balance, creating challenges that affect both their professional performance and personal lives.

- A significant 83.9% of working women in Lagos have reported that enduring long working hours is their biggest wahala, which ultimately leaves them completely drained and without any energy left to spend quality time with their partner or pikin. This overwhelming fatigue from extended work commitments severely affects their ability to nurture personal relationships and fulfill family responsibilities effectively.

- Banks and corporate jobs often require employees to work overtime, which, unfortunately, turns what should be quality "home time" into mere "sleep time." This demanding work culture is contributing significantly to marital dissatisfaction among many couples. In fact, this issue is so pronounced that divorce filings have surged, reaching a staggering 4,000 cases in Lagos courts within just eight months. This trend highlights the growing strain on personal relationships caused by the pressures of modern work life.

Lagos Traffic: The Marriage Thief

That Third Mainland Bridge or Ikorodu Road hold-up na serious marriage killer! Drivers and workers dey spend extra 3 to 5 hours daily just dey stuck for road, come home completely exhausted like zombie wey no get energy at all. This kind long hours for traffic dey really affect their family life and emotional wellbeing badly.

- About 75% of people living in Lagos experience significant traffic stress on a regular basis, and this problem is causing serious strain on personal relationships. Due to the heavy traffic congestion, many partners find it difficult or even impossible to see each other as often as they would like. As a result, social lives have been greatly affected, with many people feeling isolated and disconnected from their loved ones because of the constant delays and frustration caused by traffic jams. This ongoing issue is not just about inconvenience but is also threatening the emotional bonds between individuals.

- One female bus driver shared her experience, explaining that even though she works 12-hour days plus deals with heavy traffic, she still has to "reserve strength for other room" in order to keep her marriage alive and healthy. However, she noted that many others in similar situations find it difficult or impossible to cope with these demands and maintain their relationships.

Salary Stress and Office Spouses Wahala

Low salary and running out of money by mid-month is no joke—it often causes husbands and wives to become distant strangers within their own homes, driving them to seek solace and "comfort" in their workplaces.

Many Nigerian banks have implemented policies that ban marriage between coworkers because such relationships often lead to infidelity, forced resignations, and high employee turnover rates—30% attrition between 2007 and 2012 was linked to these issues.

- "Office spouses" and workplace romance are increasingly common and widespread phenomena, with numerous instances of bank executives and staff members blending their professional duties with personal romantic relationships. These entanglements often result in significant scandals and emotional heartbreak for those involved, affecting both personal lives and workplace dynamics.

- Infidelity has become quite common in many modern Nigerian marriages, and it is not something that happens only on the part of the men—women are also often involved in such situations. This widespread issue is largely driven by factors such as the physical distance caused by demanding job commitments and the high levels of stress that both partners experience in their daily lives.

Office Romance: Silent Infidelity Bomb

From casual "work wives and work husbands" relationships to serious instances of full-blown cheating, Nigerian workplaces have become a notable hotbed for such activities. Statistics clearly indicate that if your spouse is going to be unfaithful, there is a high probability that the person they are cheating with is one of their colleagues whom they interact with on a daily basis. This trend highlights the complex dynamics of office romance and its impact on personal relationships within the Nigerian work environment.

- Policies often prohibit coworker marriages in an effort to prevent declines in employee loyalty and to maintain high morale within the workplace, but these rules do not completely eliminate workplace “maintenance” behaviors or the occurrence of hidden romantic affairs among colleagues.

- The rate of women’s infidelity is increasing significantly as economic pressures continue to mount, which is contributing to a rise in serious social and health issues such as the spread of HIV, increased cases of depression, and higher divorce rates. Economic hardships often place immense stress on marital relationships, which can lead some women to seek emotional or financial support outside their marriages. This trend not only affects the individuals involved but also has broader implications for public health and societal stability. More information can be found in the detailed study available .

E don finish? No be so at all! Who be the person wey go fit change am?

Make I just contribute small to your long tori...

Office romance ? Nah, I don't subscribe to it... "my mama teach me not to shit in the place I eat." Although, I build close friendships M/F for a mutual time of need (excluding romance).
I mean I do my sina (waywardness) faaarr away.

Then as per traffic..? Best to have an understanding Partner.
Regularly and around specific hrs, my spouse will call/text briefly just to check on how my day is going. "It's often said the market could be unstable, but the home shouldn't."
So, it's vital to know that as you make your bed, so you lay on it.

Lastly, the weekend is strictly family time, infact from Friday evening. We unwind and refresh ahead ahead... unless I get worthy side hustle.
Honestly, you'd be as lucky as a man that found gold... if I pick your calls for any work/office related stuffs at weekends even if you are my boss, abi you wan call pesin wey dey airplane mode? grin
People know, so they adapt... QED

You’ve dropped gems o! 😂
I love how you’ve balanced sense with humour.

Office romance—fair point. Not everyone can separate emotions from environment, and honestly your mama’s advice is premium wisdom. Some people don use workplace turn heartbreak HQ.

And that part about having an understanding partner? Spot on. Stability at home really does make the “market” less chaotic. It’s the small check-ins that build something solid.

As for weekends—omo, your boundaries are elite! Airplane mode from Friday evening? I respect it. People who protect their peace like that actually show up better everywhere else.

Thanks for adding your perspective. This your “small contribution” na full masterclass. 😄👏🏾

For the peace issue, even bible said love your neighbour as yourself... not more than yourself. How will I deliver well if I'm not well recharged or okay myself.
