The army can't arrest anyone for civil crimes or criminal offence and hold them. They have to hand them over to the police.

Every security oufit has the right to detain you when caught in abnormal acts. Let me don't call it arrest, but the intent is to hold dem down in a confined space for interrogation or investigation later.

Temporary restrain and hand over.

Call it citizens arrest. You too as a civilian has legal rights to temporarily restrain anyone doing crimes in front of you and hand them over to the police.

They should also be fighting Christian bandits in Benue and Plateau and Christian terrorists in SE.

Nice one. Policemen are supposed to be out in the community getting the scuttlebutt of potential crimes, not protecting those that can afford private company security. Hopefully this news spreads rapidly amongst police breaking the edict from the Oga at the top.😉

DSS is not more powerful than police in Nigeria but it should be as DSS has more power in terms of national security.

But there have been cases of DSS clashing with police and even police beating up and arresting them and vice versa as DSS has also have arrested some police while clashing with them which is unfortunate.

They are both federal government agencies that have seperate hierarchy and both report to the president directly through the IGP for police and office of NSA for DSS.
The DSS has no constitutional power to over see or enforce police operations or make arrest on police except It is a matter of national security for example a police officer was involved in espionage or terrorism that is actively a DSS Operation.
DSS is more of intelligence gathering, detection and prevention of threat, terrorism, espionage against the national security and protecting key people in government while police is more of enforcing law and order.

I[b] In Nigeria, it has been proven time after time, that the Nigeria police is too incompetent and corrupt to carry any meaningful oversight over it's rank and file. The only thing police is scared of , is the wrath of the army. They respect the army more than their superiors. So if the army can curtain their excesses, it will be a welcome development. The police has to face their primary tasks too. There are a lot of violent crimes going on unabated in every city in Nigeria.
