Renowned human rights activist and Convener of the Recover Nigeria Project, Comrade Osita Obi, has called for the immediate resignation of the Minister of Power, Mr. Adebayo Adelabu, over what he described as the minister’s failure to guarantee stable electricity supply to Nigerians even during the Christmas season.

In a reaction issued on Friday, Obi condemned the recurring power outages experienced across the country at a time traditionally associated with increased energy demand, family gatherings and boom in economic activities. He described the situation as unacceptable and symptomatic of deeper leadership and capacity challenges within the power sector.

According to Obi, Nigerians were “given darkness instead of light during this festive period,” arguing that the inability of the Power Ministry to ensure improved electricity supply during Yuletide celebrations reflects a lack of preparedness and vision. He insisted that the current state of affairs has further compounded the hardship already being faced by households and small businesses.

The activist maintained that in a functional and accountable system, the Minister should not wait for public pressure before stepping down from the position. He said the Power Minister ought to “resign and tender an unreserved apology to Nigerians,” stressing that leadership demands responsibility, especially when outcomes fall far below public expectations.

Obi further questioned and criticized Adelabu’s suitability for the role, asserting that the Minister lacks the capacity required to head such a critical sector of the economy. Describing the appointment as a mismatch, he said the Minister is “a square peg in a round hole,” and argued that the Power sector requires visionary leadership capable of addressing Nigeria’s long-standing electricity challenges.

He noted that electricity supply is central to economic productivity, national development and quality of life, adding that persistent outages, particularly during festive periods, undermine public confidence in government and worsen social frustration.

“In a civilised clime, he should not wait for a call for his resignation before throwing in the towel. The man has no vision and capacity to lead a ministry like power ministry. He is a square peg in a round hole,” Obi concluded.
Power has been epileptic though I travelled and currently in a band b location the light has been taken up to 4 times in a space of 6 hrs. There should be a meter to gauge the number of hrs light is supplied in a day so u can check if you are being cheated so they can be sued..why would a band A have less than 20hrs of light in a day.

But why haven't some states started building their own independent power plants to serve their states?
Several states like Lagos, abia state have started their own and it's already operational!
Bayelsa state is about to complete their independent turbine!
So why are most state governors not trying to provide electricity for the states through the construction of IPPs esp with the decentralization of electricity to states law?

LOL...we can remove the minister of power, we can even replace the minister of power with Trump or Putin, and the power supply would still be bad because MOST nigerians do not pay a cost reflective tarrif.

I keep saying this, when GSM came to Nigeria, there was no GSM backbone in the country, talkless of internet. All we had was the nitel landline system which was wack already. But because Obasanjo said that GSM companies should be allowed to charge cost reflective tarrifs, and only because of that, many GSM companies made the profit that enabled them to do good service, enjoy home internet and so forth,(Of course, the fact that you cannot use a phone unless you pay some money into it, and even if you want to only recieve calls, the line would be disconnected eventually if NO PAYMENT IS MADE).

Meanwhile power companies came around in 2013. GEJ as many people say was a kind and listening man. But to run government, you also have to be realistic. GEJ finished the privatisation of power, but also brought in price controls, and subsidy. BY 2019, a KwH Of power cost N30 Less than what it took to produce it. NOwadays for most people it costs about N100 Less than what it takes to produce it...unless you are Band A...which are 20% of consumers.

Additionally, all the bad habits we did with NEPA...we brought with disco. Bypassing meter...60% Of people bypass their meters (That is for those who shout that if we meter everyone, they will pay without ceasing! grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin). Refusing to pay, or underpaying...and even those who pay, most pay the subsidised price, and meanwhile government is strugging to pay the subsidy, because the cost of production is rising, because gas prices are not STATIC.

And what do you expect is the result...

A POWER SECTOR THAT DOES NOT AND CANNOT MAKE ENOUGH OF A PROFIT TO PAY FOR IMPROVEMENTS

Yet. tell people on nairaland this truth...they will call you APC supporter, data boy, Agbero, etc. (Apparently believing a business should make a profit is tantamount to supporting APC...no wonder many businesspeople support APC..Lol..). Or they will call you a liar. Like someone who brought newspaer report saying a disco was punished for overcharging consumers...WHAT THE EFF DO YOU EXPECT? When most consumers ARE NOT PAYING WHAT WOULD BE SUFFICENT TO MAKE A PROFIT....THINGS LIKE RIPPING OFF CONSUMERS WHO DO PAY TO AT LEAST BREAK EVEN HAPPEN.

Yes, your refusal to pay cost reflective tarrifs...is why discos are ripping off consumers. Your government's refusal...yes, TInubu's refusal to enforce cost reflective tarrifs for all, is why discos are ripping off consumers. And the fact discos cannot make a profit is why most of you STILL HAVE TO BUY YOUR OWN POLES AND TRANSFORMER, AND WIRES!

Truth is not accepted in this country, that's why we have bandits disturbing us, and UGM tormenting us, and kidnappers in the forest.
since the intruduction of band A. How much they have made to ecpends the power generation to include more and more people to the band A? Nothing on ground. The band A people bear the cost for them to grow but everything is still in stagnation. Since the introduction of band a how many megawatts of electricity is have built and improved?

Not minding the fact I love the band A and it's promise of electricity. But the government and the company are not keeping their promise on the bargain.

You can call this a blackmail because for the past 15yrs I have been in Abuja, we've never experienced this kind of poor power supply during Christmas.

1. Solving the liqudity crunch in the power sector.. start here. It has some interesting figures at page 18

2. 68% of metered electricity consumers bypass their meters

3. Band A consumers are 20% of total consumers and only them pay cost reflective tarrifs, the rest pay subsidsed tarrifs.

Moreover the message was meant for the underperforming minister of power..
MInister of Power has nothing much to do except to oversee regulation, oversee rural electrification and maybe the TCN (whose revenues are dependent largely on what the discos and gencos pay them, and the discos themselves raise funds from tarrifs...back to cost reflective tarrifs.

Has been that way since 2013. This is not the pre-2004 era where minister of power also was repsonsible for NEPA...ie generation, distribution and transmission.
