Cessna 172 Aircraft Crashes At Owerri Airport by seunlayi(op): 5:20am On Dec 17, 2025
A Cessna 172 aircraft operated by Skypower Express crashed, Tuesday evening, at Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport, Owerri, Imo State, prompting an immediate response from airport emergency services.
The aircraft, with nationality and registration marks 5N-ASR, was originally en route from Kaduna International Airport to Port Harcourt International Airport when the crew declared an emergency, forcing a diversion to Owerri.
The aircraft crashed in the approach area of Runway 17 around 8 p.m. local time. Four people were on board, and no fatalities have been reported so far.

According to the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau, NSIB, there was no post-crash fire, and flight operations at the airport continued safely, with other aircraft taking off after the incident.

A statement by Mrs Bimbo Olawumi Oladeji, Director of Public Affairs and Family Assistance, NSIB, said: “Efforts are ongoing to recover the distressed aircraft from the crash site for a detailed wreckage examination.”

The NSIB noted that it had activated its protocols in line with its mandate. Director-General Captain Alex Badeh Jr. expressed sympathy to Skypower Express while welcoming the absence of casualties.

“We express our deepest sympathies to the management of Skypower Express and are glad that no fatalities have been reported so far. Our team is coordinating with authorities to secure the site,” he said.

If there are no casualties, thank God. Why fly that tookeh tookeh rubbish at night? Some people like taking risks. When I saw 5N in the serial number, I assumed it was a Dash 8. Thank God I was proven wrong.

Ahhhhh what has been happening lately in the aviation industry, 3 crashes in less than a month (albeit no casualties) but this trend is not good

Imagine managing an old and damaged aircraft. It's a Nigerian thing, we do it to our cars also.

5N indicates the plane was registered in Nigeria. It's our registration prefix as issued by ICAO (the international civil aviation organisation).

Other examples by country

N indicates the plane was registered in the USA.
G- United Kingdom
ZS, ZT, and ZU...South Africa
XA, XB , XC : Mexico.

Lucky for them it was a twin prop aircraft, something that could coast and glide with a low power to weight ratio which makes most crashes get very little fatalities unlike your regular jet that would result into a mushroom cloud of explosion...
Re: Cessna 172 Aircraft Crashes At Owerri Airport by Denalarian: 6:08am On Dec 17, 2025
What an experienced pilot, kudos to the crew members as well..

We have enthusiast in this country that can make things work, but the political class cares less. Akpabio has been flown for collapsing, Tanko died in Saudi but we have doctors that got their education from abroad but can't be established in nigeria. Japa before them you count score

They do crash and explode as well.. its a human that controls the glide to safety. If he's inexperienced.. omo anything can cause death and definitely anything airborne

2 or 3 near air mishaps over the past 2 weeks is not good.

Keyamo who has been doing relatively well as minister should be watchful and keep the regulators on their toes.

and I used to be very wary of propeller planes like the ones Green Africa uses.

I was of the belief that jet engines are better/safer than propeller engine aircrafts, but your comment caught my attention as a mech engineer.

Airpeace should please understudy Qatar Airways operation and safety procedures, the only international airline in the world that have never recorded a single air crash since 32 years of operation

Nawahoo this one wey na Private Jets or Charter dey crash or try crash these days after all the money for charter. God abegoo.

Logically in Nigeria PJs are likely prone to being under maintained as compared to the commercial jets counterpart due to patronage, safety and business sustainability.

I thought Nigeria had passed this stage.

Thank God that nobody died.

It means the aircraft only crash-landed.

The headline clearly told you it was a cesnna, what does 5N have to do with a dash 8? All Nigerian registered aircraft from helicopters to Cessna to presidential jets are 5N….so what’s the logic?
