NLC: Workers Not Consulted On New Tax Laws — FG Should Suspend Implementation by SlavaUkraini(op): 3:10am On Dec 26, 2025
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has asked the federal government to suspend the implementation of recently enacted tax laws until a widespread enlightenment campaign is conducted.

In an interview with Arise Television, Benson Upah, NLC spokesperson, said while Nigerian workers are the largest tax-paying group in the country, they were not consulted in the processes that led to the passage and signing of the laws.

He added that the failure to consult organised labour in the formation of the tax laws has led to resistance, not only from workers but from Nigerians at large.

“We intend to make a push that despite the fact that we were not taken on board in the process of putting this law together, something should be done,” Upah said.

“A massive enlightenment campaign should be put in place for our members to participate, and until that is done, these laws should not be implemented

“Because the consequential effects would be quite obvious. That which we do not subscribe to will meet a form of resistance from us, but not just us; it is the Nigerians.

“We in organised labour are capable of expressing our feelings if the government speedily moves to do the needful.”

Upah said the union was deliberately ignored and refused to be carried along by the government during the deliberations of the tax laws.

“We were not consulted before these tax laws were put in place, and yet we are the biggest tax-paying community in the country,” he said.

“We did write to the government when the tax committee was being constituted, requesting for inclusion, but we were studiedly ignored, and since this became law, no one has taken the initiative to do public enlightenment for our members,” he said.

He blamed the government, saying since the laws became effective, there has been no public awareness drive to educate workers on the changes.

Upah challenged the government’s claim that individuals earning below N1 million annually are exempt, pointing out that, given the national minimum wage, virtually no formal sector worker falls below this threshold.

He said the government should urgently engage with labour groups to avoid unrest and ensure workers understand the new tax regime.

NLC should be serious for once.

They should have a concrete proposal before coming to the discussion table with the FG.

They should stop being unserious

They should make out a day for protest in January 2026.

Millions of Nigerians are ready to hit the street against the corruption coated tax law.

Tinibu has taken our calmness for granted for too long.

There would be a record hitting turn out for that protest.

The crooked tax law must not stand.
NLC for once should mobilize Nigerians against these exploitations and wickedness in government.

There is total public waste of resources amongst political office holders that must first be addressed before any thieving Tax collection is implemented.
You want to Tax people but cannot give account of how you carelessly spend the one in your disposal.

As if they are even serious about, they just want to be recognized and settled before the tax laws are enacted, else, they won't be talking about the FG making publicity to sensitize Nigerians before the law is passed.

These are laws we all know will hurt Nigeria, and they are the best to protest against it and stop it, if they are truly functioning, Nigerians should be out already now protesting before the laws go live come January.

Why should FG neglect a body as big as NLC during the tax law discussion. This shows a bit of ulterior motive.

Looks like the NLC wants the APC government to borrow more, which shows that they support the renewed hope borrowing agenda of the tinubu administration.

It is the gullible few ones among them that are the real clowns.

Nigeria is not making enough money even to execute its budget.Out of 40 trillion naira, they were only able to get around 10 trillion naira mostly because oil price was so low Nigeria couldnt reach its benchmark price and it has to borrow.

All those advanced nations collect humongous taxes.Example is Joshua taking home 48m out of his 91m boxing largesse after numerous taxes have been deducted.

What do we want if we don't want borrowing and paying tax.
Borrowing is bad but nations of the world borrow and also pay taxes.
The govt should use our taxes for our benefit not loot.

On the contrary, it would be good to tax peple now...because of the following

Most of our money comes from oil and other revenue from selling raw materials, none of it comes from our pockets.

Now, take our colonial master. They have been taxing their people for centuries, even when the UK was run by autocratic rulers who simply directed the money into their accounts. Yet their system works because the people kept on rising in revolts and protests, that finally the government started working for them

NIgerians who talk about stealing of tax monies come from the 10 million of us who actually pay tax. As the vast majority don't pay, they don't care for the most part. Now imagine if it was 150 million nigerians paying tax. Ya think that they would agree for one otondo, who even if they are from their village, steal millions upon billions and get away with it?

Foreign countries work because people pay tax, and government officials know that if they touch that money for stealing, they will be in trobule. That;s why you read in the foreign media of ordinary citizens exposing corrupt officials. Paying tax is a great anti-corruption incentive.

They should use our money stolen by our politicians
Which is a good idea, until you realize that recovering looted money is not an easy thing, that it takes a very long time, and most of it is taken off shore.

That is partly why we are left with the option of taxation or borrowing.

huh

Majority of Nigerians are not after the implementation of the tax law, but making judicious use of the money, without being embezzled and loot, is what Nigerians are after..

After all, majority of Nigerians who have travelled and lived abroad are playing tax and still doing great, becauze their tax is being used judiciously...

Can you imagine, for 2 weeks straight I've not had light in my house, I've been on generator since..

All through Christmas, my generator was on since 7am till 11pm in the night

NLC na like fire brigade wey only dey show face when mata don catch fire for public. Dem go come shout for TV, do press conference, promise heaven and earth for workers. But abeg, make we ask ourselves: after all di noise, wetin change? Common minimum wage negotiation, dem go attend meeting upon meeting, at di end, na compromise dem go compromise, and di common worker go still dey for square one. Na so dem take dey do. Dem go vanish like smoke once government throw small bone give dem or press go comot di mata from front page. Na why many of us don tire for dia "gbas-gbos" style. E be like say dem dey fight for camera, not for better life.

Now to dis tax matter. You talk another correct tin. All dis grammar about "exemption" and "summary", e dey confuse person. Government, abeg make una do one simple tin: put di full, unedited copy of dis new tax law for one public website wey every Nigerian fit access. No give us edited version. No give us summary. Just di original document. Make we see am wit our own eyes. We no need government or anybody to summarize am for us. We get sense to read and understand wetin concern our money. If dem say dem no dey hide anything, make dem prove am. Publish di law, make everybody see di real deal, word for word. Na so we fit join talk with correct information, no be from hear-say or from wetin one person interprete give us.

The truth of the matter is that, does our tax law need reform? The answer is capital "YES"

People should let the government be with this new tax law allow it to be implemented after confirming that it was the original National Assembly passed version.

Instead of our people resisting it, they should go and form genuine alliances to make sure that the tax collected are well monitored and utilized.

in all of this right up just one question.
how much has the political public office holders made good use of the resources in their disposal.
you are more like quoting the economic text books which gives us indices for a progressive economic system but refuse to talk about the operators of the system.
A good economic theory will be as good as useless if the operators are not close to human beings but beasts
