President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, along with the First Lady and Governor Sanwo-Olu received Eyo Festival organizers at his Lagos residence, signaling the commencement of the forthcoming Eyo festival on December 27.

Today, I received the Olori Eyo, the White Cap chiefs, traditional leaders, and other participants at Lagos House, Marina, during the Ijade Opa Eyo procession.

The Eyo Festival gives us an opportunity to present Lagos beyond its reputation as Nigeria’s economic and commercial centre. It reminds the world that our city is also deeply rooted in history, culture, and tourism, and that these elements are just as important. Culture grounds us as a people. It is what we preserve, what we pass on, and what keeps us relevant.

This year’s festival will honour remarkable individuals who helped shape Lagos and Nigeria. We remember the late Chief Abibat Mogaji, the Iyaloja-General and mother of His Excellency, President Bola Tinubu, as well as Mobolaji Johnson, our first military governor. We also honour Alhaji Lateef Jakande, our first civilian governor, and Sir Michael Otedola of the Third Republic. Their contributions and legacies deserve lasting respect.

The Eyo Festival officially begins today, and it speaks to our shared identity and continuity. A society that loses touch with its culture risks losing its sense of purpose, and Lagos has chosen to remain firmly connected to its roots.

I thank His Majesty, Oba Rilwan Akiolu, for his leadership and for championing the return of the Eyo Festival after eight years. I also appreciate everyone who came out to show support for our heritage. Your presence reflects the strength and dignity of our culture.

As we look ahead to Saturday, December 27, I am confident it will be a proud moment for Lagos. It will be an opportunity to welcome friends from across Nigeria and around the world, and to reaffirm that Lagos is the centre of excellence in commerce and a true home of culture and tradition.

The IJADE ỌPA ẸYỌ is a ceremonial procession that embodies the heritage and continuity of Lagos. As its center is the Opambata- a symbol of authority, guidance, and blessings-carried in measured procession through the city.

This procession is led by the Akinisiku of Lagos, Chief Adebola Olalekan Alabi Dosunmu, The Custodian of the Adamu Orisha play, this process signals the official commencement of the upcoming Adamu Orisa Play (Eyo Festival 2025) happening on the 27th December 2025 at the Tafawa Balewa Square, Lagos.

Through this IJADE ỌPA ẸYỌ, Lagos honours its ancestral order, borne in procession, signifies guidance and protection. The Eyo Festival 2025 is dedicated to the First Military Governor of Lagos State, Brig. Mobolaji Johnson, First Civilian Governor of Lagos State, Alhaji Lateef Kayode Jakande, another Former Governor of Lagos State, Sir Michael Otedola and Mother of the President, Alhaja Abibatu Mogaji, OON, MFR
