FCTA Officials Demolish River Park Estate Despite Restraining Order by kidap(op): 1:08pm On Dec 17, 2025
ABUJA, NIGERIA — Reports have emerged of ongoing demolitions at the River Park Estate in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), allegedly carried out in direct violation of a subsisting court order.

The Incident

According to statements from the scene, officials from the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) forcefully breached the estate’s perimeter fence to begin demolition activities. The operation was reportedly met with resistance from residents, leading to a violent confrontation.
Homeowners claim they were assaulted, beaten, and subjected to tear gas by officials during the exercise.

Legal and Constitutional Concerns

The core of the controversy lies in a reported restraining order issued by a court of law, which explicitly forbids the Honourable Minister of the FCT and his agents from carrying out any demolition or interference with the property.
Critics and residents are raising "grave constitutional questions" regarding the actions of the FCDA, suggesting that:
* The actions represent a blatant disregard for the rule of law.
* The demolition may be driven by personal or external interests rather than due process.
* The Minister’s office appears to be acting as if it is above the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Public Outcry

The situation has sparked a heated debate regarding the protection of Nigerian citizens and their legally acquired properties. Stakeholders are calling for an immediate halt to the exercise, emphasizing that the Rule of Law must prevail and that no individual, regardless of their office, should be exempt from judicial oversight.

As of the time of this report, the FCT Ministry has not released an official statement regarding the alleged violation of the court order or the reports of violence against homeowners.

What court order?
Does Nigeria have courts?
Does anyone take them serious?

This is what happens when members of the judiciary are constantly in bed with the executive. How will "see finish" not enter it?

The extent of the power of the Nigerian court rulings is only to the extent where the executive is willing to apply it.

There's no record of court order in the report. Is it that the court order cannot be disclosed?

The estate excos may be deceiving them. No court will give a restraining order to prevent the bringing down of a structure that pose danger to lives.

Why would FCTA try to do this to Citizens who acquired land legitimately for years now. If something was wrong with the developer why not take over the estate facilities and others if they can't pay off the penalties.

How come Wike chose to demolish in his regime that others before him didn't see fit to undertake out of sympathy for unaware citizens.

The estate is now literally owned by homeowner s if they new there was irregularities before investing, nobody will want to risk it. So don't punish a child for his father's sins. Wike can do better.

What respect is left for the judiciary in Nigeria when we see even the govt disobeying Court orders....

It is well.

I don't understand; is it the whole estate the authority wants to destroy? because the estate is huge. That would be heartless and wicked, considering the times we are in..

If you have resided in Abuja before, you won't type this comment.

Abuja is leagues ahead of Port Harcourt when it comes to having influencial people.

Moreover, there has been an unending legal battle regarding the ownership of River Park Estate.

Wike needs to learn from how Lagos carry out it's demolitions. Using brute force all the time doesn't show. class. Fashola demolished some houses but used sense in doing it. Wike needs to deploy some PR strategies in doing his work. We know people are wrong but carry the larger society along in your activities. Seriously, a minister should stop behaving like a thug otherwise Tinubu might get tired. All these bolekaja attitude should stop. Tinubu and all his proteges are more strategic and achieve their goals. Fashola, Ambode, Sanwo Oluchi used diplomacy to gradually impact Lagos without making noise. Before demolition why can't govt go to TV stations to educate Abuja citizens ahead of time and win the PR war.
