1978 – Conceptual Idea
• The idea to connect Bonny Island to the mainland by road was first conceived during the military administration in Rivers State.

2002 – Early Attempt
• An initial effort produced only limited bridge work and stalled without meaningful progress.

2014 – Formal Contract Award
• The Federal Government awarded the Bodo–Bonny Road contract to Julius Berger Nigeria Plc.

2017 – Project Revival & Construction Begins
• A tripartite funding arrangement involving the Federal Government, Nigeria LNG (NLNG), and Julius Berger was signed.
• Full construction commenced, including major bridges across creeks and swampy terrain.

2019–2021 – Delays and Cost Review
• Engineering complexity, funding gaps, inflation, and design changes caused delays.
• Project cost was reviewed upward.

2022 – Community-Related Interruptions
• Local grievances over engagement and naming issues briefly disrupted construction.

2023 – Inflation & FX Crisis
• Severe inflation and foreign exchange pressures slowed work and triggered renegotiations.

2024 – Funding Approval & Restart
• Federal Executive Council approved a significant cost increase.
• Construction resumed at full pace.

December 2025 – Temporary Opening
• The road was officially opened to light vehicles only, marking a historic breakthrough after decades of isolation.

2026 (Target) – Full Completion
• Final works and unrestricted access (including heavy trucks) expected upon completion.
Does the means no more boat from pH to bonny? I spent an hour many years ago when I made that trip. The return leg would have been frightening if not for my quick thinking

Haven’t you guys noticed that Tinubu name is always mentioned in any project being commissioned… must everything be politicized?
John Creek should be mentioned instead.

Are you satisfied now

Alot . Bonny Island don't have any link road to other part of Nigeria before now. The first road to cross the sea. People will no longer use boat only to the mainland Bodo...and many others benefits

This is a no mean feat for those familiar with the terrain.

Travelling by boat from Creek Road, Port Harcourt, to Bonny for a first-timer, is like embarking on a suicide mission.

The creeks are like a maze and the waves are as high as Mount Olympus.

The first time I travelled by boat to the beautiful Island of Bonny, my heart was literally in my mouth.

I had to hold on firmly to the wooden seat as though my life depended on it.

It was the most frightening journeys I've ever embarked on.

That one can now get to Bonny Island by land is a most commendable achievement by the FGN.

H.E Engr.David Umahi has really proven his mettle as an engineer, not just in words but in deeds.

God bless Tinubu!
God bless Umahi!
God bless Fubara!
God bless Rivers State!
God bless the FRN!

but Fashola deserves no credit
My brother, we are just witness how these guys are usurping credits. Fashola and Buhari deserve the major credit for this project. The Tinubu admin didn't do up to 20% of the work. The NLNG too provided half of the funds. Let the credit go round

Hate him or hate him Bola Tinubu as delivered twice as many KM as any president who spent 4 year in just 2 years.

The fact some hate filled fools lunatics label him a failure does not blind those of us with functional brains. We can see how many road he completed n commissioned with Umahi already.
Successful people don't rant like you just did. I can bet my life you are one struggling guy who possibly have no hope of what to eat tonight.

President Bola Tinubu on Monday temporarily opened the 37.9-kilometre Bodo–Bonny Road in Rivers State, warning that night travel and heavy-duty vehicles remain banned until the project is fully completed in the first quarter of 2026.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TUvVqN9x_pY?si=-OZpo8Ik0CYqi4ze
Speaking through the Minister of Works, David Umahi, at a ceremony on the Bodo-Bonny road, the President described the road as a flagship achievement of his Renewed Hope Agenda, saying it ends decades of reliance on difficult and sometimes risky river journeys into Bonny Island.

Tinubu stated, “The dream of the Bonny Kingdom has come true; the dream of the Bodo Kingdom has come true.

“No more risky journeys through the busy Bonny River, no more expensive helicopters, no more untold hardships to reach this blessed island.

For now, the road is open only for light vehicles from 7 am to 7 pm daily. Heavy-duty trucks, motorcycles and tricycles are barred until completion, targeted for March 2026.”

Tinubu commended the contractor, Julius Berger Nigeria Plc, singling out the project manager, Tim Nippert, for pushing the work to its current stage.

The reason they timed the statement from GEJ kinsmen to tally with commisioning is not hard to see.
These are the sort of roads he should have done for more states instead of one long coastal road attempting to run parallel the full coast line.
Johnathan didn't construct a coastal road, how many federal road did he rehabilitate in the 36 states?

*_IF YOU TRULY UNDERSTAND NIGERIA, YOU WILL CALM DOWN AND WATCH HOW YOU MOVE._*

Let me be brutally realistic for those who want to understand the kind of country we live in.

One of the major reasons Mazi Nnamdi Kanu ended up where he is today is because he misread the nature of Nigeria.
Many young people cheering him on also misunderstood the kind of structure they were confronting.

NIGERIA IS LIKE A WHALE

A whale is a massive creature living under water.
Slow… calm... gentle-looking.

But anytime it opens its mouth, it can swallow anything — no matter the size — without shaking.

That is Nigeria.

You can provoke it.
You can insult it.
You can challenge it.
You can shout.
You can trend online.

But once that “mouth” opens, whatever enters is swallowed.
No noise.
No drama.
No consequence.

That is the Nigerian state.

KANU UNDERESTIMATED THE COUNTRY

He started with intellectual debates that were gaining attention:

restructuring

marginalization

federal imbalance

historical injustices

These conversations were becoming mainstream.

But suddenly, his approach changed.
Statements became harsher.
Broadcasts became more extreme.
He made declarations that were too open, too recorded, too documented.
He gave instructions that were easy to trace and easy to quote.

That was an error.

Even the worst extremist groups in the world do not make direct, traceable statements online — they understand the consequences.

THE “NO ONE CAN TOUCH HIM” NARRATIVE BACKFIRED

Many IPOB supporters overestimated what a British passport or foreign residency could do.

They forgot:

The same Buhari who arrested Kanu had once attempted to kidnap Umaru Dikko in London in the 1980s.
Buhari had a history of targeting people abroad and bringing them back.

When Kanu was taken, the UK did not fight Nigeria.
Reality became clear.

Again, many said:

“If Kanu is touched, the heavens will fall.”

But today, after a life sentence was pronounced,
Nigeria is calm.
No explosion.
No shaking.
No international intervention.

That is how the whale operates.

NIGERIA HAS SWALLOWED MUCH BIGGER PEOPLE

People far more influential than Kanu have gone down:

Ken Saro-Wiwa and the Ogoni Nine — executed.
Nothing happened.

M.K.O. Abiola, the most popular man in Nigeria at the time — arrested, died in custody.
Nothing happened.

Bola Ige was murdered — heavens did not fall.

Obasanjo, a former military head of state — jailed.
He survived by divine providence, not by national outrage.

Even as president, Obasanjo could not secure a third term.
Nigeria swallowed the agenda.

Many don’t know this country.
It has no permanent favourite.
It has no permanent enemy.
It swallows anything when it wants.

KANU’S ERROR WAS OVERCONFIDENCE

He crossed a line when:

Statements became reckless

Actions became violent

His followers acted without restraint

Lives were lost in the name of agitation

Communities suffered

Evidence piled up publicly

At that point, he gave Nigeria what it needed.

I don’t support killings — no matter who is involved.
No one has the right to take life except God and the lawful institutions of the state.

The consequences that followed were inevitable.

FINAL WORD

Nigeria is not a small project.
It is not weak.
It is not as naive as people think.

It is a whale.

Once it decides to swallow, there is
no noise,
no fear,
no reversal.

Those who understand this truth stay cautious, strategic, and wise.

BE WISE
