Toke Makinwa Claims Men Are The “real Gold Diggers” In Today’s Relationships by Cofficial(op): 10:13am On Dec 12, 2025
Media personality and style icon Toke Makinwa has ignited a new national conversation on gender roles, marriage, and financial expectations—this time turning the lens on men.

In the latest episode of her podcast, Makinwa challenged the long-held stereotype that women are the primary seekers of wealth in romantic relationships.

Speaking candidly, she criticised how society uses the “gold digger” label almost exclusively against women while ignoring the growing trend of men intentionally pursuing wealthy partners.

We heard you put to bed, where is the father of the baby? If truly you are married, you should be beyond this stage of men are the real gold digger except otherwise. A tike will come when makeover wont cover the old age anymore. Go ask Celine dion. Make hay while the sun shine.

This is what happens when you HORED your way into old age and still act like you are the hot stuff.

She likely has a spec.
And she could get her spec when she was still younger.

Now that she's OLD and reproductively STALE, she's NO longer her spec's spec.

Her spec can get BETTER, HOTTER and YOUNGER girls...with LESSER baggage.
They have ZERO reason to look in her direction.

That's why she's reduced to courting GIGOLOS and SPERM DONORS.

A terminally ONLINE celebrity had a child but couldn't even reveal the FATHER.

Why?

'Cause nothing says LOSER like admitting you (aka hot stuff) PAID for a sperm donor.

Finally, she needs to STOP complaining.
Men have been dealing with GOLD DIGGERS for ages.

Equal opportunity is here to stay.

Haha, I never thought of it that way! 🤔 Society really loves to paint women as ‘gold diggers,’ but men chasing wealthy partners seems almost normalized. It makes you wonder how much of these labels are just outdated stereotypes. What do you guys think—are men really the ‘hidden gold diggers’ these days, or is it more complicated than that?

This is the story when women are past the wall or become used goods.

You don’t hear desirable 20 year olds say this. They’re too busy thinking of which sugar daddy will pay for their meals, rent and lifestyle. Now, let that 20 year old turn 40 without self improvement of any sort. She’ll constantly meet 30 something year olds and older men who’ve perfected the craft of preying on women’s insecurities. Beautiful women have insecurities too. The men who realize it are those who put in the work of serially dating.

Honestly, I disagree. Reality— what we see usually point the other way.

Most Nigerian men are still dating and marrying younger. They generally aren't looking for a woman richer than them, but someone with a good skill or business idea that can help support the home and be improved over time. Let's be real, a lot of guys still prefer to marry virgins, too.

I think the focus needs to be on 'boys,' not 'men.' If a lady is only chasing that 'bad boy' look—the muscles and the looks—she's basically setting herself up to be exploited. But the minute she decides to look past the physical stuff and focus on character, she will definitely find a solid partner. The real challenge is, how many ladies are actually patient enough to wait for the right guy?

Most of the posters who dropped some comments above me are dumber than I thought. Instead of them to analyse the issue from an unbiased point of view, they have already started throwing insults and calling Toke old just because she made a salient observation.

NB: How to know if someone is dumb: By mocking an old person forgetting that old age is inevitable.

Back to the discussion. Even among married couples, men are becoming gold diggers. How else can you describe a situation when a man refuses to contribute to the upkeep of the family, and expects the wife to shoulder majority of the bills?

So, to all the katagelasticists above me, I hope you know that katagelasticism is a psychological disorder that can degenerate into something serious. Y'all should get some help cos you are already losing it since mocking others give you intense pleasure. undecided undecided undecided

You have a point, but let's be practical and honest with ourselves.

Yes, there are men who sponge off women, but in the Nigerian context, how many homes can survive that dynamic? How many women can realistically shoulder the full responsibility of a household for more than two years without the man eventually feeling the heat or the home becoming uncomfortable?

Truth be told, any man who is genuinely happy and comfortable with his wife paying all the bills indefinitely is likely a man who has lost his ambition or purpose. A man with drive hates being in that position.

We need to make a clear distinction here

Basically, a gold digger is someone who gets into a romantic relationship primarily for money or material gain, rather than for love or a genuine connection.

Most of the men people drag in these conversations didn’t enter the marriage for money. They were struck by misfortune—job loss, failed business, or economic downturn. That can happen to anyone, male or female.
Many of these men are battling deep depression and frustration. Some even turn to alcohol or cigarettes just to cope with the shame of not providing.

So, while male gold diggers definitely exist, we must differentiate them from responsible family men who are just going through a hard season. Lumping them together is unfair.

Lol...You talk like this because you have no idea of what is happening in most Nigerian homes. If women cannot realistically shoulder full responsibility, why do I see many women hawking all day just to put food on the table, while their lazy husbands drink themselves to stupor or idle away at football centres?

Truth be told, any man who is genuinely happy and comfortable with his wife paying all the bills indefinitely is likely a man who has lost his ambition or purpose.

I like to think that when you describe 'men', you are referring to all categories of men, and not just successful, comfortable or educated men. If not for the few successful men who act responsibly, I hope you know there are many others who have switched roles with their wives.

We need to make a clear distinction here

Basically, a gold digger is someone who gets into a romantic relationship primarily for money or material gain, rather than for love or a genuine connection.

Though your definition of a gold digger is correct , it is broader than you think. A gold digger is someone who relies on another for financial gains without genuine affection for them. So, you can have friends, spouses or even neighbours who are gold diggers.

Most of the men people drag in these conversations didn’t enter the marriage for money.

How would you know that? Did they tell you their intentions while dating? Nowadays, many men marry girls because of their family's status. A girl may come from a modest background, but a guy may marry her because one of her siblings is based abroad. I have seen that play out on many occasions.

They were struck by misfortune—job loss, failed business, or economic downturn.

Being struck by misfortune is not an excuse to become financially dependent on your wife who may also be struggling. The truth is, take away the white collar jobs most Nigerian men have, and watch them amount to nothing. This is because, they are so used to their comfort zones, that they find it difficult to survive after the loss of a job.

So, while male gold diggers definitely exist, we must differentiate them from responsible family men who are just going through a hard season. Lumping them together is unfair.

Have you considered the fact that my post was referring to the irresponsible family men who are lazy, unambitious, and see nothing wrong in depending on their wives?
Like I said earlier, even in marriages, there are men who are gold diggers.

Men na gold diggers. See insult Chai!!!!!!!
I get one better idea wey go settle this matter once and for all.

Make all Nigerian men form one association quick. The name go be something like United Brothers of Nigeria (UBN)

For this December, all of us go go on total strike! No more funding for any side chick, any sugar baby, any ajebo baby. Os, ETC. AT ALL!

Let's hold our money tight like eagle hold chicken. No dash, no shopping spree, no baby my rent o, no daddy my hair need fixing. NOTHING!

by January, I promise e go be like film. Many of this baby girls go don pack comot for their fine house because landlord go dey whistle for their ear say, Dem go begin dey move like ghost up and down. Some go run go village claim say na family emergency.

The ones wey dey call themselves Queens and Baddies go dey outside, begging to enter their friend's one room, just for few days.Aje Street go full of former slay queens

women and men we go finally know who dey truly dig for gold, and who dey mine the gold in the first place!

Abeg, make who agree with this our proposal shout "Aye!"

You are still missing the critical point of timing and intent.

Gold digging, by definition, is an act that precedes the relationship or marriage itself. A true gold digger enters the arrangement specifically to acquire wealth or status they do not already possess.

You cannot 'seek' something you already have.

Let's be fair when assessing these situations. If you poll the majority of those women, you’ll find that they married the man when he was indeed wealthy, or at the very least, ambitious and working toward success. Things simply took an unexpected turn later on.
