NLC To Nigerians: Reject ‘distorted’ Tax Law by iwaeda(op): 8:40am On Dec 25, 2025
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) on Thursday urged Nigerians to reject any tax law that “was distorted or falsified.”

President of the NLC, Joe Ajaero, in his 2025 Christmas message, stated that distortions and alleged forgery associated with certain tax policies undermine credibility and public trust.

Ajaero said, “Together, in this season and beyond, we must insist on Tax Justice where the rich pay their fair share and all forms of regressive taxation are removed.

“Any tax system that is mired in apparent distortion and outright forgery is unacceptable and should therefore be rejected by all.

“It is better to patiently craft a law that is broadly crafted and owned than rush into one filled with serious errors and outright political manipulations,” the NLC President said.

He also urged Nigerians to remain united in demanding equitable governance and reiterated its commitment to mobilising workers to resist policies that worsen economic hardship.

Reps panel to conclude investigation soon
Meanwhile, the House of Representatives ad hoc committee investigating alleged discrepancies in the gazetted Tax Reform Acts has resolved to conclude its assignment and submit its report to the House within the shortest possible time.

The committee, chaired by Muktar Aliyu Betara (Borno, APC), met for the first time on Tuesday, December 23, to deliberate on a Privilege Matter raised by a member of the house at plenary over inconsistencies between the laws passed by the National Assembly and the gazetted versions.

During the meeting, members resolved to conclude the investigation and report back to the house within the shortest time for legislative integrity, due process and public confidence in the lawmaking process.

Not helping matters how? You want them to keep shut while your useless government rapes this country front and back, is that how they'll "help matters"?

It is important for the NLC to take a stand by rejecting this policy and leading the public in peaceful protest against the proposed tax regime by the APC government.

Reject the new Tax law entirely! In a country where the government provides almost nothing for its citizens deserves no tax from the citizens.
Security . Police aren't trusted
Health care.
Electricity.
Good roads
Social amenities

Is it Somone whose Dad was kidnapped and paid 20m for ransom without the security operatives helping would want to pay the new tax?

Someone whose son died in the hospital because Nepa took light or because the General Hospitals were short staff, is it that person that would want to pay this Tax?

Or is it car owners who fix their cars regularly due to bad road that would want to pay?

Water cooperation almost doesn't exist again. We drill our boreholes and get water ourselves.

Cost of living is over the roof!

We need to ask ourselves these questions:
What are the government doing with the taxes they have been collecting?

What are they doing with the money gotten from subsidy removal?

We keep hearing Politicians looting money in Billion dollars and nothing is being done. Are these the people I will till and turn the soil for ? So that they can loot the money

We don't need any new tax law. When Nigeria works the way it should, we will gladly pay the tax without force.

Re: NLC To Nigerians: Reject ‘distorted’ Tax Law by Basicend:
If Tinubu cannot suspend that useless inhumane tax law to Nigerians, he will be impeached.

He has proven to be a hyper greedy and selfish leader. Just concerned about himself and his collective slavish cohorts.

If he can't fund his further expenditures, he should explore more borrowings.

How can citizens of a country without war become so poor. Enough is enough.

The enforcement of this tax law should have been suspended by any considerate govt until the differences are resolved. But our so called govt still want to implement this tax that is riddled with distortion. Even while it is still under investigation in the house of rep?

If The law is distorted it has to be crosschecked and put in order 1st before anything.

Very well said.

Very pertinent questions.

There is so little to show for the so much compromises the citizenry has had to put up with.

NLC should look at the law, at tell us what should happen. Because the Nigerian masses will not move an inch unless NLC moves.
Re: NLC To Nigerians: Reject ‘distorted’ Tax Law by koning: 1:04pm On Dec 25, 2025
I have lived in a country where I paid humongous taxes for over 20 years. But I receive a generous reward in form of excellent infrastructures for the taxes i pay.

So paying taxes is not the problem. It has never been the problem. Taxes have been paid since beginning of mankind.

But, in a country where a public servant uses tax payers money to acquire over N200 billion worth of properties, asking citizens to keep paying is wicked.

In China, 80% of Nigeria's public servants will be convicted to die by hanging as of 2025.

The NLC has the right and duty to protect ordinary workers and citizens.

Merry Xmas my fellow Nigerian, do not answer all this unions, they are not serious about well fare of workers, from Pegasean, Nupeng and NLC should be talking of poor payment of national workers, it is only in Nigeria that foreigners earn more than citizens, apart from their allowance, no European nation will do that to their citizens, that is why the Oyinbo says that we blacks has animalistic if we see our blacks brothers and sisters suffering we are very happy. they bring local content to bring national workers down and pay more to the white which is foreigners.

so i should reject a tax law that says, people will pay 0 income tax, if they earn less than 800k

when in the old tax law, people earning less than 800k are paying 15% as tax
