Police Arrest Masquerades for Violating Executive Order

...Recover 179 arms, 323 ammunition, 100 live cartridges in 2025 operations

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested masquerades involved in unlawful processions and activities in violation of the state government’s Executive Order restricting masquerade outings to approved locations with mandatory police permission and security coverage.

The arrests were disclosed by the Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, during an end-of-year press conference with journalists in Uyo, where the Command reviewed its 2025 security operations and outlined priorities for 2026.

CP Azare said enforcement of the Executive Order on masquerade activities significantly reduced incidents of violence, disorder and breaches of public peace across the state. He reaffirmed the Command’s zero tolerance for jungle justice, unlawful gatherings and activities capable of undermining public safety.

The Commissioner noted that Akwa Ibom remained generally peaceful, calm and stable throughout 2025, attributing the feat to intelligence-led policing, proactive patrols, strategic deployments, strong community cooperation and effective inter-agency collaboration.

He disclosed that the Command recorded major operational breakthroughs, including the arrest of suspects involved in armed robbery, cultism, kidnapping and other violent crimes, as well as the recovery of large caches of weapons and ammunition. According to him, officers recovered 179 assorted arms, 323 different types of ammunition and 100 live cartridges, while several criminal hideouts and identified black spots were dismantled.

On the issue of misinformation, CP Azare expressed concern over the rising spread of fake news, especially on social media, revealing that arrests were made for the fabrication and circulation of false information capable of causing panic and tension in the state.

Highlighting other achievements in 2025, the Commissioner said 563 suspects

These guys clearly went there for a community war, not a cultural display. I’m glad they were caught. The real shame is that they’re ruining the reputation for those who actually want to celebrate their heritage genuinely.

If dem dey regulate masquerade wey dey cause disorder, wetin about those "men of God" wey dey use Bible play magic, collect people money finish, or give them false hope? Abi dat one no fit cause mental and financial violence?

The law suppose to catch all of them equally! If any pastor or im follower dey do unlawful gathering, dey incite hate, dey defraud people, or dey cause public disorder, police too must arrest them. Na so e suppose be. Freedom of religion no mean freedom to use religion cheat people or cause problem for society.

People truly don't read. To hide stuff from a black man, put it in a book. Those folks up there thinking the guns belong to the masquerades.

But wetin be the govnor problem with masquerades? These are our cultural heritage. If I were in his shoes, the executive order would be for masquerades not to harass people. Period!

Hmm….. like it isn’t a known fact that akwa ibom masquerades carry guns for war. They even go to other communities to cause war. If you haven’t lived there, don’t argue with what you don’t know. I spent from 2021— 2022 in akwa ibom so I know what I’m talking about. Ask anyone that have lived there. Some of them even go as far as raping girls inside the bush.

To complete the cycle those firearms should be crushed or shredded right in front of the press.

There is a trust deficit with security services in the land. There is no guarantee that those things will not find their way back into the hands of felons or reused for future press displays if returned to police lockups.
