The hardworking first lady, you have tried. But it would be more honourable for you to have built schools, sponsor formal education and reward excellence to encourage your people and get them informed instead.

We in the South value thing that opens our mind because that's the only recipe for personal and societal development. You see all these circumcision, weddings and religious obligations, they are personal responsibilities we can do on our own. We don't need the government to do that for us.

Kind of funny that a governor's wife who is doing what amounts to a public health intervention is being abused

The only criticism I give here is that Nigeria doesn't have a national health service that covers everyone. Also poor water supply

Thats the problem. Circumstise, they say no, say religion, immunise they say no, say religion, go to school, they say no say religion. Haba naa. Are they the only ones practicing islam religion on earth?

I just find it strange that you are mocking a governor's wife for sponsoring the procedure . Especially since it can cost money and is expensive for some families.

Abegi, let's criticize with sense sometimes. Unless you are opposed to circumcision, which is all right.

Nobody here is making any claim that circumcision is a bad idea. What does come across as absurd and slightly vulgar is the report that it is not the male Sokoto State governor, or a MALE doctor from the Sokoto State Department of Health, but the governor's female WIFE, of all people, who is appointing herself a an advocate of MALE genital hygiene, in an Islamic state, of all places.

Any advocacy of male sexual or genital health should be presented by a MALE government representative who should ideally be a MALE doctor. Male reproductive health should NOT be made the domain of ANY woman, just as FEMALE reproductive health should not become the responsibility of ANY male government official on the public stage.

To flip the coin, imagine the global outrage that would greet a formal press release by a MALE state governor in Nigeria, that he eagerly looks forward to personally supervising open-leg virginity tests and genital mutilation inspections for all FEMALE university students in his state. Such a perverted governor would find himself facing numerous lawsuits, even as he becomes the subject of cruel mockery for the rest of his life after being booted out of office in the next election following such a ridiculous announcement.

In short, government policy relating to MALE reproductive health should be presented to the public by MALE officials or MALE medical doctors ONLY, and vice versa.
