Opposition Leaders Raise Alarm Over Threat Nigeria’s Multi-Party Democracy by Bobloco(op): 9:41pm On Dec 14, 2025
Prominent opposition leaders have raised the alarm over what they described as a deliberate attempt by the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to undermine Nigeria’s multi-party democracy through the politicisation of anti-corruption agencies.

In a joint statement issued on Sunday, the leaders accused the Federal Government of weaponising institutions such as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, the Nigeria Police and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, ICPC, to intimidate and persecute political opponents under the guise of fighting corruption.

The statement was signed by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar; former Senate President and African Democratic Congress, ADC, National Chairman, Senator David Mark; Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi; former Edo State Governor, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun; former PDP Deputy National Chairman (South), Chief Olabode George; and former Minister of State for Defence, Mallam Lawal Batagarawa.

They warned that Nigeria was drifting towards a one-party state, alleging that opposition governors and political leaders were being pressured by anti-graft agencies to defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.

“State power is being deployed not for the genuine fight against corruption, but for the systematic persecution of perceived political opponents ahead of the 2027 general election,” the statement said.

The opposition figures accused the EFCC of selective enforcement, claiming that while opposition figures face aggressive investigations and media trials, allegations against members of the ruling party are ignored or quietly dropped.

They cited public perceptions of unequal justice, including past remarks credited to a former APC national chairman that defectors’ “sins are forgiven,” arguing that such narratives have weakened trust in anti-corruption institutions.

As part of their demands, the leaders called for an independent review of federal, state and local government accounts from 2015 to 2025 to expose selective prosecution and restore confidence in the anti-graft war.

They also proposed embedding anti-corruption operatives directly into government payment systems to prevent financial crimes, alongside amendments to the EFCC Act to strengthen its independence and preventive mandate.

The leaders urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and defend the country’s democratic space, warning that political injustice, if unchecked, could threaten national stability.

Each geopolitical zone well represented. I love the unity. Atiku and Obi must continue working together to remove this insensitive and inhuman Yoruba government from power.

This is just a case of the opposition crying wolf. They are the ones that should be worried about their dwindling fortunes. If they have nothing to hide, why are they scared of EFCC?
Re: Opposition Leaders Raise Alarm Over Threat Nigeria’s Multi-Party Democracy by emkz: 5:06am On Dec 15, 2025
Opposition have already admitted defeat. They have failed to arrest the retrogression of their parties. Has Peter Obi set up any reconciliation committee in LP? Has Atiku and his gang set up such in ADC? Instead, they are fighting and dictating to those they met at the party.

Has ADC carried out any sensitization at ward level? Has Peter Obi done outreach to fix the lapses in the last election?

From the resignation of a former director of the Obidient Movement, it is clear that Peter Obi is detached from party activities and focuses on his own brand. Sadly, we do not have independent candidates in our politics. No matter how strong a politician is, he'd lose under a weak or dysfunctional party.

The opposition are the ones opposing themselves by not fixing their parties.

1. Opposition politicans too need to unite and also be bold enough to fight together

2. Politicans also need to stop this mentality that they need to be on the winning team. Same issue under pdp, same issue today

I don’t think using EFCC to prosecute the opponents is even the main problem. Of course if they are guilty, they should be convicted
The main thing that I’m so sad about is how this government is systematically sponsoring disunity in almost all major parties. Go and check them all out
This is a major threat to the democracy we are managing in Nigeria
Re: Opposition Leaders Raise Alarm Over Threat Nigeria’s Multi-Party Democracy by emkz: 5:12am On Dec 15, 2025
As for weaponizing EFCC, are they saying that politicians who have questions to answer should not answer because of their membership of the opposition?

The one currently in detention, was he not already answering questions on his activities as minister concerning Abacha loot while he was in the APC?

Opposition parties should come clean and tell us whether they are against returning loots by those who were in government or for them to return the loots.

This group clearly lacks the seriousness and competence expected of an opposition party. Their actions and decisions do not reflect the responsibility or capability required to hold that role effectively.

Multi-party democracy is the fundamental issue that must be resolved by we the opposition parties. Not by the ruling party. We have to identify the main problems and tackle them the same way we did during the military.

The opposition should just send a high powered delegation to Washington. Present their case with the US congressional caucus on international affairs and democracy. Once Dnald Trump hears about it, both Tinubu, EFCC and co will tuck their tails in their bum-bum and run into hiding.

In a country that practices FREE AND FAIR election, one party system won't even save the running candidate if he/isn't the masses choice.

90% of Nigerian don't want Chicago, but that won't stop him from winning because we're in a country whereby anything goes.

I just think most of the governors, if not all, are lazy people who can't think for themselves.

And I still can't understand this thier excuse of aligning the state with the center as their excuse for defection.

Because I don't think governors in the opposition don't get federal allocations.

Can someone please enlighten me on y almost all the governors make that statement as a justification for their defection to the ruling party?

The opposition are crying more than the bereaved.

Where were they when the opposition from hell were subjected to all sorts of persecution and intimidation during the electioneering campaign?

In Nigeria, the ruling party always try to silence other parties.
People got tired of PDP and thought APC would do better.
We all now know that it doesn't matter who is ruling Nigeria, whatever will be will be.

Oga i dont believe Tinubu is unstoppable, Lets stop self - defeat within Us, all that it take is for opposition to Unite just like we saw forces unite in 2015 to remove jonathan

why is it so difficult of opposition to look back nd reason, Tinubu, saraki, atiku all had ambition wanting to be president But they stalled For Buhari cos thats the only way to win then

Now considering zoning and tenure ... the only candidate that can displace Tinubu is just jonathan, GEJ aggrieved supporters are stil on ground, SS/SE automatically goes to him and even America will support GEj over a drug baron .. IF opposition can just unite

How will Apc campaign against Jonathan, with all that we have seen under Apc

What's the threat? Is it by force to be opposition and be in government? There are still many people in opposition. That govs and Senators choose to be in ruling party because the opposition has turned itself into a mockery and desperate politicians who criticizes blindly is not anyone's fault. If being united in one part will push the country forward... So be it
