Ekiti Govt Sacks Surgeon At EKSUTH Over Alleged Removal Of Patient’s Kidney by fabinfos(op): 1:06pm On Dec 19, 2025
According to a recently released statement by Dr Oyebanji Filani, Honourable Commissioner for Health & Human Services, the lead surgeon has been dismissed, while the rest of the surgical team faces a one-month suspension.

The Ekiti State Government has taken swift action following a panel’s investigation into a surgical complaint by Mr. Joshua Afolayan at EKSUTH.

The government will fund a new kidney transplant for Afolayan and his post-op care for two years. Major departmental reforms at EKSUTH have also been approved to improve clinical standards and patient safety.

See full statement below;

Yesterday, the office of the Honourable Commissioner for Health and Human Services received the detailed report submitted by the seven-member Panel of Enquiry chaired by Professor Francis Faduyile.

The panel was constituted 11 days ago, to investigate the claim made by Mr. Joshua Afolayan regarding a surgical procedure he underwent at the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH).

Upon careful review of the report and its recommendations, the Ekiti State Government has approved the following actions:

The surgeon who had primary responsibility for the surgery is to be dismissed from the service of the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH) with immediate effect.
All members of the surgical team present in the theatre on the day of the operation are to be suspended from duty for a period of one month, pending further administrative review.
The Ekiti State Government will bear the full cost of a new kidney transplant for Mr. Joshua Afolayan and will also take responsibility for his post-transplant care and transplant related medical maintenance for a period of two years.
In line with the recommendations of the Panel, a comprehensive reorganisation of relevant departments within EKSUTH will be undertaken to strengthen clinical governance, accountability, and patient safety.
While the Ekiti State Government continues to stand firmly behind the many dedicated and hardworking health professionals at EKSUTH and acknowledges their sacrifices and commitment to service, it will not hesitate to take decisive action where professional standards are breached.

The Government remains resolute in its commitment to protecting patients, upholding ethical and professional standards in healthcare delivery, and restoring and sustaining public confidence in the Ekiti State health system. Necessary reforms will be pursued to ensure that incidents of this nature do not recur and that EKSUTH continues to serve as a centre of excellence in patient care.

We thank the people of Ekiti State for their patience, and trust, and we reaffirm our unwavering commitment to continued improvement in quality health care, compassion, and responsible governance.

Can you imagine. You went to hospital for medical attention and at the end, your kidney was removed. There's every possibility that there's a cabal of people involved in this.

Ekiti State government should probe this

You don't want anybody to remove your own kidney but you are an expert at removing other people's own. Then you will still goto church on Sunday.

If this was in the old testament, God would have sent thunder. All these bad stuff happening so freely makes one think if the bible is not just some fable.
Re: Ekiti Govt Sacks Surgeon At EKSUTH Over Alleged Removal Of Patient’s Kidney by zenburster:
Was the kidney harvested for eating or for sale?

What sort of nonsense is this again?

You go to a Nigerian hospital and are scared that your surgeon may harvest your organs?

Hippocrates must be turning in his grave

If the only punishment meted on this obviously grave offense is "DISMISSAL" then it is safe to say the Ekiti state government is an accomplice of the organ harvesting going on in that state.

The SW government is part of the syndicate of organ harvesting going on in that region.

What exactly is wrong with Citizens of this country?
The idea that something resembling organ harvesting could even be alleged within a hospital setting is very disturbing.

The doctor is most likely going to face the Medical and Dental council's tribunal...which means more suspension...and if the same tribunal decides that the case should be sent to a proper court for prosecution...even more whala for the surgeon.

Plus, his job prospects are pretty shot. No more jobs for him in nigeria and oversease.

His case is not over.

They should reveal the surgeon's name too in Public interest.

"... period of two years..."? Methinks that should be for as long as Mr. Afolayan lives. If the EKSUTH medical officials hadn't been negligent, the patient wouldn't have required a kidney transplant or post-operative care.

In addition, he should be placed on a lifetime salary/compensation of 500k monthly for as long as he lives!

I can't imagine the trauma the man must be going through as a result of this.

I suggest he gets a very good lawyer to iron out details of a comprehensive & iron-clad compensation plan; that's the barest minimum he deserves for his ordeals.

What a scary news, removing someone's organ intentionally without his consent or permission is a grave offence which should not end in dismissal only but also proper prosecution.

Wickedness of the highest order..people who are meant to protect lives are the ones causing threats to lives. Who are we going to trust again?
We've know medical personnels to be emphatic people but the narratives are changing of late. This is not the first story I've heard in the last one year.

I think there should be a capital punishment for personnels that involve themselves in this kind of shit...either death by hanging or a lethal injection should be released in their body..not even a life sentence cos government might still pardon them.

Abi ..what is the mind set of a person that removed another person's kidney without their consent?Na wa o...there is nothing these my country people no feel do..na make we open our eyes o and make God dey safe us.

This is a very good news

Ekiti state government has done right

God bless the governor/ government

But why did the surgeon remove the kidney

Maybe he thought the guy will die sooner and he traded his kidney - organ harvesting

Was it a professional mistake ,- quackery

They really didn't explain what had happened. The statement just hinted at what the dismissed Surgeon did and pronounced punishment. What did the patient go to the hospital for? What led to his kidney removal? Was it without or with consent?
Was every necessary procedures (clinical and laboratory tests) preceding the surgery done?
Was this a case of organ harvesting?
The Government didn't want to go into details in order to still protect the integrity of the hospital.
