Agro Commodity Trading in Nigeria

‎Agro commodity trading is the business of buying and selling agricultural products such as sesame, soybeans, maize, cashew nuts, ginger, hibiscus flower, sorghum etc.
Nigeria is one of the largest producers of these commodities, making it one of the most profitable business sectors in the country with high turnover rate.
‎
‎Why Agro Trading Is Profitable:
‎
‎1. High demand for Nigerian commodities. Most Nigerian farm produce are regarded as one of the best in the world due to some reasons.
‎
‎2. Low cost of sourcing in local markets compared to the international price.
‎
‎3. Strong export opportunities due to high demand of Nigeria origin farm produce.
‎
‎4. Year-round availability. Although we don't have good storage facilities for most of our produce but there are a couple of them that can be sourced all year round. Cashew, hibiscus, sesame seeds etc
‎
‎5. High turnover for fast-moving commodities like grains. Everything being equal couple with delays, an average local transactions should be completed within 14 days and export depending on the volume and the handling processes should be done within 45-90 days max.

What You Need Before Starting Afro commodities trading (Foundational Requirements)

‎Starting agro trading doesn’t require much but most importantly, you need knowledge, structure, and due diligence systems. Below are the highlights:

‎First: Choose Your Commodity
‎
‎Start with 1 or 2 commodities. Some commodities you can consider are:
‎
‎Sesame
‎Cashew nuts
‎Hibiscus (Zobo)
‎Ginger
‎Soybeans
‎Maize etc
‎These commodities are high in demand, which makes them have high turnover rate.
‎
‎Secondly: Understand Market Prices
‎
‎Commodity prices change weekly and most extreme cases within hours. So, you must know:

‎Current buying price
‎Current selling price
‎Major markets and price variations
‎Seasonal price patterns
‎
‎Knowing weekly price updates protects you from buying too high or selling too low.
‎
‎Third: Verify Your Suppliers
‎
‎This is the number one rule in agro trading. Before paying any supplier o. First first check if the supplier is genuine and has street credibility not online credibility. Very important.
‎
‎Request trade references where applicable. Tip. If you are new to a place, go to the nearest police station and ask of the Inspector of Crime or something equivalent, he knows who's genuine or not and will generously recommend (if he does, you know what to do)

‎Conduct site verification
‎Confirm commodity quality and quantity before any form of commitment. Se what you want to buy.
‎
‎Use a verification agent if you are not in the location.
‎A bad supplier can cause a total loss and months of set backs.
