"No one dares touch Seyi Tinubu’s personal security team, not even the IG of Police" – Rufai Oseni

Popular Arise TV anchor Rufai Oseni has thrown down the gauntlet in a manner that only he can: blunt, fearless, and straight to the point.

During Wednesday’s edition of The Morning Show (December 10, 2025), Oseni reacted to Nobel laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka’s widely circulated criticism of the heavy security entourage that accompanies Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Tinubu.

Soyinka had narrated how he was stunned to see what he called a “small battalion” of armed policemen, soldiers, and DSS operatives escorting a young man at a Lagos hotel. When he discovered it was the president’s son, the literary icon described the display as “obscene,” especially at a time when ordinary Nigerians live in constant fear of kidnappers and bandits. He urged the authorities to “stop overdoing things.”

President Tinubu himself had, only weeks earlier, ordered the immediate withdrawal of police officers attached to VIPs across the country so they could be redeployed to fight rising insecurity. Yet, as Soyinka’s encounter showed, some VIPs appear to be more important than others.

That contradiction was all Rufai Oseni needed.

Speaking on live television, he said the presidential directive would be obeyed everywhere except when it comes to Seyi Tinubu.

His exact words, delivered partly in the street-sharp Pidgin that resonates with millions of viewers, have since gone viral: “Dem no born anybody in Nigeria to remove police officers guiding Seyi Tinubu not even the IG of Police himself. Dem no born am well!”

In plain English: no one, not even the Inspector-General of Police, has the courage or authority to withdraw Seyi Tinubu’s security detail.

Oseni argued that while politicians, businessmen, and traditional rulers may eventually lose their police escorts, the president’s son remains untouchable a living symbol of how power truly works in Nigeria.

The studio exchange with co-anchor Dr. Reuben Abati underlined the point: Abati: “Even the IG can’t do it?”

Oseni: “My brother, dem no born am well.”

Within hours, the clip spread across WhatsApp, Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok, sparking heated debates about privilege, nepotism, and the unequal distribution of security in a country where farmers are killed daily and schoolchildren are still being abducted.

As of now, neither the Presidency, the Nigeria Police Force, nor Seyi Tinubu has responded to the growing controversy.

But one thing is clear: in the court of public opinion, Rufai Oseni has spoken for millions who feel that, in today’s Nigeria, some citizens are simply more equal and far better protected than others.

Nigeria has changed significantly... for this reason, Rufai is correct (for the first time); the first son must be protected at all costs. It is crucial for everyone to recognize that Seyi is not a VIP, but rather the first son. Kidnappers or adversaries would be eager to seize the boy. Thus, ensuring his safety should be a top priority for the federal government.
Wole Shoyinka is someone I admire, but he might need to examine this situation more closely. Seyi's protection is essential.

Command in Chief would have very high threat level both within and outside. So it's understandable but it shouldn't be too visible.

It doesn't mean you will release battalion of soldiers to be guarding and following him when there are millions of vulnerable Nigerians out there without security. One or two armed policemen is okay.

We cannot dictate what is ideal for safeguarding this individual, as none of us here are security specialists. We should be aware and intelligent enough to recognize that the protection of these entities depends on the current situation in the country, meaning that every day or week presents new challenges. His security must be extremely tight and consistent; anything less would be a significant error.

For example, while there are no known kidnappers in the USA, you certainly wouldn't want to see President Trump or his children unprotected. It is essential that the protocol for their protection remains exceptionally tight, intimidating, and consistent.

I have seen President Trump's convoy along with his children's a few times; and I can assure you that it is absolutely wild! you will not believe it.

He can't go around alone because he has made himself the assistant president. Is he the only child Tinubu has, and must he go around with such a large number of security men?

This is just the much-needed tonic by those who had for a long time called out the Nobel Laurette for not criticizing Tinubu but was very active in criticizing Goodluck Jonathan back then because Tinubu happens to be his tribesman.

Now that he has expressed his shock at what he called a "battalion" protecting the President's son, Seyi Tinubu, he has suddenly become a darling of sorts to them.

By tomorrow, when he says something complimentary about Mr President, they, in their usual manner, would rain all manner of insults at him.

Their enemy (Mr President) must be your enemy or get classified as a supporter of the President.

This is why they continue to be irrelevant and carry last not only in Nigeria, but globally. This will continue till the end of time, simply because common sense isn't common or for sale.
Wole Shoyinka remains a blessing and an assets to Nigeria.

May God bless Our president and our country.
