Nigerian Man Shares Funny Experience He Had With Another Nigerian On A Plane by DiamondsAreFore(op): 1:30pm On Dec 25, 2025
Yinka Ogunnubi writes:

I boarded a flight from Amsterdam to Lagos. When I got to my seat an elderly woman was sitting there. I told her politely that she was sitting on my seat. She didn't move and didn't say a word. I called on one of the crew to please ask her to move to her seat.

The crew member asked for her ticket. She said she couldn't speak English but Yoruba. Some other passengers then told her in Yoruba to bring out her boarding pass. She did and it showed it wasn't her seat. It was mine. The woman still refused to leave saying that her allocated seat was between two men and she doesn't want to be between two men.

I told the crew member that I paid for the seat for my comfort and I need to have the seat. He pleaded with me to take the seat beside her and during the flight he will look for another seat for me. For the sake of peace and given the age of the woman, I agreed.

When the flight took off, the woman was now talking to me in Yoruba, saying "shebi Omo Yoruba ni e"....suggesting that I shouldn't have insisted on claiming the seat I paid for because we share same ethnicity. I told her in Yoruba, that the only reason I did so was because of her age not ethnicity.

As luck will have it, I hit it off with the white guy sitting beside me. He was travelling to Lagos to get married to his Nigerian Fiancée. So we talked, culture shock, business and entertainment. The woman kept looking at us and at one point interjected in perfect ENGLISH something along the lines of "So, you can be this friendly and you were stressing me to leave my seat".

Imagine my shock. Not only me, the women in the adjourning seats who had joined to plead with me to let it go. I asked her now very loudly "SO YOU CAN SPEAK ENGLISH....AND YOU WERE PRETENDING THAT YOU CAN ONLY SPEAK YORUBA?" I told her in Yoruba "Mummy oni oruko till Yoruba ma'npe ewa beyen...sugbon nitoripe mo je omooluwabi, I will restrain from saying it".

Throughout the flight, she kept trying to make conversations with me, asking me where I am from, telling me what she went to do abroad. I wasn't interested. The dishonesty was too much for me to overlook.

There is something about us that permits bad behaviour. It is regardless of age or ethnicity, status of even religion. We are simply accepting of bad behaviour and willing to rationalize it for the most silly reasons.

True! Some people irrespective of tribe and age have made their bad character a right you have to accept...like they literally want to force it down your throat and in this partof the world if you want to push it, it is still we that will say ah ah..."this woman na your mama na, leave am" forgetting it is this thing that we do that shapes society!

Forget age, have you seen how humble a Nigerian is when they go for Visa interview? Have you seen us behave ourselves outside the shores of this land?

Re: Nigerian Man Shares Funny Experience He Had With Another Nigerian On A Plane by brain54(m):
Why would you try to even link this your story to ethnicity...?

Anyone from any nationality could have done this.

Most Nigerians are just too quick to criticize their own and country especially when they have small exposure outside.

I think it's a funny and interesting story. Don't discolor it with ethnicity!

"The Yoruba phrase "Won ma fi ojo ori yan omode je ni" translates to: "They will use age to exploit/take advantage of a child".
It is a statement or proverb that generally means people may use the fact that someone is young or inexperienced as a justification to treat them unfairly, bypass them, or take advantage of their lack of age/status. It highlights the potential for age-based discrimination or manipulation where seniority is prioritized over merit or fairness"

Pulling a fast one on young people is what some adults do irrespective of tribe or nationality

Forget age... Fools and Uncouth people also grow old.

What I really don't get is why Nigerians abroad will be civil and awesome, even helpful, towards foreigners, but turn nasty once they identify their fellow citizens especially if the person is not their ethnicity.

The same bad behavior towards unaself in Naija, na una go still export abroad.

Smh!

That’s why whenever I fly economy especially on international routes…I make it a point to board early… I like to secure the seat I personally checked in for and ensure I put my carry on luggage in the overhead cabin space available before it gets filled up. Sadly, experiences like this can be quite disappointing. It’s even more unfortunate when such behavior comes from an elderly person…Nigerians Shaa!!!

wonder how her husband and children would have coped with her till that age (that is if he never suffered BP and died due to her bad character).

I have noticed that some people revert to behave like mischievous children the more they age.

OP never see anything, he's saying some nonsense about Nigerian identity and all, oyibo aged women never give am unnecessary wahala before that's why.

It's just the problem with some people and what advanced age do to them.

You might think they knowingly put up such acts but if you ever get close to some of them, you'll see the mischievous child character in many things they do.

Very few age with sharp minds.

Again, only a total fool will tag this on only Nigeria.... You never see life well be that.
