Obi: Reps Protected A Broken System By Not Criminalising Vote-Buying by SlavaUkraini(op): 7:20am On Dec 22, 2025
Peter Obi, former presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), has criticised the house of representatives for rejecting a proposal to criminalise vote-buying during party primaries.

On Thursday, the parliamentarians, during the clause-by-clause consideration of the report seeking to amend the Electoral Act 2022, voted against a proposal to prohibit the inducement of voters during party primaries.

In a statement posted on X on Sunday, Obi said Nigerians had hoped the lower legislative chamber would take a stance against the practice, which he described as a “cancer” that has long eroded the credibility of elections in the country.

The former presidential candidate said the decision of the green chamber subverts efforts to sanitise Nigeria’s electoral process.

“By refusing to criminalise vote buying at the foundational stage of party primaries, the House has chosen to protect a broken system rather than safeguard the nation’s future,” he wrote.

“Credible elections cannot be built on corrupt foundations, and national progress cannot be achieved while inducement and bribery are legitimised in the democratic process.

“Any effort to stop vote buying must begin at the primaries. Without addressing the problem at its roots, any measures taken later will lack the strength to endure.

“A democracy where votes are bought is not a true democracy; it is a criminal marketplace. Nigeria deserves better. We must prioritise reform. The future of our democracy must not be for sale.”

Obi said the culture of voter inducement has now trickled to town and village unions, clubs and associations, student union elections — who emulate fraudulent politicians.

“How long will we allow our society to be corrupted when the solution lies in addressing the roots of the problem?” he asked.

The job of the Nigerian politician is to maintain the broken system for his benefit while the data boys who will never amount to more than the same politicians kid's hypemen applaud the theft of their collective destinies. We will never have sense in this country when Obi will be attacked for truth.

Funny cunny cunny man!

Anything to justify why he and his deranged minors are bullying ADC for free ticket. No one is giving you free ticket ogbeni. If you can't influence your party delegates to align with your vision, you have no business running for the presidency. If you can't convince less than a thousand delegates to side with you, money-induced or not, you have no business telling over 200 million Nigerians to send you to Aso Villa.

The thing is outside of his Twitter bubble, he carries no tangible influence, reason he's always running away from primaries. In a room full of goats, he doesn't have the charisma to influence a single goat - it's no wonder he lost all the legislative members that won elections using his faux wave in 2023 and he lost control of the LP structure. If he is a serious person, there are many issues he has tweeted about that he shouldn't - instead, he would have worked with his LP senators and HoRs to lobby for reforms in our legislative chambers. Instead of twitting when Tinubu was executing state of emergency in Rivers state, Obi would have worked behind scene to mount a barricade in the chambers, even if he doesn't succeed in stopping Asiwaju. He would have shown he wields real influence. But no, he'd rather hide behind banger tweets and be cheered on by his minors like a clown in the circus.

What am I even saying. This man lost many key figures in his obidient camp because of his lackadaisical attitude. Morris and Akin comes to mind - these are people that put their lives on the line for him and were spending their personal resources to push him. Lol... i see some deranged folks up there saying he's a one man opposition. Opposition ko, roadblock ni. You think it's by tweet? Even Sowore without Obi's level of money is a far better opposition to Tinubu's administration.

BTW, this is pictorial evidence of him buying votes as a PDP man. For years, he was in APGA, PDP and he served in the cabinet of GEJ, he didn't lobby for any of these reforms. Obi can only fool the gullible.

It's so funny that every single thing Obi criticizes or form "holier than thou" about, he has been guilty in the past.

He has been saying "consumption to production" since 2023 when he suddenly bathed with "Hypo". 2025 is ending in a few days, Obi still imports massively into this country - he remains/remained one of the biggest importers of products in this country. Common toothpick factory, Obi didn't set up. This is one of the questions I expected our media to have asked all these years - "Why do you still import while crusading the consumption to production cause?" When TInubu said "Obi, importer and exporter" during the campaign, you all thought he was saying rubbish.

Obi benefits from the same system he uses his entire day to condemn on Twitter. The way he talks about Indonesia, Bangladesh, you would think he established any rice farm or rice processing or clothing company in the last 2-3 years.

Anyways, UAC Foods and Guinness Nigeria PLC won't be happy with Obi. grin If you know, you know! cheesy

Why on God's earth was vote buying not criminalized?

Why was the death penalty not accepted for convicted terrorists?

Many of these so-called leaders in this country are just MAD!!!

Peter Obi will never become the President of Nigeria no matter his wailing and crying. Even the blind and the deaf know this fact.

Nobody has ever won the Presidency through lies, propaganda & tribalism.

I saw this coming, and this is where many of you get it wrong.

At the expense of your welfare as a Nigerian, you deteriorate matters to become PO vs APC/Tinubu and all that.

You put aside the seriousness of the situation.

Whether or not Obi is guilty of vote buying (he likely is, every Nigerian politician is), vote buying should be criminalized! And, with very heavy punishments.

Don't you see that these people are playing with your future? Don't you see they sell our future on every election day? Are you satisfied with the current state of things in this country?

Leave your personal worries about PO. IS THE ISSUE HE HAS RAISED VALID OR NOT?

In fact, I ask you directly, should vote buying be criminalized or not? Should those that sell their votes and those that buy them be thrown to the deepest spot in the worst Nigerian jail or not?

Leave PO in this matter. Look at the issue raised.

Are you not surprised that vote buying wasn't criminalized? I was!

Is there any sense in the decision of those mad people in the HOR? Absolutely not!

I don't blame them, it's the sellers that will still cry about bad governance that I blame. If they legalise it and people refuse to sell nko? But it's a statement of shame to the lower chamber

Foolish people will argue, but when you deep it, you will realize that this is one of the greatest ills against our democracy.

Nip vote buying in the bud (at the primaries) and then scale it all the way up and see how governance changes from elitist settlement concept to a people focused policy driven governance.

Na English sha because we now have idi.ots with data these days.

You want them to criminalize a system that brought them into power?

Of all election rigging strategies vote-buying is the "low hanging fruit"
