This is a thread to celebrate my first plant. I could barely take care of myself so I’ve never thought of looking after anything! Not a child, not a pet, not a plant.

Then one day I was making guacamole 🥑 and I looked at the avocado seed and thought; I wonder if I could grow this?

I live in a cold country so it’s never going to grow into an avocado tree that blooms and grows fruits. But I saw YouTube videos on bonze/bonsai style avocado trees. I’m hooked!

My baby is called Bionic-boy and he will be 5 months old on the 13th of December.

Did you grow this without soil?

Youtubes please, as I go searching.

What water do you use?

And how often do you change it?

Do you add any nutrients?

I’m waiting for spring so I could start the bonsai part.

I’m surprised every day I see him because I used coffee jars (clean) and tap water! I change the water every 3/5 days. I talk to him and cheer him on 😂! I pray for him because I have no power to make it grow.

Be sure to peel the seed clean before you start putting it in water. His sister died because I didn’t peel the seed well enough and mould started growing on her 😭.

Budaatum, a sweet potato can be grown in the same way. I’m hooked on growing things in water 😆

Thank you so lovely you open my eye.

I've set February in my diary when we get sun, so expect me back then if I go missing.

It needs nutrients
If you can get banana peels, you can use it's water as a natural fertiliser. Soak the banana peels in water for 3 to 6 days to create a liquid fertilizer.

That's a highly impressive timelapse video of 365 days of "seedling to Avocado Bonsai plant" growth compressed into a 3-minute video.

Whoa! Impressive videos... This is akin to aquaponics. Bonsai sweet potatoes germination in water.

Hi, good evening.
I am very sure. Was taught and used it several times back in secondary school. It works
I am sure if you check on Google, it will be the same

New developments:

So, while researching banana peel recipes for fertiliser, I fell down the rabbit hole of DWC (direct water culture) and time blindness set in. I read endless Redit threads, and watched countless YouTube videos on fertiliser and DWC methods.

I want to buy these stone like pumps that pump oxygen into the water without using electricity or any wires. I will buy plant fertiliser for him in the spring and use it sparingly because it could cause toxicity if not used properly.

I found out that at this stage of development, the seed holds enough nutrients to sustain bio-boy until he sheds his leaves 3 times which could be a year or more.

I also found out that I was filling up his water a bit too high so I have lowered it to cover only the roots and not halfway up the seed. He needs water and oxygen for his roots and he grew a whole cm since I did that.

Another new development is that algae is not good for his roots. My dumb ass thought the green stuff in the water was photosynthesis 🥴.
It was algae buildup. Luckily I changed his water when ever I noticed it but I didn’t see a problem with it coating his root and the base of the seed.

Yesterday, I gave bio-boy a gentle bath. I washed off the algae and used a cotton bud to clean the algae out of all the nooks and crannies. I found out that because roots are meant to be underground that direct sunlight causes algae and damage to the roots.

Bio-boy really does well on the window because the heater is underneath and the sun is life! So I decided to make him a temporary cape using a black bag to protect his roots from direct sunlight while allowing me to enjoy watching his root formation and being able to see the condition of the water.

I looked at the pros and cons of this method, and one of the cons is that it attracts fruit flies and gnats! That’s a no for me because I can’t deal with having pests indoors. Thanks for looking out though 🥰

Lowering his water levels, and protecting his roots from direct sunlight has done wonders for bionic boy 🦸‍♂️. He has doubled in height (14cm)and his roots look great.

Nice... Isn't this the same as hydroponic farming? You can grow literally every plant without soil. People do this on larger scale for commercial farming here in Lagos. It's a better alternative to soil and can be done indoors. I heard it increases yield by 30% compared to soil farming

Wow! I never knew this. I thought plants grown in this manner could not produce fruit. This is mind blowing. I’m going to research this and thanks to you, that’s another rabbit hole that I’ll probably spend days down. Thank you for sharing this with me 🫶
Re: Avocado Plant by Double0h7(op): 11:21am On Dec 15, 2025
I’m going to need a new ruler 📏 because my baby is taller than this ruler 🤣.

Bionic boy, standing tall at 16cm. 🥹👏👏👏

The stem is getting firmer so I need to research how to bonsai it now. I’m so anxious because if I wrap it too tight or bend his stem too far, I might break his stem 😭. I would wait until spring but his growth is rapid (nearly a cm a day). I ask Allah to protect, nourish, and keep him for me; amen 🤲

You're welcome. I even heard fruits from hydroponic farm system are even better.
