Peter Obi, sparked fresh controversy as he labelled Nigerian Muslims beggars and claimed begging is part of Islamic culture

In a now-viral video, the former Anambra governor, speaking at an event, shared an experience from one of his visits to Indonesia.

Obi said that during the visit, he asked some Muslims there—along with the Indonesian president—why no almajiri or people were begging on the streets, as is often seen in Nigeria.

“In Indonesia, I met everyone, from ministers to the vice president and even the president. Indonesia has the largest Muslim population in the world. When we were there, I turned to the two Muslims with me, and I asked the leaders: ‘Do you have Almajiri children here?’ They said, ‘No.’

"So I asked the president, "Why don’t you have children begging on the streets? Isn’t it part of Muslim culture?"

According to him, the president replied: “Why would they be begging? They are educated. Educate your people and they become productive.”

He also recalled visiting the Sultan’s residence, where he noticed a large statue of Jesus Christ and the Virgin Mary. Surprised, he asked why such Christian symbols were displayed in the home of a Muslim leader. The response he got was simple: “It was a gift, and it is a good statue.”

Obi then asked a pointed question: “So why is our own situation in Nigeria so different?”

This is not the first time Peter Obi has made controversial remarks about Muslims. Shortly before the presidential election, Obi was captured on audio asking Oyedepo to help mobilise Christian voters, particularly in the north-central states of Kwara, Kogi, and Niger. In the conversation, he described the election as a religious war. At one point, he said: “Daddy, I need you to speak to your people in the south-west and Kwara, the Christians in the south-west and Kwara. This is a religious war. Like I keep saying: if this works, you people will never regret the support.”
A religious bigot to the core.

Why is our own situation in Nigeria different?. According to Obi, why is begging part of Muslim Culture in Nigeria and why are Muslims in Nigeria not tolerant of their Christian counterpart like in Indonesia.

Some people defending Obi are not intellectually smart. Obi knows begging is not part of Islamic culture but he deliberately asked such silly question to denigrate Muslims in Nigeria.

How about his observation of the statue of Mary at the Sultan's residence in Indonesia, implying Muslims in Nigeria are less tolerant compared to Indonesia. The question is, how many Islamic symbols would you find at a Priest's residence in Nigeria?. Even Obi himself, how many of such Islamic symbols does he have at home?.

A good friend of mine up north shared a similar experience he had in the 90s when he visited Saudi Arabia. The wisdom of that Nigerian friend continues to resonate till today.

According to a Yoruba proverb one's horse can never be high in the eyes of one's hater.
Even, when what Obi says is real, raw truth and very glaring, taqqiya and lover of lies and deception will still crucify him.
We failed to separate religion, petty politics and manipulating tribalism from our existence. This is why we are where we are. No society progresses on basis of lies and manipulating tendencies.

Begging is not peculiar to any particular race or religion. However, Islam see it as a religious obligation to do charity by the elites( zakat) while indirectly using same to hold their poor to slavery and servitude. Meanwhile, it is grossly insensitive of Peter Obi to make that senseless statement.

Obi asked a rhetorical question to buttress his belief that Islam is really not synonymous with begging as Nigeria's case seem to suggest with the Alimajiri system.
But you guys are free to twist it to suit any narrative of your choosing. If you vote Obi, you win. If you don't vote him, only you will still loose.
Obi gains or looses nothing if he becomes president. He has said again and again that he is not desperate to become president, but to see Nigeria work. Suit yourselves.

But it is definitely not. There is also nothing like blasphemy and you can burn the koran or do whatever in advanced countries of the world. It may be offensive and you may be done for disturbing the peace but in the end its only a book.
