So Europe that is naturally a cold winter paving everywhere with concrete to absorb heat and warm should a standard for a hot country like Nigeria?
In case you don't, green plants and trees takes in carbon dioxide in the presence of sunlight and release oxygen which is very cold gas into environment, and that is while you a cold sensation under a tree during a hot afternoon.
There’s no rain in Europe, you mean? What of tropical countries like Brazil or even southernmost states of America like Florida where their seasons are like West African seasons?

Don’t excuse government ineptitude of building substandard cities to people who want to pave their compounds. I’ll understand if you advise those paving their compounds to allow space for trees. Apart from that your reasons are wack.

I am sure abroad where you live it is not all paved. You are required to mow your compound all the time. Your mower cost money and time as well. So why can't you make same sacrifice to preserve your ancestry land?
Should a landlord include mowing of lawn in the tenancy agreement or you paying landscapers to do it every week, will you comply?

Then give an explanation where the same coastal land in another part of the world is not experiencing such even tho it is technically more crowded than Lagos. Come to Coney Island or the Bronx, everywhere is locked, vegetation is scarce and yet the issue you mentioned is null and void, why is that?
Last time I checked, New York was a geographical location to experience winter and concrete are needed to store heat energy and release into the atmosphere when temperature.
So, paving everywhere with concrete in a hot country like Nigeria where plants should be grown to increase the atmospheric oxygen level to in order to cool environment because oxygen is a very cold gas

The tenant can look after it. When we stayed in a compound with no tiles, I use to cut the grass. On our side. Its beautiful to do. In our house we will tile only the front for cars and leave the back bare and natural, I plan to build a traditional hut and walk bare foot on natural ground.

I would love to make a garden and plant lots of green even on the tiles using bags or buckets.

They don't want to cut grasses every now and then.

People don't even plant trees again in their compound, something that used to be fashionable back then.
One major hallmark of the GRAs the colonials developed and lived in was the abundance of trees and other forms of greenery! Usually, there'd be a park, golf course or polo field nearby, which all come with lots of greenery too. Annoyingly, most of those trees and greenery in the GRAs of Lagos, the then regional capitals, and also the major towns of the time like Onitsha and Aba have either been drastically reduced or disappeared completely!
Re: The Ugly Trend Of Paving The Entire Compound by SeriouslySense(m): 8:36pm On Dec 24, 2025
We were mearnt to stay close to nature with beautiful greenery and walk on the bare ground. Man was created from the ground. I love the ground, clay, and silt. lipsrsealed

Interlocking is done with line openings for percolation of water.

My only complaint is lack of green areas for plants.
After landscaping, nylon sheets are laid before spreading sand to place the casted stones. Therefore there is actually very little percolation to the subsoil.

NYC has maybe 3 or 4 truly cold months in a year, the summers are sometimes hotter than 9ja, the comparison is the coastal nature being surrounded by water.

The nature alone will lower the temperature when its hot. Even our windows are small instead of big windows for ventilation and more cooling, I understand its due to insecurity.

The way I hate this practice eh.

I mean, government should make it a law that any builder must plant at least 3 trees.

I hate seeing bland empty landscapes
you are clowning. Soils aren’t easily seen in the western world. If you wanna plant trees, there are places to do that.

Yes in the Summer and the comparison is Lagos not NigeriaKano is hotter), this is not disputable, you can use Google to assist you. Lagos average temp is between 75 to 90 degrees F while NYC can average 85 to 95 degrees F in the summer, the highest ever was 10 degrees F while highest ever for Lagos was 102 degree F. E shocked me too when I researched it even tho I've lived here for 15 years grin

I have been sending about 50k every month to clear grass around my compound, since i am not there, I don't want to be spending money like that all the time. Just want a one time solution

Make sure you have only ONE Tenant at a time. Tell him to live for free or take very little rent. Most preferably a Family man with a wife and kids. Ultimately, he would be responsible for keeping the compound clean.

An Igbo Adage says - The Dog that is owned by everyone dies of hunger, because Okeke may assume that Okafor have fed it, and vice versa.

The tenant in my country home pays 0Naira in rent and is responsible for keeping everywhere clean.
Thank you for the advice. Someone had mentioned this to me before. I don’t have a spare space, It’s a stand alone duplex. I think I will just build a self contained as security apartment and get someone to live there.

I like the engagement in this topic.
The argument for and against are very sensible and educative.
Though I sided with the green compound people cos I love ornamental flowers but I also learned from the opposing submissions.
So those saying is like good topics have finish in Nairaland that is why topic like this is coming up should re-examine themselves.

Fewer people are actually using interlocking, most are using cement and sand, then stamp it to make it looks like interlocking. No water percolates in their compounds, every single rain drop just run off and cause erosion in their areas
Re: The Ugly Trend Of Paving The Entire Compound by jahbenedict: 9:45pm On Dec 24, 2025
We all learned about the water cycle in primary school, interlocking pavements that don't have a means for water infiltration would definitely cause long term problems.

For those saying that New York and Europe is covered with pavement, they forget that the annual precipitation in these areas are lower than the annual precipitation in Nigeria (especially in the south). Some of that precipitation is in the form of snow, which melts gradually and will not have the same impact as rainfall.

In New York and Europe you will see catch basins everywhere. Even parking lots have them. These collect water and moves it into an outfall that empties into a wetland/creek/lake etc. Also it is usually mandatory that for every paved area there should be a percentage of green space to help with water infiltration.

Out of the #2B the buyer is willing to invest, why not use like #10M to scrap off concrete from any available property . Then they could bring in top soil to plant grasses, flowers, shrubs and trees during landscaping. .
Its not a big deal of a project.
The client was fussy about an established garden. It takes time and effort to cultivate one.

The client wasn't my direct as well.

Chief,

This isn't a growing trend, the insides of compounds/estates, especially in urban centers have always been covered either with cement or interlock.

Furthermore, I understand your concern, and that is technically beyond the scope of operations of an ordinary Nigerian.

But then, in my opinion, this style gives the compound a premium look.
Nothing is premium in a house with no natural vegetation.

No trees, no flowers, no lawn.

I can't live in such a barren environment.

Who would maintain the compound for me?
The ones I let out, tenants are usually not interested to take any responsibility for the compounds.
I live abroad and won’t know if they are messing things up.
Many Nigerians lack maintenance culture.
The green area in my country home is always overgrown and paying someone every quarter did not resolve it. I’ll pave everything once I go home next year.
Make e look ugly, na me get am.
Where's your house located?

If its close to me, I enjoy gardening and can be your caretaker.

A mango tree here, soursop tree there, pawpaw tree here, plantains there, banana here.... Its goes a very long way for the owner, the neighborhood and to some extent our economy.
