For $1 million, It wasn’t a blunder per se especially since she’s young. It all depends on her plans and life goals.

If you opt for the cash prize, you only get about half the money. After paying taxes, you’re left with a quarter of the money you won.

If you opt for the monthly sum, you get the full amount, and because your annual payout is low, tax on the payout will be lower

First year she saves enough to make a down payment on a home. Then she uses the monthly sum to continue paying her mortgage, keeps her current job and doesn’t have to work extra hard like most people abroad.
Canada does not tax winnings on lottery. She made a very poor financial decision. She could buy a house for 500k pay cash then put tenants that will pay her more than $1k weekly. , then fix the remaining money in a bank or stock market for compounding interest payments. Again many white people don't go to school so they are financially illiterate

I can't be here in Nigeria and be able to state if she made a wise decision or not.

I need to understand the facts correct to be able to conclude.

I been think say na daily 1k sef. But I think it's a smart move. If she has some good financial advisers. Beside, most winners that opt for the lump sum usually end up broke in few years from mismanagement and bad advice.

Wrong decision because the organisation can go bankrupt and wind up. They're protected by law.

Collect one million dollars, invest and reap much more than that money you'll collect in a lifetime in ten years or even less.

Wrong choice, over time inflation will override the value of the $1000. She could easily invest $1m and get better returns.

Re: Is This Financial Blunder Or Wise Decision? by frank417: 9:30pm On Dec 12, 2025
She has leverage now. she can focus on her own dreams, and take this money as support. she can even make that $1m on her own. $52,000 free cash every year without working for it.

I’ve done the maths, if it’s truely for life, after 20 years she will have earned the 1m and the rest would be interest but if she took the 1m and invested in a HYSA and some index funds she’ll be smiling to the bank sooner than later.

20-year-old lottery winner decides against $1M lump sum, opts for lifetime weekly annuity in hopes of buying a home

A 20-year-old Canadian woman named Brenda Aubin-Vega won the Gagnant à Vie lottery in Quebec and was faced with a choice between a one-time $1 million payout or $1,000 per week for life.

According She chose the weekly payments $1,000 every week.

The weekly payment isn’t just a gimmick lottery rules in Quebec often allow winners to pick annuity-style lifetime payments. In similar past cases, other winners have also chosen the weekly option.

To dear nairalanders, what's Ur thoughts about her decision, does she make wise decision or financial blunder?

If you are in her shoes, which one will you pick?

You’re actually right, and not just is the money not subject to tax, she also gets the full lottery amount, not half, if she opts for the lump sum.

$1m today has greater value than $1,000 per week ($52,000 per annum) in perpetuity, representing just circa 5% returns.

I hope the company doesn't fold without paying her the lifetime thingy. She should've collected all her money grin

Collect all the money, invest 80% in stocks and real estate. Use the rest to finance your education and lifestyle.
Money is no longer with the company, fund was invested in annuity that will pay her $1000 per week for life

Things would become more expensive then due to growing prices and what happens if the company folds or are bankrupt in the future? She could have done a lot for her future by splitting that money into different investments now.

First off, it’s going to take her roughly 20 years to get a million bucks at the rate of $1k per week. So, why don't you just grab the twenty years' worth of payments right now and start planning your retirement? It’s like picking a quick 10k over getting a solid 500k—you can actually do something tangible with the bigger amount (rent, enough provision etc), but the small one won't even buy dinner for 2 days. Besides the company might crash before then.
Be like you never do business fail before even with concrete plans
