Hi guys, I created this thread to help everyday car owners understand their cars better and avoid unnecessary spending. A lot of the issues we rush to a mechanic for are things you can actually diagnose yourself with simple checks. Let me break down some common ones in a very simple way. 1. Rough Idling / Engine Shaking When You Stop Before panicking, check these: - Dirty throttle body - Weak/bad plugs - Vacuum leak - Dirty MAF sensor Most rough idling is caused by carbon buildup or weak spark, not a bad engine. 2. Car Jerks During Acceleration Start with these: - Coils - Fuel filter - Throttle body - Plug issues - Low ATF (automatic) A proper scan usually points to the right area fast. 3. High Fuel Consumption Most times it's caused by: - Under-inflated tires - Dirty injectors - Bad O2 sensor - Clogged air filter - Wrong oil viscosity 4. Vibration at Certain Speeds - If it starts around 80–100 km/h: wheel balancing. - If it happens while turning: check CV joint. - If it’s at low speeds and body vibration: engine/gearbox mount. 5. AC Not Cooling Well Before spending big money on AC overhaul: - Clean the condenser - Clean/replace cabin filter - Check for leaks - Confirm compressor clutch is engaging I’ll keep dropping more easy diagnostic tips here. If your car has a specific issue, describe it and I’ll explain the simplest way to trace the cause. |

If you don't have the DIY tools , how do you intend to fix it yourself ? |

You raise an excellent and practical point. The difference lies in the word DIAGNOSE. If a driver doesn't have the DIY tools, they still have the most powerful tool of all: knowledge. 1. The Goal is Control, Not Just Fixing: The original post helps the driver figure out what is wrong so they can make an informed decision, even if they can't turn the wrench themselves. In short, knowing what is wrong is the first step of the fix. 2. Having an Edge Over the Uninformed Drivers: This knowledge immediately gives you an edge over 90% of other everyday drivers who are completely unaware of their car's actual ailment. Uninformed Driver's Approach: My AC is blowing hot. I'll take it to a mechanic and see what they say which opens the door to an expensive, generalized diagnosis Your Approach (The Edge): My AC is blowing hot, and based on my checks, the compressor clutch isn't engaging, or the cabin filter is clogged. (You present a specific problem, forcing the mechanic to confirm a targeted, low-cost solution, rather than searching blindly.) 3. Preventing Trial and Error: This is your greatest defense. The goal of DIY diagnosis is to prevent you from being overcharged, misled, or, critically, subjected to the frustrating and expensive trial-and-error approach of an uninformed mechanic, a common practice in our environment. By diagnosing the problem, you give the mechanic a precise task rather than an open-ended invitation to guess. This saves you budget, time, and ensures a higher quality of targeted service, even if someone else performs the physical labor. |

Sure.chat gpt tod me battery lifespan of naija new battwries doesnt exceed 2years.anf mine is 2years 7months.despite having a portable charger The battery gets weak after 3 cranks. This was the same battery i usually left in my car for weeks when i travelled in 2023 and 2024.fast forward to 2025 april,it started dying gradualy, getting below 13 volts and my car needs 100 ah,the one i got then was 70ah. Infact naija is just another cursed country.all the batteries are all the same. With kust a sticker and stamped serial number. They are all fake and dont exceed a year or two.tho i know i enjoyed the battery but it expired too quick. Im trying to sell it as scrap to a scrap battery dealer and he dey hiss for my price of 40k.he dey price am 15k.for battery wey i buy 45k for 2023... Carmadesimpe: |

Make Una help me o, my car actually compressor dey do on and off, I see am for engine bay say when I dey feel cool air inside car d compressor dey spin, when e no spin ma ordinary air go dey inside car. What is causing my compressor to randomly shut off and restart itself at intervals? |

Akinfrank:The symptoms could either be any of these and strongly suggest an issue with system pressure. Low Refrigerant (Primary Suspect): The system likely has a leak and is severely undercharged. The low-pressure safety switch is engaging, causing the compressor to rapidly cycle on and off (short-cycling) to protect itself, resulting in poor cooling and intermittent bursts of air. Faulty Switch/Clutch (Secondary Suspect): Even if the refrigerant is correct, a malfunctioning low-pressure switch or a failure in the compressor's internal thermal protection/clutch mechanism could be incorrectly signaling the compressor to shut down and restart, causing the random cycling. Diagnosis requires checking the system for leaks and measuring the high and low-side pressures. The most crucial step is to have a mechanic measure the system pressures (both high-side and low-side) while the system is attempting to run. This will immediately confirm if the system is low on refrigerant (which is highly probable) or if there is an issue with the pressure switches or a serious internal blockage. Tell the mechanic: My AC compressor is randomly shutting off and restarting at intervals (short-cycling), which prevents continuous cooling. 1. Please test both the high-side and low-side pressures while the car is running to confirm if it is low on refrigerant or if it is over-pressurizing. 2. If the pressures are low, find and repair the leak before recharging. 3. If the pressures are normal, please test the pressure switches and inspect the compressor clutch for signs of slipping or overheating. This's focused on solving the intermittent cycling, as that is the root of the problem. |
