Nigeria should scrap National Orientation Agency and use the fund they are wasting on them to sponsor announcements of government policies in churches, mosques and village squares. The level of ignorance in this country is alarming. More than 70% of rural dwellers are not even aware of the tax laws Yampotatocarrot: |

They look solid, but there’s nothing underneath. People have far more influence than they realise. A single clear internal stance: ‘this law will not stand’, shifts outcomes. Speak the truth within and let it do its work. ibechris: |

In a society with no rule of law, obedience becomes a negotiation, not a duty. If a citizen refuses obedience because the state is unjust, three things happen at once: 1. The moral contract breaks Citizenship rests on reciprocity: protection → obedience justice → cooperation Once the state stops fulfilling its side, obedience is no longer a moral requirement. 2. The relationship shifts from “subject of law” to “strategic actor” When law collapses, power becomes fluid. A citizen who refuses obedience is not rebelling against order; they’re withdrawing consent from disorder. 3. Legitimacy fractures In rule-of-law societies, obedience is anchored in principle. In failed systems, obedience is anchored in fear or convenience. Refusal exposes the illegitimacy. It says: “You broke the pact. I owe you nothing.” cocolacec: |

Cmanforall:I said same thing, there are different types of taxes. What many nIgerians werent paying was income tax. And the reason was because many Nigerians dont have jobs. Yes, many nigerians are self employed and struggling. So, income tax from such sector wasnt really coming in but those working in companies, govt establishments alreayd have their income tax deducted. While most Nigerians pay other type of taxes such as VAT, bank charges go to govt as well, import duties, etc. Most Nigerians already pay that. As for hookup, ur tax man said it doesnt matter what u do, u will be taxed, he even used hookup as example. So, that is it. Now, my concern, Nigeria suffers from massive poor job sector, which means most Nigerians have to struggle to find something to do. In such a country, how dare u take up to 25 percent of such struggle? Like we need to be having sense. Should I really explain the reality of Nigeria today? Look, calling those who earn 800k yearly poor is wicked. Those people are not living, they are dead. They are worse than poor. What u should tag poor today is 15m yearly. Yes, a person on such income with family is poor. Here is the reality, Nigerians provide everything for them selves. There is nothing govt provide here. Let say I made 20m last year from remote works, and in my family house, my people need light. So, let say I spend 4m on electricity, fueling, generator repair and I didnt pay income tax but have been paying other taxes such as VAT, importation duties, bank charges, etc. Now, govt comes and add income tax which will be around 4m plus. Now, my 20m purchasing power has decreased to 16m. But my electricity problem did not decrease. I will still sort out the electricity which cost me 4m last year. Can u see how govt reduced my purchasing power? Now, let say becus of bad roads, I spend about 1.5m yearly to maintain car, what happens to that? Now, becus most Nigerians are poor so u surely will have dependencies such as parents, siblings, friends who once in a while need ur help. I still spend heavily on bottle water yearly, if govt had provided water, this would have been sorted out. So, govt cut down on my purchasing power without resolving any core social issues for me. So, who will fix those problems I cant fix now as my income has dropped? Omo, we are so funny in this country. In a country with high rate of unemployment, encourage people to make money and increase purchasing power and reduce income tax. With increase purchasing power, u can have VAT at 10 percent, govt will still make good money and govt should ensure the VAT money is utlized properly to fix social issues and gradually introduce income tax at lower rate until the country is developed with structured institutions. What govt needed to tackle now is cut down in running cost, block corruption, fix electoral system so that people orietated candidates win, make corruption unattractive at all cost. taxing already poor country to this tone of 25 percent is madness. One of the reasons foreign clients work with Nigerians is cheap labour. So, if u are now taxing me like developed worlds, how do I charge my clients cheaper? Dman! |

ibechris:They've seen the handwriting on the wall that Nigerians would not comply with any TIN registration. So they're devising other means. I mean it's so nauseating: Insurance Tax for housing Company Tax PIT VAT pre-export registration Etc. Yet we provide our water ourselves, road, housing, security etc. He has borrowed more than Buhari, yet we still pay more for fuel, no Form A anymore. Who are those advising Tinubu? |

cocolacec:And what is the fundamental duty of government to their citizens in every society? Pls don't be a dvmb citizen. Why are they so desperate on this tax issue, but they've blatantly ignored the duty they owe the Nigerian s, many of which have been paying tax. Here is a breakdown of the primary benefits UK citizens receive from their tax contributions (Income Tax, National Insurance, and VAT). 1. Healthcare (The NHS) The most direct benefit is the National Health Service. Unlike many other countries, your taxes ensure that: Emergency Care: A&E visits and ambulance services are free at the point of use. Hospital Treatment: Surgeries, cancer treatments, and overnight stays are covered. GP Services: Consultations with your local doctor don't cost a penny. 2. Social Security and Pensions A huge portion of tax revenue (specifically National Insurance) goes toward the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) to provide a safety net: State Pension: Regular payments once you reach retirement age. Unemployment Support: Benefits like Universal Credit if you lose your job. Disability Support: Payments like Personal Independence Payment (PIP) for those with long-term health conditions. 3. Education and Childcare Taxes fund the development of the next generation: State Schools: Free primary and secondary education for all children. Higher Education: While students pay tuition, the government provides the massive up-front loans required to attend university. Childcare: Schemes like "30 hours free childcare" for working parents of toddlers. 4. Public Safety and Infrastructure Your taxes pay for the "unseen" systems that keep the country running: Emergency Services: Funding for the Police, Fire Brigade, and Coastguard. Infrastructure: Building and maintaining motorways, A-roads, and bridges. The Environment: Funding for the Environment Agency (flood defenses) and waste management. Defense: Funding the British Army, Royal Navy, and RAF to ensure national security. 5. Local Community Services If you pay Council Tax specifically, that money stays local to fund: Bin Collections: Weekly or fortnightly waste and recycling services. Street Lighting & Maintenance: Keeping pavements safe and fixing potholes. Libraries and Parks: Public spaces that are free for everyone to use. Where does £1 of your tax go? To give you a sense of scale, for every £1 spent by the government (based on recent Treasury data): ~25p goes to Social Protection (pensions and benefits). ~20p goes to Health (the NHS). ~10p goes to Education. ~10p goes to Interest on National Debt. The rest is split between defense, transport, and general public services. Would you like me to find out how much of your specific salary goes toward these different services using a tax calculator? This is what we should be protesting about. |

Xavicosim:The tax rate is even too high for a country who has majority of its citizens living below the poverty line. They say poor people (anybody earning 800k annually or 67k monthly), won't pay tax, meaning that a family man with 4 kids earning 68k to 200k monthly which is not even enough to cater for the family will have his salary slashed because they feel by their definition he's not poor. Nigerians are just too docile. Bunch of weak followers |
