INEC rejects Makinde-backed PDP NWC

The Independent National Electoral Commission has said it will not recognise the Kabiru Turaki-led National Working Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party, citing existing court judgments and unresolved legal processes.
In a letter dated December 22, 2025, and signed by its Secretary, Dr Rose Oriaran-Anthony, INEC said it could not act on demands to acknowledge or upload on its website the list of national officers said to have been elected at the National Convention held on November 15 and 16, 2025, in Ibadan.

The commission explained that its position was guided by subsisting court decisions and pending litigation relating to the leadership crisis within the PDP.

INEC stated that it would be improper to recognise any factional officers while the matter remains before the courts.

The party is currently in coma and with the way things are, the party might not survive this.

What is really going on is this INEC is not acting based on political preference for one party or another, but on a risk-averse legal strategy. They are prioritizing their own legal safety above political expediency for any party.

The agency fears that by uploading one faction's list, they could be held in contempt of a court order they are aware of. The public sees INEC taking sides in SDP/NNPP but "being indecisive" in PDP. From INEC's perspective, the difference is not the party, but the specific legal landscape surrounding each crisis at the moment a decision is required.

No wonder Makinde gathered media chat today to lament. When INEC called them for meeting, they told INEC they will wait for court judgment, so why the lamentation?.
And again, don't forget Nairaland lawyers who were pushing them to go ahead with the owambe party convention in Ibadan.
