I think the real issue is when a government comes in their first term if they don’t tackle it head on promising they will take care of it in their second term, It appears and it seems so once they have a second term term secured they move the can down the pecking order order. Pushing the responsibility of fixing the power problem to the next incoming government. This circle keeps repeating itself regime after regime. Solution Whoever wins the next elections must fix it in their first term otherwise Nigerian will vote them out. Do you think this the solution of our power problems. |

That's why we need a good leader or president that is ready to take the bull by the horns, and that leader is Peter Obi. That's is why most of the corrupt and low life politicians and their lackeys keep attacking him because they know once he gets the power, real changes start |

Power can never be fixed. Its a can that will keep getting kicked down the road. The next person will also be promising to fix it. Its a neverending cycle. |

That is true. The first thing any new President would do is to En-mass a huge war chest for their second term only to realise that after winning the elections there is not enough in the kitty to fix the problem they just do the usual by kicking the can further down for the next president to contend with. Obi might be a good candidate considering he wants to do one term. |

That was the plan by the LP government in Ekiti. |

Nigeria's power problem has always been that only a minority of people pay cost reflective tarrifs, meaning the power sector cannot make enough profits to fix the thing. Governments also aggravate the problem by forcing price controls on the power sector and then paying it a subsidy that in principle is supposed to cover the resulting losses, but in practice doesn't The result is that gencos cannot meet their financial obligations because discos owe them money, due the fact that discos cannot raise enough money because Nigerians are 'poor'. The low revenue is also why discos can't afford to replace broken down transformers and power lines too...meaning Nigerians have to do it themselves |

The next election is not even necessary as the current government would complete his 8 years. Those who are already campaigning for 2027 election should first go and learn about the difference between campaigning and electioneering |

The truth is Nigeria doesn't have the money to pay for a fully functional power sector with steady electricity. We are talking about billions of dollars here. If they do so, how will they loot? See how much the former AG looted? See how much they are saying Ngige misappropriated? Now multiply this by countless public servants across all arms of the government for decades. A report came out that since 1984, over 400 billion dollars of our common wealth has been looted. The black man is simply an embarrassment. |

I think the solution is to build more dams and invest in renewable energy. The government should also ensure the existing plants are well maintained and functional. |

KnowAll:Whether 1st term or not what is the solution? To my mind government cannot fix it without capital It needs investment Also people who invest need to make back their investment AND a profit Before now electricity has been subsidised and even that the government is owing trillions Yes trillions Recently the government took steps to deal with that but the next step will necessarily involve price hikes https://www.reuters.com/sustainability/boards-policy-regulation/nigeria-approves-26-billion-electricity-sector-debt-refinancing-plan-2025-08-14/ More pain ahead Whether Tinubu or any other president there is still a lot of bitter medicine ahead A lot I think the government action in dealing with the debt is a step in the right direction Information is hoarded so citizens don't know what is going on What is true is electricity can transform Nigeria but THAT REQUIRES CAPITAL Billions of dollars that WE DO NOT HAVE How can we persuade outsiders to bring in that kind of money? It will not happen overnight |

odejimioflagos:That is a theory It is not well informed Dams are not a solution to electricity àt all But whatever the method it is a theory The solution is the answer to the question Who will pay for it and where will the money come from Electricity generation MUST be profitable At the moment it is not profitable it is subsidised Government owes nearly $6 billion in electricity subsidy debt about 9 trillion Naira Where is that money going to come from ?what is the Federal budget? So the money can only come from the people using the electricity The same kind of price hikes that we saw with petrol will need to happen to persuade another Dangote to enter power generation Now back to the dam question Dam which river? The two major Rivers in Nigeria Benue and Niger do not originate in Nigeria That means we don't control then Any of the countries upstream can Dam those rivers or even divert them so they Don't enter Nigeria at all I suggest you research the recently completed Dam on the Nile River in Ethiopia and the impact on Egypt Apart from that even if our neighbours don't do that which is very unlikely, they will Hydroelectric power is not that much The biggest power plant in Nigeria for decades is the gas fired Thermal plant at Egbin in Lagos state. Almost double Kainji and more predictable We have the gas and rather than building pipelines to Europe we should use it at home It will still cost billi9ns and the investors needs a guarantee they will get their money back That confidence will not return until the outstanding subsidy debt is cleared and prices are increased Increased electricity prices will be very painful and politically costly for any president and his party Renewables? The only one worth talking about is solar It can help small or remote communal institutions But is not a solution for industrialisation or massive population urban areas It has to be gas and maybe coal Nuclear is interesting but maybe in the future we are not ready today |
