I was told history by the old folks that General Gowon’s time in power, were the prosperous years of the country, then I wonder if that was the case, why did Murtala Muhammad & Obasanjo overthrow him?

It's because the righteous who are mostly found in the church are not allowed to rule, that is why we have not rejoiced over all the past and present governments.
Many of the leaders we have now are corrupt, wicked and diabolical while many followers too are not different from their leaders when it comes to corruption and wickedness
