Fuel prices and maintenance costs are already high, but many drivers make a mistake that silently damages their engines. Skipping regular oil changes is the main cause of engine problems in Nigeria.

Engine oil lubricates moving parts, reduces friction, and keeps the engine cool. When oil is old or low, parts grind against each other, causing heat, wear, and reduced efficiency. This leads to higher fuel consumption and poor performance. If left unchecked, engine failure can cost hundreds of thousands of Naira to repair.

Some drivers wait until the engine makes strange noises or overheats before checking oil. Others use the wrong type of oil or extend the interval between oil changes beyond the manufacturer’s recommendation. All of these habits shorten engine life.

The solution is simple. Check your oil at least once a month and change it according to the schedule in your car manual. Use the recommended oil type and quality.

Drivers who follow this habit save fuel, avoid costly repairs, and keep their cars running smoothly on Nigerian roads. How often do you check your engine oil? Has it affected your car’s performance or fuel usage?

The first start of the day, always allows the RMP to drop to 1 or a bit lower than 1..... that's allow the car to warm up before driving.

Sincere question here - do you think modern engines still need the warm up?
I thought that was an issue with older cars

Dumping any engine oil inside the engine!

They will buy anything that KAZEEM recommends, and to top it up, they just buy from any where without concern. Some think they buying Mobil 1 but don’t even know they are buying oil blended in Aba.

Another one is using water for coolant 🤣🤣🤣

Normal now...
This should be the Basics of car usage knowledge, but trust me; many car owners in Nigeria don't check their oils especially the ladies.

Women own na to use and dump anytime the car develops fault...even if it's on the highway; they'll call their husband, bf, or brother to come and carry the faulty car.

same here many youths are destroying their engines (the heart which is the most vital organ) by consuming all sorts of mixtures and concoctions all in the name of feeling high or been a hard guy.

Re: How Nigerian Drivers Destroy Their Car Engines Without Knowing It by omoot: 1:06pm On Dec 22, 2025
This is 100% correct.
Once the oil quality is checked regularly and replaced as specified by the manufacturer, the reliability of the engine performance is👌.

Guess it isn't my thing and my guess is he was either not observant enough to notice the check engine light or just decided to ignore it.

- USE THE SPECIFIED OIL WEIGHT BY THE MANUFACTURER.
- SYNTHETIC OIL REMAINS YOUR BEAT BET. YOU CAR WILL THANK YOU FOR IT.
- ALWAYS USE COOLANT INSTEAD OF WATER.
- CHANGE YOUR ENGINE AIR FILTER AND CABIN FILTER FROM TIME TO TIME.

Driving cars produced from 1990 to present day does not need to be warmed before driving.

Reason is thus:
1. Fuel, synthetic oil and faster acting components eliminate the need to idle. U can read it up yourself.

My car Manuel explained all this to me and that is why my CRV of 10years has been fantastic till date.

U can read it up online for better clarity. But I have known this for long sha.

Btruth:

Most proper mechanics will require the thermostat installed back in the car or they wount touch it.
Once the thermostat is removed and the fan is made parmanent, it means the car does not get to the manufacturers set temperature for optimal performance. Eg the manufacturer says your engine should be ran at 37c, you are then running it at 20c, thermostat that should be closed to stop flow of water to inclease temperature and open to reduce is removed, so the vehicle cannot regulate its self. Omo, engine will fail well before time.
Infact when one mechanic removed my thermostat it brought out check engine warning, I scanned an caught him, had to give him money to go buy another and install in my presence.
Never remove thermostat or make your fans run permanent.
