darediamond:Nigerians are the ones doing themselves Like now, only 20% of you pay cost reflective tarrifs, 60% of metered houses bypass the meters and most are underpaying the discos and by extension the gencos. Result is low profit and most of the time massive losses How come gsm works so well, you can call your brother in the village or your cousin in the USA? Note that in the 1980s this was not possible for most Nigerians, unless you lived in a town with a phone exchange. It was because when gsm companies came to Nigeria they were allowed to charge tarrifs that allowed them to make enough profits for improvement If every Nigerian stopped bypassing meters and paid what band A pays , we will see improvement. No one is sabotaging Nigerians. Nigerians are the ones sabotaging themselves. |

osuofia2:Southy also charges cost reflective tarrifs compared to Nigeria. To the point that sometimes power prices can jump up twice in a month. And even then, they don't have enough power self. Nigeria where sixty percent of people bypass meters, meaning power companies operate at a loss, meaning they cannot supply power effectively And before you start, aba power company was supplying 24 hour a day power and people were complaining of how expensive it was. Same thing with band a people Nigerians think electricity is free. That's why we don't have light. Even government owes discos and gencos self. |

ARISHEM:Corruption is the result of cost reflective tarrifs not being paid and people treating power as free things. Only 20% of customers for electricity pays a cost reflective tarrifs. That's like you selling bread at 1200 a loaf and only 20% of your customers pay that price, 40% take your bread without paying and the rest pay less than 300 naira. Your business go prosper? |
| Re: Top 10 African Countries With Most Reliable Electricity Supply by nairalanda1(m): 6:09am On Dec 11, 2025 |
VeeVeeMyLuv:But earlier you said VeeVeeMyLuv:At the end,to build new power plants , even solar powered plants like the one in morroco , costs a whole lot of money. And that can be obtained by cost reflective tarrifs. We need 15 trillion or more naira annually for the next ten years to fix power. Unless you want government to be borrowing that yearly ( and it is subject to increase ), that money would have to come from investment and no one is going to invest in a sector where poverty is keeping people from paying the light bill. No ROI Either we pay cost reflective tarrifs or we forget about decent power |

Great100000:We know this is your objective of bringing the topic. Emergency lovers of Nigeria who must wake up daily to drag the nation they so much love like their egungun brother pitobi. Move to the next topic of bashing Nigeria. Nigerians are now used to your strategic. Una go soon get tired. |

E2000:Here you go! No country is self sufficient in everything. None of these country is up to 100million in population. A family of 4 and a family of 14 can not have same quality of life. You think the same efforts required to provide food for 2 people will be required to provide for 20people? We can do better. I provide my own electricity because I can afford it. It is almost 2years since power generation, transmission and distribution has been decentralized. Why have the state governors not increasing the generation and distribution in their states? This degeneration of power infrastructures did not happen overnight and can not be fixed over night. But regardless, we are still the Giant of Africa and we will forever be. Other countries know we are. Only those among us who could not see deeper and are only fixated on the problems instead of opportunities are the ones always seeing and talking down on their fatherland as foolish. When you insult your entire family outside, you fail to realise that the "Real shame is not on them, it is on you". Because next time, all of you will get the insults from the neighborhood. Then it would be too late to reverse. If you are a citizen of a "foolish country", what does that make you? You can answer that yourself |

IDERAWOLE:Check all my topics very and I am not that type of character you are trying to portray... I am a Nigerian and who love my country. If my country is doing good things I will appreciate them and if they're not doing great I will voice out. Funny enough one person called me Govt Data Boy and you now is calling me emergency lover of Nigeria. Very funny |

IronGalaxy:DEI inclusion. That's why you survive by grants, subsides and payment from America who embarrassed you publicly like tiny Burundi. I woke up this morning to 4 mentions by 4 Zulus. But I have never dedicated my mornings to pandering to Zulu emotions. I have work to do and an office to run, not much we can say for majority of your demographic. Next time, my friends ![]() |

| Re: Top 10 African Countries With Most Reliable Electricity Supply by nairalanda1(m): 8:01am On Dec 11, 2025 |
osuofia2:Discos are not the problem. It's the fact that by law they cannot charge cost reflective tarrifs (and as such have to rip off customers with things like estimated billing, or they collapse financially)...and the fact that most people underpay or do not pay at all...that prevents them from making a profit That has knock on effects on the money remitted to gencos and TCN Ghana allows charging of cost reflective tarrifs, yet, power is expensive there that people turn off the electiricty supply at night because it helps them save money on their power bills. All the corruption we talk about? Same issues with subsidsed prices. When a sector is forced to charge below cost of production, corruption will result, as well as other messing up. Many communist countries used to force their farmers to sell produce at cheap prices...and that led to shortages, and massive black markettering of food, as well as corruption. Once these price controls were removed, nothing like corruption, and the shelves were full In short, a business survives on making money. Power supply IS A BUSINESS. If people are underpaying or not paying, palaver go start. |

nairalanda1:How will I pay cost reflective tariffs as Nigerian consumer when i foot the bills for buying of transformers, electric poles, meters, and maintaining them, Is it supposed to be my responsibility as a consumer? |
| Re: Top 10 African Countries With Most Reliable Electricity Supply by nairalanda1(m): 8:22am On Dec 11, 2025 |
Jakarta:You foot the bills for transformers, electric polies, meters and maintenance, because you don't pay a cost reflective tarrif, therefore your local disco cannot make the profit needed to do that effortlessly for you, so you end up doing it. That has been the problem since we had NEPA. |

Maybe if it was 11 Nig.... fit dey am! |
| Re: Top 10 African Countries With Most Reliable Electricity Supply by Jakarta: 8:30am On Dec 11, 2025 |
nairalanda1:And what makes you think if the Discos are ready to take full responsibility, for reliable and efficient power people won't pay cost reflective tariffs? Nigeria erratic and poor power supply has nothing to do with people not paying cost reflective tariffs. |
| Re: Top 10 African Countries With Most Reliable Electricity Supply by nairalanda1(m): 8:34am On Dec 11, 2025 |
Jakarta:Because they won't earn profits, or attract investment otherwise. We aren't under NEPA things since 2013. Nigeria erratic and poor power supply has nothing to do with people not paying cost reflective tariffs.Denying a problem does not mean the problem doesn't exist. I also suggest you run a business where 19% of your consumers pay you the appropriate price, while the rest underpay or not pay at all for your service. You will soon see why. You sound like a father who does not give his child food, and expects him to do his chores and come first in class every term. |
| Re: Top 10 African Countries With Most Reliable Electricity Supply by Jakarta: 9:50am On Dec 11, 2025 |
nairalanda1:I don't think you understood the question I asked, read it slowly so you will understand it. Denying a problem does not mean the problem doesn't exist. There are various customers tiers in business. There are customers that businesses go the extra limits for in terms of services offered because, they are very confident of these customers paying for the extra service rendered. What stops Discos from doing this? You sound like a father who does not give his child food, and expects him to do his chores and come first in class every term.Lazy excuses, and chasing shadows, people will pay for reliable service rendered. A good number of Nigeria homes still spent heavily on fueling their generators, they will gladly pay for reliable power. |

| Re: Top 10 African Countries With Most Reliable Electricity Supply by Jakarta: 10:26am On Dec 11, 2025 |
nairalanda1:Can you please point out where I opposed cost reflective tariff? You don't expect me to pay cost reflective tariffs when I'm shouldering the responsibilities of disco. I will gladly pay cost reflective tariff when they start taking responsibilities. Engaging you is nothing more like beating a dead horse, I've wasted too much time in ELI5 to you. My last response is this. |

erico2k2:Not true!! Many South Africa already produces electricity that will meet our electrical needs. Nigeria's problem is our (citizens) demand for government to subsidize electricity. This make investors hesitate to invest in that sector. The moment investors can be sure they can recoup their investments, we will meet our electrical needs. This will be met by investors and not government |
