Good evening, everyone. Please, has anyone experienced this before? I joined this company earlier this year and I am spending a year with them already. Immediately I joined, I was given offer letter and other documents to sign which I did sign them immediately and send back to them. Last week, I got a mail from the HR to sign an updated JD which I signed and returned. Again this week, I got another mail from the HR to come to their office to pick offer letter. Offer letter after a year of work! I am thinking something might be fishing. Please house, has anyone experienced this before because this is my first time of coming across this in about 10 years I have been working. Your contribution and guidance will be much appreciated.

WebLab:Maybe they are retyping it to reflect the terms and conditions in the updated job description you've already signed. Or maybe it's a promotion letter. Either way you'll still be required to sign that you've received this new offer letter, so make sure you read it carefully before accepting it, so that you don't fall into any traps. |

You got a new JD that you signed without hassle. Now you are getting a new offer letter that compliments it and that becomes a problem. Anyways, try to read through the terms and conditions to ensure that you are not signing something that could hinder you in future. Can as well compare the two letters to find any line item that was added or taken out of each letter. Adios |

The company could be an early-stage business (less than 10 years after registration) that's in its experimental phase. So, the management is probably reassigning job descriptions or increasing workers' responsibilities instead of hiring more people as a way of cutting costs. |

Was there a salary increase? Did they add marketing duties? Was your long term benefits or salary reduced? Did they add more work for you or promoted you? |

thesicilian:Thanks very much for your reply. I have just been wondering of the intention behind this. Will they be starting my employment date affresh or restart another probation period or change salary? Different questions just running through my head. As you have advised, I will surely go through it very well before signing. Thanks. |

Trojan8:The new JD didn't contradict my work in anyway, it's within the confinement of my day-to-day activities in the company. The role stays the same, only the reporting line changed. That's why I signed because any company can restructure reporting line at any time |

Yankee101:I have not collected it yet. Another thing that raised concern is the fact they didn't send the new offer letter via mail as they did while sending the JD. They requested I come to the HR to pick it up. |

WebLab:Your employment date will remain the same date you first started, and is highly likely that you'll be required to go through another probation period (that only happens when the company is no longer sure of your competence or maybe you've done something wrong.) But a change in salary is possible. |

WebLab:You’re supposed to SEE and READ an offer before accepting it and appending your signature |

WebLab:Then you pick it up and see what it entails before worrying yourself. |

It's normal...technically still on probation for the first year. Ask them to clarify. |

The cause mainly happens around poor HR management, i think there's a serious dearth of experienced HR personnel in Nigeria right now, most of the one we have now are highly inexperienced. |

WebLab:Next time, get a lawyer to review before you put pen to paper. You’ve already signed the “updated JD” so you either collect the “new” offer letter or you quit. You can’t be smart by half. It might even be your confirmation letter and you’d be fretting over nothing. You should have a lawyer friend for stuff like these.

This can happen if the company had been sold to another business.. May be associated with restructuring the business and realignment of roles and cadres. |

We’re seeing it live and direct that employed people do not visit this forum. It is because they are busy with work. The jambites, illiterates and Yahoo boys here have never worked a day in their lives, hence can’t give proper advice. Some companies renew contracts every year. I heard it is so anyone willing to resign can. I don’t know the mechanics behind the protocol, but workplaces which practice it base their operations on temporary contracts — mostly government or multinational-centric. Once the contract ends, employees are free to leave without hassle. |

You have all cards on your table. Did you receive a confirmation letter after your probation period? It could be: - a confirmation letter - a promotion letter - it could be a job/role change letter (with added responsibilities) - it could be a salary review letter. - it could be a redundancy letter ( if the company still has the right to sack you, after one year). - it could be a redeployment letter ( transfer letter). Worry less, man. Not receiving any query letter before doesn’t mean one can’t be sacked. |

Yes, this does happen, but it’s not very common—and you’re right to be cautious. Your instincts are valid. In many Nigerian companies, this happens due to poor HR structure, not necessarily bad intent. However, it’s also a known tactic in some places to reset employee rights. So: - Stay calm - Be professional - Be alert You’re doing the right thing by asking questions. |

Maybe you are getting a confirmation letter. Some companies hire people on a temporary basis usually 6 months to guage competence. After which they give you a letter of confirmation to hire you as a full staff member. |

Before you are a contract staff. Now you are a parmanent staff. That's the different, my opinion though. |

Check the dates on the letter before you sign. If the date is wrong, snap it as evidence and tell them to get back to you when it's corrected. . Open your eyes |
