I've been thinking of switching to linux from windows, i wanted to use Arch, but that seemed too complex as i am just starting. So I decided to use Fedora, but i'm stuck on what version of Fedora to use. So please senior devs in the forum what version do you recommend between KDE Plasma and Fedora Workstation. Thanks so much in advance |

danielclerkson:They are both great options. KDE Plasma is very customizable and closer to Windows, but it can be overwhelming for beginners. I would recommend Fedora Workstation (GNOME) to start with. It has fewer distractions and gives a better beginner experience. It also makes switching to Ubuntu Desktop later (if you ever want) much easier. Hint : I personally use Ubuntu ![]() |

codemarshal08:Thanks I will check it out. Also about Ubuntu, is it beginner friendly ? |

Yes, Ubuntu is very beginner friendly. There's plenty of support out there ..community, youtube tutorials, and more which makes learning easier. It is also widely used on servers. so if you are aiming for roles like backend, DevOps, or cloud, starting with Ubuntu makes a lot of sense. Starting with Ubuntu Desktop now makes moving to Ubuntu Server seamless ( same commands, package management (apt) and file structures). You just lose the GUI but your Linux knowledge transfers directly. That said, Fedora is also a decent choice, so both are solid for getting started. |

codemarshal08:I am mainly doing front-end for now and alot of python and I don't plan on transitioning anytime soon. I've been doing some research on Ubuntu and tbh it is recommended alot, as it is said to be beginner friendly, I really want to use Fedora, but i don't want to screw up big time tbh, please what do you recommend ? |

danielclerkson:Either of them is a fine option for your use case (frontend, Python). Fedora is stable. Ubuntu just gets recommended more because it has a larger community and more beginner-focused guides. so it is often easier to find help when you are stuck. Honestly, I would advise you not to overthink your choice. Whichever you choose, the Linux fundamentals you learn will transfer easily. |

danielclerkson:Stick to noob friendly distro like mint, manjaro before you regret shooting yourself in the foot. |

I've been on Fedora KDE desktop for over ten years. Best thing that ever happened to me. Currently, I have three laptops on Fedora KDE desktop: One laptop on Fedora 20 "Heisenberg" ( KDE Plasma 4.11.0 ) One laptop on Fedora release 38 (KDE Plasma 5.27.7) One on Fedora release 42 (KDE Plasma 6.5.2) Best Desktop environment for an engineer. |

codemarshal08:Thanks for the advice, I was thinking of getting a thinkpad and i heard they are the best for linux, whenever i give it a try i'll give you my feedback. For now I am using WSL on my current laptop and getting myself familiar with the linux environment |

qtguru:So i've heard, it is one of the main reasons i want to choose it tbh |

Kaczynski:I've seen mint and used it a little, although not on my pc, i just want to try something more, something exiciting |

danielclerkson:Use it, don't succumb to any Arch pressure, unless you maintain Linux or something it's a waste of time, but if you are deep in Linux and want performance Arch is it. But for me I'm a money person so it's a waste of my time. |

qtguru:I am still a noob to linux tbh, do you still recommend it ? |

danielclerkson:Yes do |
| Re: Does Anyone Use Fedora ? by danielclerkson(op): 1:53pm On Dec 24, 2025 |
qtguru:Thanks I'll definitely try it out, im also getting a thinkpad for the "maximum" Linux experience ![]() |

qtguru:lmao, isn't that the best way to learn though? Ricing is fun and time wasting but you'll learn a lot while at it. if you are deep in Linux and want performance Arch is iti wonder what deep in linux means here, are you compiling your own kernel? are you upstreaming patches? You really don't have to be deep in linux to use Arch or any other linux distro, you learn and bend it to your will while using it, this applies to any operating system or dev environment you interact with (windows, macOS, linux distros, the BSDs etc) and this should be the barest minimum for computer literates. Also, Arch is mainly for bleeding edge kernel and packages, you get the latest, now. You want performance, check out XanMod and other modified linux kernels. |

Night0307:All depend on one usecase. Not everyone is a basement dweller and prefer something stable like debian, redhat, opensuse etc |

Lol, I use Arch by the way.... |

Kaczynski:Facts, debian and kde plasma is enough for anyone. |
