What is special about the so called tax reform? Will it increase tax to GDP ratio so the government will have money for universal healthcare? |

PRESS STATEMENT BY THE SUPREME COUNCIL FOR SHARI’AH IN NIGERIA (SCSN) ON ALLEGED DISCREPANCIES IN THE GAZETTED TAX REFORM BILLS The Supreme Council for Shari’ah in Nigeria (SCSN) has followed with deep concern developments on the floor of the National Assembly yesterday, where Hon. Abdulsamad Dasuki, a duly elected member of the House of Representatives, raised an alarm over disturbing discrepancies between the tax reform bills passed by the National Assembly and the versions subsequently gazetted and presented to the Nigerian public. The Council notes with utmost seriousness the allegation that additional clauses and other substantial material alterations appearing in the gazetted tax laws signed by the President were neither debated nor approved by the National Assembly. If established, this represents a grave and egregious constitutional infraction with far-reaching implications for democracy, governance, economic stability, and public trust. Given the profound impact of tax legislation on the lives, livelihoods of ordinary citizens, businesses, and religious, social, and economic obligations of Nigerians, the Supreme Council for Shari’ah in Nigeria actively monitored and contributed immensely throughout the legislative process of considering these tax reform bills at the National Assembly. Our engagements were guided by the need to ensure fairness, equity, transparency, constitutional compliance, and protection of the public interest. The Council is therefore shocked and deeply disturbed by allegations on the floor of the House of Representatives that what Nigerians collectively debated, scrutinised, and agreed upon through their elected representatives may have been altered at the executive level. Such action, if established ,tantamounts to tampering with the sovereign will of the Nigerian people and undermines the very foundation of constitutional governance. Accordingly, we hereby call on all stakeholders, in particular, the leadership of the National Assembly - the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Tajuddeen Abbas, and the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio to rise to their constitutional responsibilities by ensuring that these claims are transparently examined and appropriate actions taken before the commencement of the Tax Laws, on the 1st of January, 2026. Nigerians deserve respect, transparency, and fidelity to due process. Members of the National Assembly must be allowed, without hindrance, to conduct a critical, open, and transparent comparison between the harmonised bills passed by both chambers and the versions that were eventually gazetted, in order to establish the nature, extent, and impact of any alterations. The consequences of such alleged infractions are grave. They include erosion of public confidence in democratic institutions, weakening of the doctrine of separation of powers, exposure of the affected laws to constitutional challenges, economic uncertainty, and loss of investor confidence. Most critically, they set a dangerous precedent where laws become negotiable instruments rather than binding outcomes of democratic deliberation. Tax laws, by their compulsory nature, demand the highest level of constitutional integrity and procedural fidelity. Nigerians cannot be expected to comply with fiscal obligations arising from laws whose authenticity and legislative origin are in doubt. The Council therefore urges that this matter be treated with urgency, sincerity, and transparency in order to preserve constitutional order, protect institutional credibility, and reaffirm the supremacy of the Nigerian Constitution. Nigeria’s democracy must not be undermined by executive overreach or procedural shortcuts. The will of the people, as expressed through the National Assembly, must be respected and defended. Signed: Nafiu Baba-Ahmad, mni Secretary General Supreme Council for Shari’ah in Nigeria (SCSN) 27 Jumada II 1447 AH/ 17 December 2025 https://x.com/i/status/2001907716651094024 |

Nigerians raise alarm over FG's plan to frustrate Nigerians. Onye ara. What exactly are Nigerians benefiting from the government? Roads - NO Electricity - ZERO Security - NIL Water - FOR WHERE? But when it comes to squandering public funds, tinubu is a master at that. He can renovate the VP's residence with 21b. Earmark billions for imaginary solar installation in Aso rock. Claim to have rekindled a dead refinery. Everything about BAT and his cronies smell of lies, fraud, and unfettered wickedness.

Proudlyngwa:Why I am against federal Government tax rubbish. I believe tax is an obligation for everyone irrespective of your social status, returns or relief, it is everybody's responsibility to contribute to nation building, security, primary education and future substanability. I don't see why I should contribute from my sweat and some people wii be exempt because it is believed they are not making up to a certain amount, we all make use of the same roads, infrastructure and security architecture, so why should they not input their own quota to development and hold the administrators accountable. Next , what sort of bullshit is progressive taxing, tax is meant to be a percentage of your income to the government, what rubbish is progressive taxing Then nobody has talked about the never ending issue of multiple taxing. Why should I go to a super market by an item, and pay vat on it, the workers who made that produtucts where taxed, the mart is meant to be taxed on its profit. Why the helllll am I supposed to pay 7.5% on something I want to consume when other people who worked for it have been taxed and those who sold it have been taxed on their profit. We have levies, we have rates, we have tax, vat, w.hold tax, bribe, thank you and even thank you for coming. Tax should be by locality and speciality. Federal government can have a unified platform for collection but we are supposed to know what percentage of a person's tax goes to the unit, ward, local government, state government and then federal government. I cannot be in porthacourt with its quarter to madness attitude and be sponsoring mass wedding in zamfara, homosexuality in ..A ..U...A and 5 million dollar school fees in sokotozerland. This madness needs to be readdressed |

There should be no tax reforms until there's a clear and result-oriented fight against corruption. There can't be fantastic corruption in the country without a serious fight against it and you are talking about tax reforms. |

Inasmuch as the new tax laws and reforms may not be bad, we need more of economic prosperity, increase our earnings and our purchasing power, give naira more value, support local industries, make good stable policies that will attract investors and create jobs, provide good sustainable basic amenities; then come up with all these tax laws and reforms. You don't tax our poverty, you tax our riches! |

FG should come out clean The tax bill is an attempt to frustrated an already frustrated Nigerians If the FG has pure intention, they need to STOP THE PERSONAL INCOME TAX WITH IMMEDIATE EFFECT! Let Manufacturing companies, importers, refineries, recycling companies, & other big companies be taxed. Everybody needs these manufacturing companies afterall nobody escape buying sachet or bottle water. If only these people tax, it will be single digit. The present format will end up eating up people's meagre income with tax. Tell me why I should pay tax on personal income and when I shop in the supermarket, I still pay another tax. When I make calls buying recharge cards from already taxed income, government still taxed me The whole tax structure is a complete mess that needs to be cleaned up asap. Nigerians dont earn enough to be taxed! If importers pay tax, it will be spread on the selling price Manufacturers already add the tax to the selling price of their products |

Tinubu suspend the devilish tax law. Nigerians are suffering and struggling to survive, tax enforcement cannot help Nigeria it will rather worsen and complicate Nigeria's economy. The new tax law will only slow the growth and recovery of businesses and companies and further cause more unemployment and hardship, it will also discourage more investors and also sabotage cashless policy. You removed subsidy and nothing to show for it afte so much noise and promises of heaven on earth You removed subsidy on tertiary education tuition fee. You removed subsidy on electricity tariff and nothing to show for it. You have borrowed close to a trillion dollars with nothing to show for it. You and your predecessors couldn't account for the trillions Nigeria earn from crude oil sales for decades now. Is it tax revenue that FIRS staffs usually steal through various means and then government officials loot the remaining that you will account for after collection? We have plenty precious solid minerals in the North, think of how to harness it and you will generate trillions from it to foot your 2027 Presidential reelection rigging plans ![]() Allow Nigerians breath na. Nigeria is not yet ripe for this crippling tax law. Go and ask why former Presidents abolished the old British tax law that made tax taskforce chase Nigerians around in the markets, villages, on the road, etc. It will not yield positive result in Nigeria now, focus on recovery and improving security first. This can come in 6 years from now when Nigeria has recovered from the woods where Tinubu and APC pushed Nigerians into |

Tax reforms in a nation where the monthly minimum wage is $50 USD. Even the people earning the minimum wage are subjected to 15% tax, despite rising cost of utilities like electricity, so how is that "pro-poor"? Someone earning 30k in 2019 is better off than someone earning 70k in 2025... The last election and dollar sharing really killed the Naira and APC agents are to blame 100% from Buhari to Emefiele to Tinubu... They killed the Naira. |

Proudlyngwa:Tax is an obligation indeed, and no sane mind should go against tax, but the level of clarity in the new tax law is poor, many points were shrouded in unclear personal interpretations. Also, accountability in previously paid taxes is making Nigerians think they're wasting money by paying tax. What do we have to show for all the income generated in this country? Whether via taxes, borrowing, sales of crude or other earnings?? |

Lmao! See them calling 'misinformation' when their own House of Reps members are shouting that the version of the bill passed by NASS is different from the one they 'magically' gazetted in Abuja. How can there be public trust when you people are playing 'now you see it, now you don't' with the law? You signed the bills in June, but by December, the gazette is showing something else. Is it the 'unnamed individuals' that swapped the documents in the Ministry of Information too? You want to 'rebalance' the tax system, but the only thing being rebalanced is the money moving from our empty pockets into your new fleet of SUVs. If Nigerians are confused, it’s because this government is a masterclass in chaos. Free us abeg! |
