Those Who Learned Manual Driving, Was It Worth It? by Wxstudio(op): 9:45am On Dec 23, 2025
I’m about to start driving lessons and I’m unsure whether to learn manual or automatic.
For those who started with manual, was it hard at first? How long did it take you to finally get hold used to it? Do you think it gave you an advantage later, or would you advise a beginner to start with automatic instead?

If the car your bringing is not manual, after learning and you didn't practice it for a while, it would be very hard a day you'll try to drive manual, except the car your bringing is manual, then learn with manual

Learn both... It might be a life saver someday.
That's my take.
Manual is a bit harder.
Re: Those Who Learned Manual Driving, Was It Worth It? by OkanlawonB(m):
The standard vehicle for learning driving is manual. If you can drive manual, to handle an automatic car will not be a problem but if you use automatic to learn and you've only been driving automatic it may be difficult for you to handle a manual car without another special training.

To obtain an EU driver's license, you use manual vehicle to learn and to do the practical exam. This may change come 2035 when the EU plan to phase out combustion engined vehicles because all EVs (electric vehicles) are automatic.

Go to driving school and tell them you want to learn. They will always use manual. No point asking many questions. Follow the status quo.

learn manual cos it's harder, there's no big deal about automatic cars.

Let me break down d difference to u

Manual
U control
Steering
Gear
Clutch n others

In auto u only control steering, no clutch n no problem with gear cos once u put am for Wetin u want na so u go drive am reach Kaduna.

But if na manual, there are rules

Once u want to move, it's gear 1 n so many basics

Learn manual driving, you will be able to drive automatic transmission without learning it. But if you learn automatic driving only, you will still have to learn how to drive manual car later.

Manual cars are being phased out, so why learn them when the next stage of cars are the self driving cars?

I leared to drive a manual car, the first day I was given an SUV. (automatic) To drive, I drive it with ease.
So yes it's worth it.

Yes,
learning to drive a manual is not only okay for beginners, it's often beneficial.
It requires more coordination up front but teaches vehicle control,
Improves situational awareness, and makes you a more versatile driver.
Go for it, it will help you overall.

Don't stress yourself over manual driving. Life has gone past that and it's not going backward..

Worth every bit of it!

The class of those who know automatic is crap!
Re: Those Who Learned Manual Driving, Was It Worth It? by FatimaAbubakar(f): 2:33pm On Jan 02
I drive manual and automatic, but to be honest, I prefer automatic transmission. Manual transmission is torture. Why suffer yourself when technology has made driving easy?
Re: Those Who Learned Manual Driving, Was It Worth It? by mycar:
No waste your time with manual, learn with automatic, the world is moving forward, you can use the extra time to perfect reversing and manurvering
Re: Those Who Learned Manual Driving, Was It Worth It? by obonujoker(m): 2:33pm On Jan 02
Yes it is worth it.

I started driving on my Honda CRV SUV, manual transmission.

However, Automatic is best... Easier is better
Re: Those Who Learned Manual Driving, Was It Worth It? by Fugitive: 2:33pm On Jan 02
Yes. You have an advantage.
Re: Those Who Learned Manual Driving, Was It Worth It? by ceejay80s(m):
Yes
Very worth it,
If u can drive manual then u can drive anything and I mean anything, even women get manual and automatic drive,
Doggy is still my number 1 auto drive
Re: Those Who Learned Manual Driving, Was It Worth It? by pocohantas(f): 2:34pm On Jan 02
Don't stress yourself.
Ignore the comments telling you to learn manual because if you learn it and don't drive it actively, it is equal to learning with automatic.

I learned and drove manual for years.
I am not sure I have seen anyone around me drive one in the past 7yrs. If the need will come up one day, I don't know.

Automatic cars was designed for handicap but u all hijacked it
Re: Those Who Learned Manual Driving, Was It Worth It? by uuzba(m): 2:36pm On Jan 02
I learnt with manual.
And when Automatic was available, I didn't have to learn anything.
I was already over qualified.
So now, I can drive both confidently.
If you learn only automatic, you'd never have the patience to learn manual and you'd probably never know it.
Re: Those Who Learned Manual Driving, Was It Worth It? by brain54(m): 2:37pm On Jan 02
It's always best to learn with manual transmission...

Even if you see stick transmission it won't be a big deal to drive!
Re: Those Who Learned Manual Driving, Was It Worth It? by ogolad(m): 2:38pm On Jan 02
Learn with manual transmission, with that you can drive any car, but if you learn with automatic you will not be able to drive manual when the opportunity present itself, my opinion though
Re: Those Who Learned Manual Driving, Was It Worth It? by Authoreety: 2:38pm On Jan 02
