THEN;
This is just wrong, covid or no covid. No govt can become rich by taxing poverty..
https://x.com/i/status/1328047809896079361

VAT rate increase will lead to higher inflation, interest rate hike, more unemployment and generally make people poorer.
https://x.com/i/status/1108288160193306624

NOW;
SPOT THE DIFFERENCE
“Increase in VAT rate will lead to inflation” – Taiwo Oyedele (2019)

What was Proposed Then:
1. General VAT increase on almost all items
2. VAT applies on many basic consumptions
3. Businesses cannot claim tax credit for VAT paid on most of their costs

“Increase in VAT rate will not lead to inflation” – Taiwo Oyedele (2024)

What is Proposed now:
1. Specific VAT increase on a few items
2. Remove VAT on most basic consumptions (about 80% of goods and services)
3. Businesses can claim tax credit for VAT paid on all their costs

“The care of human life and happiness is the only legitimate object of good government." ( Jeffersonian Credo ).

“No nation ever grew more prosperous by taxing its citizens beyond their capacity to pay.” - former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher
MORE OF HIS PREVIOUS TWEETS ON SAME TAXATION POLICY

Re: Taiwo Oyedele Old & Present Tweets On Chronic Government Taxation Policies by Racoon(op):
Above is Mr Taiwo Oyedele advocating against the indiscriminate excessive taxation policy of government when he was not yet in the system. Today is he is shalaying the same evil

He is not only heading the Tinubu’s government neck-constricting taxation policy, but also championing policies that will further suffocate ordinary Nigerians with gusto using all manner of dubious explanations that are incongruent with modern day economic realities.

He is now defending what he criticized in 2019-20 even though the tax is now more higher, not minding if what he is supporting now is bringing additional suffering and hard times to the ordinary Nigerians just because it favours you.

It’s funny how our values, principles and moral uprightness often change suddenly once people are privileged to be in power. Now, he seems to have retrograde amnesia that no government has ever become wealthy by taxing poverty? Men of zero principles and double standards.

Re: Taiwo Oyedele Old & Present Tweets On Chronic Government Taxation Policies by Racoon(op): 12:28pm On Dec 27, 2025
"Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s political career reveals a consistent pattern of double standards, where he often opposed economic policies as an opposition figure only to adopt the same measures once in power.

-1). Tinubu opposed Obasanjo’s fuel tax as well as price hikes in the early 2000s, yet reintroduced fuel-related levies in 2023.

-2). Tinubu challenged Obasanjo’s VAT regime along with federal revenue control, but now promotes VAT harmonization together with stronger federal tax authority.

-3). Tinubu condemned Jonathan’s fuel subsidy removal in 2012 while mocking the SURE-P palliative schemes, yet removed the subsidy while rolling out cash transfers in 2023.

-4). Tinubu supported Buhari’s refusal to devalue the naira in addition to warning against VAT increases in 2021 (“let the poor breathe”), yet unified exchange rates while expanding taxation as president.

-5). Tinubu once criticized IMF/World Bank prescriptions including subsidy removal, devaluation, privatisation, as well as tax reforms. Ironically, they are now central to his administration.

-6). Even Tinubu's warnings against excessive borrowing have been reversed, given that his government has taken new loans to fund reforms.

Now, If Tinubu claims that the policies he once antagonized but now embraces will move Nigeria forward, it implies that for all these years Tinubu have been among those dragging Nigeria backward through blind or politically motivated opposition rather than principled critique...." (Modified but Credits to OP).

Mr Taiwo Oyedele will come up with another excuse now. They are always with the loud voice but immediately they have access to the front table they started doing otherwise.

I just want people to understand that Taiwo Oyedele is not more powerful than your Senators, House of Reps members. Let's learn to direct our concern to the proper place. The guy can be sacked tomorrow by Tinubu but the person who represents you are those people. They are the ones that can challenge you.

They think they will be in government forever.

They should continue rolling out all manner of anti-people taxations to generate more money they will loot in the name of project executions and contracts.

Very soon they will leave government and become ordinary citizens, by then they will understand how terrible their taxation policies of today are.

It’s hypocrisy and incompetence

This government only knows how to tax

Failed fo secure life and property

Failed to invest

Failed to attract investors

Record jobs lost and companies closing

Padded budgets

Go to their ministry in Abuja, no light talk more about the common man on the street

They even stole generators and fuel money allocated for their own ministry

It’s an incompetent kleptocracy

Nigeria politicians don't surprise me that much and if you're serious too they shouldn't too.

Just unfortunate that some will stick their heads out to defend them.

Propagandists at work! No new tax is being introduced. The new tax law is just trying to entrench taxation in Nigeria and reduce the burden on the common man! Do you guys even know that if PAYE is calculated based on the new minimum wage and old taxation policy, you will pay more?

Too many uneducated people in Nigeria.

He is right.

The new tax law does not tax poverty but the rich.

If you are poor, you will pay no tax

If you are rich you pay a fair tax.

Too many sheeps just listening to propagandists
Re: Taiwo Oyedele Old & Present Tweets On Chronic Government Taxation Policies by oyeb15: 3:01pm On Dec 27, 2025
Their mission in government is to make people poorer and die of hardship. That's what they are working towards everyday.

It's more spiritual than physical.

A perfect example of yourself.. You always seem to talk from your heart at first before the spin doctor soon get to your understanding and you changing mouth.. You have been like from the days of endsars.. I'm sure you will still change your mouth after your fellow spin doctors get to you.. Overall you still seem to have a good heart but it tends toward corruption like most blind supporters of politicians and tribal Lords in the country

Re: Taiwo Oyedele Old & Present Tweets On Chronic Government Taxation Policies by datola: 3:12pm On Dec 27, 2025
He's still not taxing poverty but untaxing poverty.

This new tax law favours the poor and those who have been paying tax before.

You are paying zero if you earn not more than N800,00pa.

Not paying VAT, CIT, Withholding tax, etc if your company is making not more than N100 million in a year.

Big company CIT reduced from 30% to 25%

VAT rate has not changed from the old 7.5%

Only people who need to worry are very high networth individuals and that makes the new tax law progressive.

And people who have not been paying before need to worry.

The main burden is just the enforcement which is now brutal.

The new tax law shall favour me, my family and business by God's grace!
