Having said that,it's the duty of immigration officers to check the passports of passengers and not airport staff

It's not a must to have Nigerian passport.
Some countries make you renounce your Nigerian citizenship to claim theirs.
And all these shouldn't prevent her from traveling.

At local airport, we are require to present an government issue ID (Nigeria Passort, Togo passport, America passport, etc for identification purpose only.

Just travelled with family within Nigeria and all the aliens amongst us used their Nigerian passports. Made sure all he foreign ones were dropped. Thought about this matter. You can indeed get embarrassed and lose your preciously expensive domestic flight while trying to shalaye (since I don't bribe anyone).

And by the way the Immigration Service is authorized to operate anywhere within our borders. So even road travels particularly to border states can be dicey.

Yes, you are free but if you hold foreign papers then immigration is not obliged to ask for your entry documents, aka visa.

I don't know of any dual citizen that doesn't have a Nigerian passports. A lot easier than getting visas into Nigeria when travelling in and out.

The lady should get Nigerian docs or risk immigration wahala. There is no 'Nigerian' written on anybody's head. Peddling a foreign passport while claiming to be a Nigerian with no proof don dey go felony park.

And after all the hullabaloo of NIN why should an adult Nigerian not have one in 2025. You can't even operate an account properly without one these days.

But immigration does not know you 'from birth'.
It only knows documents like you said. I tell you It is better you provide a civilian ID card than a foreign passport.

The moment you do that you expose yourself to long talk.

Just travelled a week ago with family. All duals dropped their foreign passports if you want to avoid unnecessary delays.

If a dual citizen shows you any of his ID from any of the countries he is affiliated, it should be sufficient except when explicitly is required, mandatory.

Then again, if it turns out the guy is attached to her maybe as a tour admin or her immigration liaison, he maybe trying to protect her from future problems as regards her length of stay.

There are a myraid of reasons, the ID only formalizes the claim. One is Nigerian before the ID.

Don't forget NIN is not free... Infact, it is said to be renewable (shocker right!!?). There are plenty in the outskirts, countryside, villages, wilderness, that don't have it.

Some people don't even get to have passports due to maybe losing expiry, some lose the documents altogether, there's emergency certificates for that.


In this case however, it is intra-migration any ID should have been sufficient, I mean what extra procedure exists if one goes through his or her own country as a dual citizen showing the ID of the other country if that all she has or wishes to present?


It is different if the question is coming from an immigration officer or one designated to handle immigration responsibilities for said national but that doesn't seem to be the case.

Her foreign passport is an ID. Even in United States, you can use your Nigeria passport as an ID. Also, they asked her to prove her Nigeria Identity, she asked them to give return her foreign passport. That is because the foreign passport has a spot for Place of birth where it will state Nigeria.

If you are born in Nigeria according to the constitution you are a Nigerian. Even at the international airport, immigration allows Nigerians with foreign passport to enter. When you are returning, you just have to proof that you have applied for your Nigerian passport.

So how's that a crime? Should it even be an issue? Law says you should travel with a recognised govt ID. Is the US passport not recognized? Just let her pass and board. Why choose to disgrace yourself?

There are many ways to know if someone is Nigeria by simply asking basic questions. u don't need an identity card.

And have a foreign passport doesn't mean u are not Nigerian. Pls educate urself properly.

Guy, stop misyearning! You don’t need a Nigerian passport to show anything. Foreigners are free to travel into Nigeria and from state to state. All you need to present is an ID. Nobody has the right to ask if you are Nigerian. Why are Nigerians so slow? 🤔

How many Nigerians have the Nigerian passport. It's possible that some of the men arguing with the lady do not have the Nigerian passport.
You don't need to be a Nigerian in Nigeria to prove that you are a Nigerian.
