This exactly how people think when they are overfed. Wetin concern percolation abi speculation with compound that is cemented or interlocked, if the rain water can't go down the soil from all the open land, streets, bushes etc, it should forget it...

Lagos have bad drainage system and its also a low lying city. More reason why we shouldn't pave.
So fix the drainage which tackles the root cause instead of tackling the symptoms....At least that is what's done in sensible countries!

I planted about forty papaya trees in my compound and the people that interlocked their own compounds are always asking me for pawpaw
Were they the agric type? I have been thinking of a pawpaw farm.

How much pawpaw can you obtain from a tree?

If you have 30 trees and each one fruits 50 a year, that's 1,500 pawpaws. If you sold each at 500, that's 750,000.

I am thinking like `1,000 trees.

In sensible countries, they have a good drainage system still leaves pockets and pockets of space for greenery. Even some are developing urban forest, go figure.
London did a study recently and found out that the reason for the incessant flash floods is despite having enough drainage system was the over paving. It limits the time rain water sip into the soil, thereby creating huge flood that's could be very dangerous.
Lagos has a worst combination of bad drainage system, blocked drainage and its low lying. Still.
Nature has a way of taking care of rain water before human invaded

Talk about fact that there are hardly compounds with trees again. Someone can hardly get oranges, paw paw and other fruits from our compound unlike when we were growing up.
Let them buy from you, or plant their own.

I planted four types, one local, one short agric and two normal agric types. Most have about thirty pawpaws but one has only two.
The fruit sellers would cheat you, they are very unlikely to pay a fair price.
Bear in mind that some of the planted pawpaws will turn out to be male producing,no pawpaws. My suggestion is to plant two pawpaws very close to each other then get rid of the evidently male ones later and also prune the female ones if the two planted together turn out to be females.
I also make sure that I have young seedlings to replace any that turn out to be male.
You also need to have plans for keeping the tree upright because sometimes they produce so much fruit and the tree would fall down because of the sheer weight of the pawpaw..
I would advise people to plant at least six pawpaw trees in their compound as long as there is a fence. Some of my pawpaws were stolen through the fence.

London's drainage is piss poor for an advanced country, leave interlocking alone if it had the drainage system of Houston or Dallas it would experience less flash flooding. New York City with its lack of greenery and congested housing experience less flooding than its neighbor New Jersey because it has better drainage despite the congestion.

Thanks so much.

Sorry for my late reply.

Not true. I have same pavement in my house in Lagos and haven't seen a single grass since the last 5 years. If I need grass on it, it will only be artificial grass.

I’ve seen folks get carried away with paving because it feels low maintenance, but it ends up trapping heat and blocking natural drainage. Mixing in some green areas or permeable spots makes a huge difference. I’ve picked up ideas from random places myself, like reading about services such as professional chimney cleaning in NJ, which reminded me how small home choices can quietly affect safety, comfort, and even how a place feels long term.
