Sanwo-olu Inspects Fire Scene On Lagos Island, Orders GNI Building's Demolition by treesun(op): 4:10pm On Dec 25, 2025
More than 10 buildings were affected by the fire, which began at the 25-storey Great Nigeria Insurance House, located at Balogun Market, late Wednesday.

The Lagos State governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has announced that the 25-storey Great Nigeria Insurance (GNI) building affected by fire will be demolished once the inferno is completely put out.

Sanwo-Olu said this when he visited the scene of the fire incident at Martins Street, Lagos Island, on Thursday.

According to him, a committee headed by the Commissioner for Special Duties and Intergovernmental Relations, Gbenga Oyerinde, will oversee the smooth demolition exercise in the next few days.

He confirmed that there are no casualties and all those who suffered severe injury have been taken to the hospital.

Governor Sanwo-Olu advised residents to be safety conscious during the dry season because this is not the first time the state is experiencing inferno on Lagos Island. The governor told them to stay clear of the area.

The governor said that all first responders will remain at the scene to prevent reoccurrence of the fire incident all affected traders will be supported by the government.

More than 10 buildings were affected by the fire, which began at the 25-storey Great Nigeria Insurance House, located at Balogun Market, late Wednesday.

The following day, when Channels Television visited the scene, traders at nearby buildings were seen clearing out shops.

All shops on Martins Street have been closed, all major adjoining streets have been cordoned off, and business activities around the area have also been put on hold to prevent further escalation.

While no casualties were reported, about seven people have been hospitalised due to injuries from the fire.

The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Lagos State Management Agency, Nigeria Police Force (NPF), Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Federal Fire Service, and Lagos State Traffic Management Authority are all on the ground to manage the inferno.

NIGERIA and NIGERIANS ARE MORE CONCERNED ABOUT SECURITY THAN SAFETY 👨🏼‍🚒
That's why you'll see them mount all sorts of security gadgets and personnels in their compound but the least Safety Equipment like Fire Blanket for the Kitchen they won't have,,
Some might even own Extinguishers🧯 how to use it and when to service it becomes a bigger problem!!!!

GNI is owned by Oodua Group .

Lagos State Government is part of Oodua Group of companies owned by all the 6 south west Yoruba states as part of legacies of the Sage, Pa Chief Obafemi Awolowo,GCON leadership.

It will be rebuilt into a greater edifice by the legacy owners. This is why we remind outsiders that Lagos can never be for sale. There are multiple great assets in Lagos prime locations and all over South West like that and are never for sale.

I understand the building was constructed with brick, and brick is known for being highly fire-resistant. Before any decision is made to demolish it, the structure should be evaluated by qualified structural engineers to determine its true integrity after the fire. This isn’t like many modern buildings — it was built over 50 years ago by experienced professionals — so a proper structural assessment is essential before deciding its fate.

may the people that lost their means of livelihood recover from this great loss ... its sad !

Just asking

I have nostalgic feeling about this building because my mother's stall was one of the stalls demolished to build Great Nigeria House in 1982

The company that build it is a French construction company called Bougues Limited

Took them more than 2 years for the foundation alone and you should see the number of soils and even rare minerals they found there

Once you heard the white construction guys screaming in excitement, our parents would say: won tun to RI gold niyen

Now, it would be put down ( deserve to) within a few days

Indeed, it is so easy to pull down than to build

May God console and replenish the traders who lost their source of livelihood

I am thinking along this line too. How did the committee quickly make this assessment to take the building down and why will a fire cause the building to be brought down? We need the media to look into this and let's hear what experts have to say. It does not make sense that the fire will cause a 25-storey building to be destroyed. Why is destruction and demolition our next line of action. What happened to reconstruction and repair. I don't want to believe that when they were building it, they did not think about fire. Also, there is no smoke without fire. If the building is brought down, the investigation is over. WHAT STARTED THE FIREhuh

Abroad that they like to copy, they will investigate this fire to rule out arson and someone trying to cash out from a fire.

In 2008 Lagos did the FIRST CONTROLLED DEMOLITION In West Africa where 5,900 explosives was used to bring down the Bank of Industry Building in Lagos Island.

E reach their turn, dem no put fire retardants and fire fighting equipment.

If na we go insure property for their shop, dem go tell us to put one billion fire safety equipment on our property so that their won’t be fire and for them to chop our insurance premium.

A whole insurance company not having water sprinkler system, at least. Not having wifi remote smoke detectors in their offices that can send alerts to security personnel that there’s fire?
Wifi smoke detector that only costs between N8,000 and N23,000 on Temu.

The way you always lie blatantly to drive your useless and myopic ethnic jingoist stance is mindblowing.

Theres absolutely no evidence anywhere that Oodua Investment Co owns GNI.

Absolutely none.

While it used to be a subsidiary, the company has since undergone multiple takeovers, Wema bank inclusive.
