This growing trend of paving entire house compounds means that rainwater can no longer soak naturally into the ground. Instead, water runs off quickly and in large volumes straight into drains and surrounding streets. Because there is no open soil left within the compound to absorb or slow down the water, even moderate rainfall can overwhelm drainage systems and easily lead to flooding. Beyond surface flooding, this practice also has longer-term environmental consequences. The absence of exposed soil prevents natural percolation of rainwater into the ground, which is essential for recharging underground water aquifers. Over time, reduced groundwater replenishment can contribute to falling water tables, increased dependence on boreholes, and greater water scarcity, especially during dry seasons.

Interlocking is done with line openings for percolation of water. My only complaint is lack of green areas for plants. |

Chief, This isn't a growing trend, the insides of compounds/estates, especially in urban centers have always been covered either with cement or interlock. Furthermore, I understand your concern, and that is technically beyond the scope of operations of an ordinary Nigerian. But then, in my opinion, this style gives the compound a premium look. |

They don't want to cut grasses every now and then. People don't even plant trees again in their compound, something that used to be fashionable back then. |

I planted about forty papaya trees in my compound and the people that interlocked their own compounds are always asking me for pawpaw |
| Re: The Ugly Trend Of Paving The Entire Compound by Marvyx(m): 4:25pm On Dec 24, 2025 |
Talk about fact that there are hardly compounds with trees again. Someone can hardly get oranges, paw paw and other fruits from our compound unlike when we were growing up. |

The only valid argument is lack of land to plant flowers, crops etc. The ground water argument no make sense. |

This information doesn't make sense. Does the people in the compound depend on well water? I thought OP wanted to say it will have effect on the building over time. It's not the whole street or city that's covered, it's just the compound. |

Who would maintain the compound for me? The ones I let out, tenants are usually not interested to take any responsibility for the compounds. I live abroad and won’t know if they are messing things up. Many Nigerians lack maintenance culture. The green area in my country home is always overgrown and paying someone every quarter did not resolve it. I’ll pave everything once I go home next year. Make e look ugly, na me get am. |

| Re: The Ugly Trend Of Paving The Entire Compound by Svoboda(m): 4:32pm On Dec 24, 2025 |
Growing up, we encountered gravelled driveways, gardens and treed compounds. Everywhere seemed naturally beautiful, with breezy evenings. Now, you have more aesthetics and mechanics and less organics. Air conditioned homes and less of sunlight. |

Rubbish....Interlocking when done properly leaves room for water to move through, for rain heavy areas like Lekki, it is even more imparative to do this otheriwse you risk having mud or dirt all over the bottom and sides of your house. All that environmental concern is hogwash.....Come to New York City or downtown Atlanta you won't see space not to talk of greens yet the drainage system works incredibly well, so stop the LAMBA! |

LibertyRep:Man is actively disconnecting himself from nature and that is why we are having a whole lot of problems these days. We are living in ways nature did not intend us to opening doors for new problems to arise. Do you know it rained heavily in my area just about two days ago, something completely unheard of since time immemorial. Even Saudi Arabia just got snow for the first time in over 30yrs. These are the signs of anomalies arising from our actions as humans. |

| Re: The Ugly Trend Of Paving The Entire Compound by Incognito403: 4:34pm On Dec 24, 2025 |
flexyrule:Thunder faya premium. The real premium is greenery. People just like these paved grounds because they require little or no maintenance and we have poor maintenance culture. But it's bad for the environment and goes against responsible development. Later people will be wondering why there's so much flooding in our urban areas especially Lagos. |
| Re: The Ugly Trend Of Paving The Entire Compound by TheAdvocate(m): 4:35pm On Dec 24, 2025 |
immortalcrown:There is a polythene layer before the interlocking, which further prevents the penetration of rainwater. I know that because I have seen hundreds of laying of interlocks. They lay it with the polythene to prevent grass from sprouting up. |
| Re: The Ugly Trend Of Paving The Entire Compound by GloriousGbola: 4:36pm On Dec 24, 2025 |
jmoore:paving stones are preferred for waterlogged areas precisely because they will allow water to percolate through their gaps to the ground so i dont understand what you are saying here |
| Re: The Ugly Trend Of Paving The Entire Compound by Incognito403: 4:37pm On Dec 24, 2025 |
abbey621:Even if it leaves room for water to percolate. Do you know that flooding isn't only caused by saturation of the soil? There's also hortonian overland flow which is caused by (rain) water pouring faster than the soil can assimilate. This interlocking increases the risk of flooding due to hortonian overland flow. Lagos especially needs to take action on this. Government should encourage greenery. After all, research has shown that the poor mental and emotional status of our generation is linked to the dull coloura of these concrete materials. |
